Come to think of it, I MAY have gone to a USNA v. USAFA game a year or two ago (when it was in Annapolis). I don't remember which team it was, but the QB had a tantrum that, basically lost the game for the team (I THINK it was the USNA QB).
I can also tell you, it isn't entirely obvious what the 3rd verse is... just looks like a bunch of people in the corner of a field celebrating (USAFA won the game I was at). It certainly isn't regarded the the NCAA watching public as the two-century old AF tradition that must be honored by those commies at civilian schools (oh, also, academies are less conservative, and civilian schools are less liberal than we all want to admit). They see it as a song... at an interesting time of the game. And frankly, when i was there, I didn't really see it as anything else either, although people did slow down to notice something was happening.
If you think academies engage in "clean play" on the "field of battle" just before their schools have core values they memorize, you are SORELY mistaken. I don't think there is a single football player out there that doesn't want a tough game, that pushes the boundaries and acceptable play.
The "Coast Guard Commandant Cup" hockey tournaments I've played in take teams from across the Coast Guard, and pit them against each other for two days on the Cape in Mass. Seamen all the way up to a rear admiral duke it out. These games are rough, played by men (and some women) who don't like to lose.
Heck, police teams are some of the dirties teams you'll see play.
But here you think the poor Air Force Academy cadets were cheated and abused by a bunch of mean commie hippies (from a state hasn't legalized MJ... mind you).
I understand feeling defensive about the teams you watch. I also know that you feel less defensive if you're the one playing. I don't think coaches really care about the bands or cheerleaders.
It's a game. One team won, one team loss. Maybe it was a dirty game, but having played in a number of dirty games... they can be fun too.
Me recommendation? Get off the high patriotic horse and realize this is a game and not everyone understands the traditions of service academies....
