When does the first board release who won the 4 year scholarships?
The first board is October 21st, so I'd expect recipients to start finding out anywhere from November 1st to November 21st. I emailed the PMS at VMI, and he said to expect to hear in "the latter part of November".
Soon? not a chance.
Per the PMS at VMI you quote, it seems your Nov. 1 - Nov.21 window is completely unrealistic.
Who is going to prepare the application files for the Board, and then who will compile the results, match the results to the schools, and then inform the awardees? Civilian contractors were doing most of that work.
All civilian contractors are currently furloughed until the Shut Down is over. We've already lost a week. I'm not even sure the Scholarship Board can convene 21 October without the files that would have been prepared by the civilian contractors this week and the following two weeks leading up to the scheduled meeting. I don't think most of us have any idea how critical civilian contractors have become to the back office functions of this modern, lean military. From what I've been reading, and somebody please correct me if I'm wrong, only Active Duty military are currently performing duties. Active Duty soldiers will have to make up for what the contractors were doing before Oct. 1, and were supposed to do these three weeks leading up to the Scholarship Board. I doubt that will happen.
1. I know you meant to say shutdown and not sequester. Just wanted to point that out lest the uninitiated become confused.
2. Some civilian employees are being recalled, but I doubt that applies to folks working ROTC boards.
^ right, shut down. Corrected.
Believe it or not, I was told today that the October Army ROTC board was a go. Not sure how that will happen, but that is what I was told.
Some of us are back at work after a short vacation, so the wheels are still turning, just a little slower than usual.
Nice, hope it truly happens!
I know this sounds convoluted but personally for my son, it wouldn't be such a bad thing if decisions were on hold for just a bit-until after EA decisions are out. It would make college choice easier!!
Awesome! Leggo October board!
Vista jinxed it...disregard my last. Board is being pushed back.
If I understand correctly, most college early decisions come out just before Christmas. Are you hoping for a nearly two month delay on the first board notifications? I guess I am wondering how a delay would be helpful?
I knew that somehow it was too good to be true that the board would be held on time!
Just call me Schleprock...
So lets say results from ROTC board come out November 1st. Your son/daughter, hypothetically gets a 3yr scholarship to their 1st and 4th college choice and they have one month to make their decision. So they need to decide by December 1st. However, EA decisions don't come out until January 1st. If you knew what college you got into it can help them make the decision. It obviously reduces the chances of excepting a scholarship to a school that you don't get into.
I can't imagine how it would be possible with four years scholarships but I would like to see them decided by the school battalion itself after the candidate is admitted. To me that just makes more sense (though I am sure there are important intracacies that I am missing that precludes this)
But we won't know if we get a scholarship in November. We probably won't know until January... Or later
Yes true, but if you knew what college you were excepted to first you can either choose that school first in your college rankings if the board hasn't met or if the board has met but you haven't turned in your final acceptance you can accept the scholarship to the school you get into.
No one "wins" a scholarship by some good luck....it is earned with a lot of hard work.
I can feel nothing but honored to have my child to have received the scholarship.
As you, and all of the other proud parents of our amazing young men and women, should.
But why take offense at a casual turn-of-phrase?
agreed Inquiring Parent!
No one "wins" a race by some good luck....it is earned with a lot of hard work.
No one "wins" a tournament by some good luck....it is earned with a lot of hard work.
No one "wins" a Nobel Prize by some good luck....it is earned with a lot of hard work.
No one "wins" a football game by some good luck....it is earned with a lot of hard work.
I guess you're right Vista.
I'd really just rather know where I got the scholarship, because I can't afford my #1 choice without it.... So if I get accepted to VMI in December, I'll still be anxious to know if I can afford it and actually go there. I guess it varies by situation!
