Your Son/Daughter is Going Where?? Round 2

A conversation I had with an acquaintance of mine a few months ago....

Acquaintance: "Has your daughter decided where she's going to college?"

Me: "My DD is going to the United States Merchant Marine Academy. She's going to play basketball for them."

Acquaintance: "I didn't know the Marines had an Academy. She's going to play basketball for them? I thought she wanted to be a lawyer."

Me: "USMMA is one of the five Federal Service Academies and is in New York. Once she's done there she can commission into any of the Armed Services, not just the Marine Corps or the Navy."

Acquaintance: "Oh, she's headed to New York? I've seen pictures of West Point. She'll do great in the USMA. Good luck to her in the Army."

I just smiled, sighed, and nodded my head.... ☺️
I imagine USMMA must be the most difficult SA to explain to the uninitiated! The optionality of their future service opportunities is awesome. Congratulations on your daughter's appointment!

From my own experience on the wrong side of this question: I am from a very small town and while in high school I was in a group where seniors were talking about their plans post graduation.

Me: Hey what are your plans after graduation?
Air Force grad: I am going to the Air Force Academy in Colorado.
Me: That sounds cool but is that a hard place to get into?
Air Force grad: Blink...Blink Uh Yeah!

He then proceeded to go into the steps required to get in and a friendly reminder that he is valedictorian.

Thus started my introduction to the service academies.

A snippet from a speech from General MacArthur to the Corp of Cadets.

General MacArthur: As I was leaving the hotel this morning, a doorman asked me, "where are you bound for General." And when I replied West Point, he remarked: "Beautiful place. Have you ever been there before"

No need to say anything. It's just nice to know that all the Ensigns and 2nd Lieutenants from the other academies will be making table scraps compared to what 3rd Mates and 3rd Engineers make in the Merchant Marine.
