What to do about NROTC spot after appointment to USNA?

I have seen some prior discussion on this point, but can't find it now. DS just accepted his spot at USNA. Is it ok to ask his plan A- school if he can maintain his acceptance there until I-Day? Also, what about his NROTC scholarship? The NROTC packet states that his scholarship goes away once he is at USNA for even a day. Do we need to do something before then, or just leave it be until then? I can see that we are able to decline, but can we hang onto it until I-Day? Thanks for any insight/input/personal experience.

Yes you can hang on to it. People do it both ways. Personal experience is that both of my Mids kept theirs until on their way to Iday (older one declined it slightly earlier), and then called their unit.

You can ask Plan A- school if they’ll bend their rules for a USNA offeree.

If they don’t, and you want to maintain an insurance policy, then just pay the deposit. If all goes well at plebe summer, then consider it the premium paid for peace of mind. (Or as another SAF poster called it: the last tuition payment you’ll make.) With the next four years covered, it shouldn’t sting too much. If things don’t go well, then you’ll be glad to have a fallback waiting.

As for the ROTC scholarship, no need to do anything. Just hold onto it and it’ll cancel itself on I-Day.

What happens to all the NROTC spots that have been accepted by those who now have accepted an appointment to USNA? This is from a mom of DS still waiting on a decision for both. ;)

The monies go back into the pool for next years scholarships, including side-load scholarships

DS wrote letters to both NROTC and the university. I mailed the letters for him the day after I-day.

This is what concerns my DS - he doesn't want to be holding a spot that could go to someone else.

Nothing happens to the scholarships that are declined.. The scholarship is yours and yours only. When you decline a scholarship it does not transfer to the next in line. You won the scholarship and you get to decide when to decline it. Congrats and good luck. The navy figures this in to their award numbers.

What happens if you are assigned an NROTC NSI that is before I-day and you get pulled off the waitlist for USNA during NSI?

That’s a good problem to have, isn’t it? Also an extremely rare one, so perhaps not worth the energy worrying about it. If it indeed happens, you’ll find a way. Just an old-timer’s way of respectfully saying, “Eyes in the boat!”

Absolutely a good problem. Not complaining in the least. Just wondering the legality of attending NSI and then reporting to I-day.... dates are intertwined.
For the record USNA is my #1 choice, foolish not to have Plan B NROTC in play.

DS did tell NROTC unit that he had been admitted and accepted USNA. He was originally assigned NSI on May 21 - so will have to do something about that. Keeping Plan B school option deposit where it is though. He did not feel comfortable talking to NROTC unit without letting them know where he stood.

Make sense. I’m am currently waitlisted for USNA. So, kind of need/want to be ready for either.

That is where we would have been. We were fully onboard with plan B - as if it was plan A, only switched when DS got actual appointment. Good luck to you no matter which one happens!
