President Trump, Commander in Chief. Thoughts?

Milly, my DD Yuk could not be happier with the election. A president elect who has a stated commitment to invest in the military. Many would say that our young men and women in uniform have been let down with a lack of investment in important equipment, personnel etc over several years. I am of the opinion that when our men and women in uniform are let down, we as a nation are let down. Just my opinion. I am hopeful not worried about our future.

You and your popcorn!

I've got an open spot next to me LTS! Do you want butter, salt, a sprinkle of sugar or how about a pinch of cayenne pepper mixed in your bowl? Its starting off pretty good now!

Our nation was tested and failed.

I couldn’t disagree more with that statement. America didn’t fail. I think Americans won this election. Our government was founded on the ideal, "of the people, by the people, and for the people." We voted and this was the result. I’m proud that we didn't roll over and hand the keys to the kingdom to the corrupt political elite and its propaganda media that have tried to force feed us our leaders. Politicians work for US! Hopefully, they will remember that next time. God bless America!

... Politicians work for US! Hopefully, they will remember that next time. ..

Reminds me of the sign posted above the bar at my favorite dive: "Free beer tomorrow"

Milly: tell your DD not to worry too much about what was said during the campaign. When was the last time a politician fulfilled his campaign promises?

the interesting part of this is if had gone the other way this conversation would still be taking place.
in politics everyone does not get a trophy.

So very true! I think the OP doesn't quite understand how the real work of the military is done and how little impact the President has on the day-to-day of those in uniform. Our military is made up of a cross-section of the population and therefore, the political make-up reflects that. Granted, overall, the members (especially officers) are more fiscally conservative, but there's a good cross section of all and that's probably what is reflected on the FB posts you've seen. However, I would be shocked if any active-duty officer posted anything remotely like these comments on public media. All may not be happy with the results, but they got up Wednesday morning, put on their uniform, and went to work...because that's what they do.

Frankly, as my work is very closely aligned with DoD, I and my counter-parts are excited about these next few years. Today, President-Elect Trump's team met with Pentagon leadership to start working the transition. Remember, that active-duty leadership doesn't change at the will of the President. The Congressional Armed Services staffers for the most part will remain in place. Most of the folks who have been working this process for the past 4/8 years will remain in some role for the next 4/8. Yes, with both House & Senate in the majority, we are hopeful that Trump's promises of a more robust military moving forward will make some headway, but even if everyone agrees...we are talking YEARS for any of that to happen. However, the military has been working under a crippled budget for so long under sequestration that ANY movement is a positive.

I would also suggest to the OP that she step back from the limited media snippets she's reading and look at the OVERALL workings of the military and how the checks and balances of that actually work. Frankly, for every negative she can post of what P-E Trump may have said, I can find another of something else he said to counter that. It's all context and in the end has very little to do with what will actually happen. As a civilian woman in this world, both as a dependent and now as a VP of an organization fully engaged from the Pentagon to the Hill to one of the largest bases in the country, I can tell you I've seen most of what women go through in the military and have since the 60s. I received an appointment to the USAFA for their second class of women but turned it down because I "was afraid." Something I have deeply regretted my entire life and one reason I'm so excited to see young women now walking so much easier down paths those ladies who weren't afraid made possible.

It's now my DS looking at the possibility of an Academy. I would have been just as proud and excited for him regardless of who went into the White House. When it's all said and done, it's MUCH bigger than that.

I do appreciate all of these responses. I'm grateful that many of you say your children are pleased with the outcome of the election because it means that Navy and our nation will benefit from your children's service. Please keep in mind, however, that Trump has displayed over and over willful ignorance about what actually is IN our constitution. There is little guarantee that he will be constrained by accepted norms. My child will not commit to a commander in chief who swears HIS military will torture, for example.

I DO understand that the nature of political campaigns is to say lots of stuff, only some of which will ever see the light of day. But doing his own thing, without regard for the law, advice of experts, actual evidence or data, social expectations, or unintended consequences has been Trump's behavior for his entire adult life. Why does anyone expect that he will change now? It's not enough to think....well, he will give the military more money! This is the guy who said that Senator John McCain was not a war hero because HE likes heroes who do NOT get captured. Anyone who is willing to serve under a man like that - I don't understand it yet I remain grateful.

When they stand and say "I Do" it is not to the person in the White House it is to the Constitution of the United States.

We are seriously leaning. HER choice and and her decision on how to make public. Is this a trick question? lol. Remember our kids are supposed to run this show.

As John Travolta once said "I Am so Confused". I didn't see anyone saying their children or anyone else were delighted with the results. Enough is enough. Moderators please shut this down. Politics is not the venue for these discussions.

It's not a trick question, I am genuinely curious. You stated that she "will not commit to a president....". Granted, those are your words and not hers. However, considering how vehemently you oppose our president elect, and how "your child" cannot see herself serving with him as Commander in Chief, I can't imagine she would be happy serving in the military for the next 10 years or so.

OK Milly, so on Tuesday morning your DD wanted to join the military, but as of Wednesday morning she did not. That’s great. Then please step aside and clear space for discussion amongst those young people who still wish to commit to the military.

Why are you not digesting what people on this thread are telling you? If you wish to discuss politics on the internet, there are endless outlets available to you for that purpose.

My "trick question" comment referred to the issue of: who is in charge of my daughter's Navy application and thus, who is in charge of making important decisions and communicating those decisions. I'm just the mom. I was making reference to a different thread on THAT issue, which surprisingly, generated more drama than this thread.

I get that this subject is barely balancing on that fine line between what is permitted and what is not permitted on this forum. I appreciate that is has gone this far. This is TRULY a unique situation in US history and I appreciate that the moderators have let this continue because if folks who have concerns cannot connect with others in the same position, there is a good likelihood that many will just walk away. This forum serves a purpose - information and support - and if you choose to NOT support folks who are struggling right now with this particular issue, you may be losing young people whose service to this nation would be very valuable.

Please note that this has been, to this point at least, a conversation, meaning that others are engaged as well. I felt when I started this thread and i continue to feel that it is useful for us to share our questions, concerns, and thoughts with each other. If my daughter really makes the difficult choice to look to other options for her future, am I really no longer welcome here and if so, how quickly do I become persona non grata?

I served for over 20 years in the U.S. Navy under 3 presidents, both Republican and Democrat. Did I agree with the all of their policies? No, of course not. But I never wavered in my support for our Commander-in-Chief. If your child "will not commit to a commander in chief..." then the military is not for them. I've served with sailors from all over the U.S. of different races, religions, and political ideologies and not once did I think they would not support our president. I think your child should think long and hard about this decision. If they cannot/will not support every legal order they are given, the academy is not for them.
