AROTC 2nd Board Waiters 2015

So excited for my son today. We just found out that he has been awarded the 4 year AROTC scholarship. I am a retired army 1SG. Being a soldier is a great thing. He was a board winner from 2nd board. He was boarded on the 1st board but was not a "winner." He did not dwell on the fact he was not selected on the first board and just went about his normal rotuine of school, sports and community involvement. He now has 4 year AROTC offers to Western Kentucky University, East Tennessee State University and Austin Peay State University. All his top choices. He also has already applied and been accepted at all 3 school. Now he has to make a decision. We plan to visit each school, take a tour and speak with the ROTC programs. Then make the decision. Each of these schools also help with room & aboard. All are great schools. We will eagerly await the "official" offer in the mail. So congrats to all the individuals whom were selected today,. You should be thankful and proud. To others whom are boarded, just hang in there. Good luck to all you future soldiers.

Congratulations to your son and thank you for your service as well.

Your son sounds like he has all his ducks in a row, great job.

I remember this time with both my sons, each time they had a pile of information on the dining room table from each school, both had 5 schools to choose from (They offered more schools in the past) Those piles took up the whole table for nearly the entire 30 days until they finally made their decisions. We didn't mind, felt really proud every time we walked by that messy table.

If you guys don't mind me asking, what did four year winners have for ACT/SAT? I'm just curious to see
SAT:
Math: 710
Reading: 660
ACT:
Composite: 29
(sorry I cant remember the individual category scores)

There is, if you look in the file upload section an option is "Letter of Recommendation"

Interesting, though if you look at how the points are totaled for the applicants, there is no section for LOR's

Don't try and come to any conclusions based on other's SAT/ACT scores. These scores are only one part of the overall application and only account for about 200 out of 1400 points. Just because an applicant has high test scores doesn't mean they are a shoe in for a scholarship. My son received a First Board 4 year Scholarship to 5 schools, his ACT score was 24. There is a lot more then the test scores that goes into the decision.

4 year scholarship to...
FSU-accepted
UCF-pending
VMI-accepted
Did it with 26 ACT, ranking 16% and a 3.87 cumnlative GPA

Also, how does this scholarship work? It is all tuition-paid at certain schools versus others?

Different schools do it differently. Look it up for each of your schools. I know mine is going to pay my entire tuition. Sometimes it's tuition, sometimes room and board, rarely both. But, it is full tuition or full room and board

Congratulations.

The scholarship is for the entire tuition at any school.

There is the option to take the scholarship for Room and Board instead of Tuition if you want, but that's a whole other discussion.

Austin peay has a great ROTC program. If you're going for a quality program out of the list choose there!

I still can't wrap my head around the fact I was pretty much just handed a 150k dollar check and the career path I have always wanted.

The formal letter will come soon, in it you will find your official contract and other info. You have 30 days to sign and return the contract. Read it carefully, this is not a scholarship as much as a forgivable loan. There is No, repeat No disadvantage to signing the contract as soon as you receive it and sending it back. It will not change your chances with any SA or other ROTC program, they do not talk to one another. By sending your contract in quickly you will be put in the DoDMERB line ASAP. Getting your DoDMERB out of the way as soon as possible is important so that you can address any possible remedials and or DQ's. Also in your formal letter you should find a link to youtube on the proper PU and SU form, you will want to view it ofter and practice your form. Best of luck to you all.

Great advice here -- make sure you and your parents read the paperwork carefully.

Congratulations.

Now the Reality.

What you've actually been given is a Government Backed Student Loan. This Loan has various options for re-payment.

1. Payback of loan if you drop the program or are disenrolled after your sophomore year.
2. Possible Enlistment as payback if you drop or are disenrolled after your sophomore year.
3. 8 years Reserve or National Guard Service
4. 4 years Active and 4 years IRR (Competitive and not a guarantee.)
5. Once you commission you have to complete your service obligation or you could still end up having to repay the scholarship.

There are several ways a cadet can be disenrolled from ROTC, you'll learn those as you go.

As far as the Career Path, unless your in the top 10% of the Active Duty OML the Army will choose that career path for you. You make a wish list but it is ultimately up to the Army.

Meet all the requirements of your contract and you will commission, you will find even in your new battalion that not everyone will make it through.

I don't mean to rain on anyone's parade, but keep this in the back of your mind, don't dwell on it but be aware. The hard work is just beginning.

Now with that being said.....It is pretty awesome isn't it.

How would you suggest I put myself in a position for success in ROTC? I assume do every lab, volunteer, and all that jazz?

Everything but the Jazz.

Plus;
Keep your GPA high
Have a great APFT Score
Don't get any MIP or MIC's
Stay out of trouble
Study for the standardized testing

These are things that you can do that are under your control, so do them well.

When we get to our battalions what should we do to be standouts? Of course have great physical fitness, but as for leadership? I'm guessing the first year is just learning the basics.

Anyone know how long Texas a&m takes for acceptance?

There will be opportunities to volunteer for who knows what. Take advantage. Make sure you've got your uniform and appearance nailed down. Work on your command presence. Remember your part of a team, so help your team mates. I don't know about AROTC, but in NROTC you step into leadership roles the second semester of your freshman year. If you want to be in the first batch to get that opportunity, have your act together the first semester. Follow when appropriate. When necessary take charge. Oh, yeah... get a great GPA. You'll find ways to stand out.

One of my high school students received his acceptance this week. He applied late fall.

I'm a 4 year winner to LSU, Spring hill and the university of north Georgia...my act score was a 24. I know...pretty low, but my extra curriculars and athletics were jam packed!

Year 1 isn't about being a leader. You'll have 4 years to be molded into a leader. I first suggest not worrying about being a "standout." If you do well in the areas you are supposed to, you will standout. If you worry about being a standout all the time, you probably won't be one. Show up, day 1, in shape, focused, and ready to do work. Everything else will come. But I think in the context you are hinting at, PT will be the first thing that will set you apart from your peers. Your goal for minimums should be the maximums. Good form will be expected, and a number of your peers will fail their first APFT because of this.

Grades. Grades. Grades.
Physical fitness.
Good attitude.
Willingness to learn, eagerness to listen.

Notice grades is there 3 times. Grades will eliminate some of your classmates. Grades will be the single greatest factor in determining your future.

I started my MS1 year with 22 four year scholarship cadets, almost five years later only about 65% of us made it to become LT's.

Relax, enjoy what's left of high school, and get in shape. This is a marathon, not a sprint. If the scholarship process wore you out, stressed you out, or crushed your nerves, just wait. Getting invited in the door was the easiest part, now you must earn a seat at the table.
