Wow Bad Day in Annapolis

Doesn't sound like any threat to Plebe Families. That said 5 dead at the newspaper office, and roads closed around town.

Sadly, I am getting so used to this kind of news that my first thought was a long day made longer for Plebe Parents.

Edit: BTW my best to all the great families who put their DDs/DSs in a position to earn a spot in USNA Class of 2022!

The next six weeks are a little tough on moms and dads. That said, I look back on DDs PS2016 kinda fondly. Pride, worry, waiting for her letters, care packages, writing letters to her. It's a unique time. So great to have a college actually invested in the growth of your kid!

Sucks to be them right now, but Like the USNA Grads say here all the time. PS is down to a science. The DDs/DSs who are tormenting your kids are (according to my own DD) eager to give back to the USNA by helping to deliver to Cl2022 the same awesome growth experience that every USNA seems to value so greatly.

Knew something was amiss when, during the superintendent’s briefing for parents, a junior officer stepped on stage twice to whisper in the supe’s ear at length. As the briefing ended, the supe announced that a shooting had taken place near the mall. Said no word on casualties but that all on the Yard were very safe. He mentioned it again at the swearing-in ceremony, this time with mention of deaths. Sad to see now that there were at least five dead.
 
When I first saw the headline "Shooting in Annapolis" I feared the worse for the new midshipman. I was relieved it didn't involve them, but in any case it's a tragedy.
 
Pretty sad day. It hits home on the yard because this is the local paper that covers USNA. Many of these reporters have spent countless hours, days and years covering the good and bad of USNA. I know as a former athlete, the reporters that covered us at USNA were well known. We could find them at practice, sidelines of the game, after the game and sometimes even traveling with us. We knew them well and they knew us well. When we can back to visit with our spouses and kids they have us hugs and asked about us. USNA is one of those rare schools where the Sport Info Directors don’t spend hours prepping athletes for interviews or hiding a player some days. They say to be ourselves and make the uniform proud! Terrible day in these regards while just a few miles away such an amazing day was occurring.

Received this from my USNA Parents Club:

"Sad to report that one of the victims in today’s shooting in Annapolis[at the Capital Gazette) was a previous midshipmen’s mother and sponsor mom for the Maryland parents club. Please pray for them all."

It feels worse now, a link born of common experience. A Sponsor Mom ! The ones who drive our kids to the airport, the ones who offer keys to thier homes so a Plebe can remember what it feels like to put their feet up, or pet a family Dog. Most of them Year after Year after Year.

I found her: Wedni Winters -------- We are less for her loss. If you feel like it take a moment to read about her (best way to honor her is to take the time to learn about her IMHO)

Yeah, her daughter is one of my classmates. Terrible to hear.
