What is the number again per state

What are the numbers per state that have slots to fill.

Remember that for the USMMA, you can receive a nomination from any MOC, not just only from those which represent your state which is the case for the other SA's. Good Luck!

Wishful, that is not correct. You cannot receive a nomination from any MOC. You can receive a nomination from any MOC in your state. The DOD schools require a nom from your senator, or your specific district MOC (as well as VP and Pres).

USMMA is not a DOD Academy, and you can receive a nomination from other state’s sources if it comes down to it.
Before my DS received his nomination from our state’s sources the coach recruiting him told him he could probably help him get him one from another state if he ended up needing it.

So I understand, if a state is allowed 4 slots and another state is allowed 2 slots and the state that is allowed 2 has more than two competitive candidates, can they take a seat from the state that has 4 slots but maybe not all 4 are competitive. This process is so damn confusing who they are filling these slots and the waiting is crazy.

Just go with this....
If your DS/DD hasn’t gotten a TWE yet, they’re still in the hunt. No sense in trying to figure it all out.
It is confusing, just keep driving on until you’re told yes or no.

Just FYI, in case others look at this thread for next year, etc. and so my comments are clear, a nomination for USMMA can come from anyone in your state. The nomination cannot be from out of state. This is one of the few statutory requirements governing USMMA's admission policy.

For competitive nominations and appointments:
(b)Nominators.—Nominations for competitive appointments for the positions allocated under subsection (c) may be made as follows:
(1)
A Senator may nominate residents of the State represented by that Senator.
(2)
A Member of the House of Representatives may nominate residents of the State in which the congressional district represented by that Member is located.

This is different than the DOD schools, see above.

There is no provision that allows an out of state MOC to nominate someone who is a resident of a different state. However, what you may have received from the coach is an indication that the state allocated appointments are more of a recommended level of students, rather than a strictly construed level as is at the DOD schools. As a result, even if a state's "allotment" is "full" the school can pull from another state's "allotment". Additionally, there are also non-competitive appointments that are at the discretion of the Secretary of the Department of Transportation. With regards to nominations, --Can a coach reach out to a MOC and express a desire for a student athlete--yes. Can it help--Yes. Is it a guarantee--No. But, if someone is searching for a nomination in March for this year, the boat has probably sailed.

Can a coach reach out to Admissions in assistance of an appointment--Yes. Is it a guarantee--No. Can it help--Yes.

Moving to the allotment issue, The allotments to the states are not requirements. They are more like suggestions. Every year, the school is heavy on New York, Texas, and a couple others. Every year, there are states with no appointments. So, even if you see, on the appointment list, that your state's allotment has been extended, it does not mean that you are prevented from, or that you will not receive, an appointment.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, I wasn’t trying to be a know it all, I guess I just misunderstood the coaches offer.
Appreciate the clarification.

BoCoMoRex--no offense taken, etc., we are all just trying to help those who need it. Coaches, at all the academies, often don't really understand how the system works. "nomination, appointment, whats the difference--get me my athlete......." unless they have been there a while, --i.e. someone like Toups who understands it, the nuances are sometimes lost. Even the DOD has that issue as well unfortunately.

Coach TOOP is a 1977 academy graduate, not just a guy who has been there a long time.

And what about the case of a child that is a military dependent whose biological mother is a resident of one state, biological father a resident of another state (in which the child was born) and the child is in a third state due to step parent's orders?

Can that child get a nomination from any of those three states?

I believe there are threads on here that addresses this scenario. But, I believe the residence is his permanent legal residence, where his custody is, where his taxes are filed, drivers license is, etc.

I am not a lawyer (and don't play one on TV), but my understanding is that nomination sources are based on the legal residency of the applicant. Common law generally presumes that minors share the legal residency of their parents. If the minor's parents are living in separate states, the minor may be presumed to share residency with the parent that claims the dependent for tax purposes.

I would double check with your MoC's office for confirmation as this guidance is probably worth what you are paying for it... ;)

My son is a military dependent. He applied for a nom through the address that is our military home of record and where we vote. He flew out there for his nomination interview.
It was funny that his original DODMETS appointments were all scheduled based on that address. 3,000 miles away.

When I attended in the low tech 70s and 80s, there was a US map on Zero Deck, near the Canteen. There was a pin for every midshipman and their home town. I can't remember if it was just for those attending at the time, or back a couple of years. What I DO recall is that Long Island was nearly covered with pins, largely because the school was (and still is) little known outside of the area. When I was waiting for my appointment, I received a letter, at first, that stated while I didn't receive an initial appointment, that I was in the top five alternates for California (they gave me a number, but I forget it now) and No. 20 or so on the National list. I did receive my appointment days later.

But that wall map with the pins will always stick in my mind. . . .VERY East Coast heavy with appointments. . .

When my brother went there from 83-87, there was no Illinois flag in Delano. I'm not sure if it's the same flag, but my parents bought the Academy an Illinois flag and they had a ceremony before they hung it there. Kinda neat flashback. :)

Really. . .. hmm. Not saying that it wasn't there a few years earlier, but a few of my classmates were from IL and I don't recall them ever making a comment about that. . ..

Really. Not something I would make up. Why would I?
