Who Is Still Waiting?

oh ok. do you choose which school?
I did not get to choose between Marion Military Institute and New Mexico Military Institute. My friend who applied to USMMA, received a prep slot last year to NMMI. He had very strong academics but was weak in athletics and extracurriculars. I am the opposite where my athletics and extracurriculars were very strong as well as my ACT, but my GPA was on the weaker side. I was offered a sponsored prep slot at Marion Military Institute. My guess is if you need more help academically, they send you to Marion. If you need more athletics, they send you to New Mexico. That's just what I think based on my experiences. Don't take my word for it as I have no idea how true that is though.

My DS is sponsored prep for USMMA and was sent to NMMI. He did not have a choice. He is a recruited athlete. There are several recruited athletes and several nonathletes in the sponsored prep group at NMMI this year.

Looking at the trends from prior 4 years, there has historically been a decent number of appointments to go out between now and 1 May. These figures would typically include those in USMMA sponsored Prep School programs as well as self-prep. I was told they considered the class "full" on 13 MAY 2020 by a USMMA admissions rep, but a few additional slots surfaced and the latest SAF reported appointment in the prior cycle was 29 May.

What does this mean? Nothing really - past events are not necessarily indicative of future events. However one may opt to make several logical inferences.

1) There are still appointments to hand out
2) At some point within the next 45 days, expect admissions to send out non-selection letters. Some who receive this letter will feel the whiplash effect and actually be offered a slot as things shape up and other declinations come in.
3) If you have not received certainly on your status by 15 May, chances are significantly reduced but not zero.
4) USMMA has a target number of students for the class of 2025 and they will offer appointments up to the July 9th report date.

Strictly looking at the trend chart from today through the end of the Admissions Cycle for this calendar year, you can see there are decent numbers left to go. Even if the class of 2025 continues to track with the class of 2022, there are more than 10 additional appointments we could expect to be reported here. The other classes saw more than 20 appointments reported relative to their 1 April starting point.

Best of luck to all still on hold!

Your seem knowledgeable...much appreciated information here. Can you tell me, do you know how the SA's work for the few candidates, who are offered a place on a waitlist for another SA, (which you have to accept within a week), and also have to accept the SA which you were accepted to, by May 1st? What is the advice on this? Chances are ? (or very slim) for waitlisters b/c it depends on acceptance yield after May 1st but then tough to give up spot for #1 SA? Can they accept both waitlist and May 1st deadline?

A candidates status at Service Academy A is unrelated and unimpacted by their status at Service Academy B. The schools do not communicate with one another about their applicant pool to try and offer a life raft to as many students as possible. Should an applicant receive an offer of appointment prior to the 1 May deadline, they should accept it in my opinion provided they still think this is the best option on the table. If an additional offer of appointment were to come at a later date, there is new information to consider and a new decision would need to be made at that time. It is quite normal for an appointee to receive multiple offers that include Service Academies as well as traditional higher learning institutions. Every applicant has a mental rank order for these schools and should a better offer come along, it is very normal to change direction. In the case of a Service Academy, if a student were to decline (or accept and then decline at a later date), there is no going back. Once you have declined the seat you are out of the game.

Some SAF members have asked the hypothetical - "I have an appointment to Service Academy A, but I really want Service Academy B. Would it help if I called admissions at Service Academy B and told them that I have other offers? Would they then offer me an appointment because Service Academy A offered me one?

The answer is no - their criteria for admission is different than the other schools.

Understand. But this situation is complicated by this waitlist status. It is not an acceptance yet, but if you accept to stay on the waitlist, you leave open the possibility that you may get accepted after May 1st through possibly even later June. Which complicates accepting another service academy which you are accepted to. One SA is a sure thing, just not the 1st choice, the other is a not so sure thing, but it is the 1st choice. Just want to know if a candidate can accept both the waitlist for SA A, and accept offer from SA B in the very unlikely chance that SA A would later accept. I have heard this has happened---even up to I-Day.

I see it differently. Agreeing to remain on the waitlist is simply that - Are you still interested even if we call you later and offer you an appointment? YES PLEASE...

It would make sense that the SA would like to remove people who have moved onto other opportunities from the list and only focus on those who wish to remain in the hunt.

You have the ability to decline all the way up until you arrive for Incoc/BCT. There are no legal or financial ramifications for changing your mind prior to arrival.

It's Decision Day! Congrats to those who have already made a decision, and best of luck to those still on the fence. May 1st marks the transition into the final lap (so to speak) for Service Academy Admissions. We hope to clear the deck from those sitting on multiple appointments as they declare their allegiance to a single school and the respective Admissions teams gain clarity on where they sit for number of students committed to their next class of students.

From this point, the schools will seek to fill the few remaining seats they have in the class. To do this, they work down the waitlist. In preparation for this phase of the process, they have sent TWE letters to many. In some cases, applicants who received a rejection letter will have their fortunes reversed and get "the call." We are already seeing this in recent SAF posts, and it happens every year.

For those still on HOLD, or a waitlist for another school - recognize where we are in the admissions cycle. Understand that there is still a chance you could get picked up this cycle, but that chance is currently slim and diminishing by the day as Admissions gets closer and closer to filling the class. Own it, be real with yourself, and understand the reality of a limited number of seats on the bus with a significant number of qualified applicants seeking to join the ranks of Service Academy alumni.

From me to you - best of luck. I know what it feels like to open rejection letters from each of the 5 Service Academies and believe that all hope is lost and that all you had worked on up to this point was wasted. Just remember - it only takes one YES. That can come this year, or you can try again next year. If you really want it - don't give up on the dream because only you can take it away from yourself. Everyone loves the underdog story and we are rooting for you!

Updated the appointment post but posting here as well.

DS was notified of his appointment this evening. He was put on Hold back on March 25th. He’s now undecided because he has a 4 year AROTC scholarship.
Congratulations! My son was in the exact same situation last year. He was a plebe this year (just turned mid/n as recognition was last wkend)- also had an ROTC scholarship and is also from PA. Last year- my DS spoke with a plebe he knew from high school that was at the academy and that solidified his decision. If your DS would be interested in speaking with a plebe/mid, I would be happy to try and connect them. If interested send me a pm.

Yes!! That would be wonderful if we could connect the two of them to speak. I appreciate the offer.

If you are NOT accepted do they tell you? My son's portal has reverted to a new application for class of 2026 but he was never given a rejection for 2025.

Great to see lots of offers coming out. From my count, out of the 22 who have posted that they are still waiting, there have been 7 appointments, 2 sponsored prep appointments, and 1 waiver denial. Hang on for those still waiting. More to come.

@Bosley22 - yes, appointees are generally receiving phone calls at this point - either by Admissions or their nominating authority. As the days get closer to the July report date, there is less time to deal with FedEx, USPS, or a candidate checking their portal for notification. Admissions teams want to know if you are going to accept and they will generally call for the fastest response. Some have already committed to other options and can deliver a quick "no" and admissions will move down the list to the next qualified applicant. Some will need 24 hours to decide and that is generally ok too.

As for why the portal cut over, on May 1st the next admissions cycle began and their portal is not set up to handle the current class and the future class so everyone sees the same thing. Admittedly, they could do a much better job alerting those still on hold about what is happening to their website based on the calendar, but alas they do not. As we have seen with the last several days, the pace has picked up for USMMA Admissions and several here at SAF were notified of appointments AFTER the website changed over. They are not done yet with offering appointments, but it does look like they are getting closer to their appointment targets based on the pace of announcements here by forum members in context to where they have been in recent admissions cycles at the same point of the calendar.

I believe I heard on last night’s parents call that admissions is saying they have around 200 accepted offers. So, room for about 50 more. I’m not sure how many offers they are waiting to hear back from vs offers they are still needing to make.
