Hello I am a junior that just ended first semester and I was hoping if someone that is well informed about the admission process in the USAFA could help me weigh myself in terms of if I can get into USAFA or not. (also the USMA and USNA)
First off
Cumulative GPA; 3.97
SAT; CR: 620, Math: 630, Writing: 720
I'm looking to retake the SAT to get a higher score.
Extracurricular Activities-
Sports:
-Freshman year I did JV Golf JV Swimming
-Sophomore year I did JV Golf
-Junior year I'm looking to do track and I will likely make varsity and receive a varsity letter in one or more events. And I will continue with track and cross country in the future from now.
My Parents have pushed me to rather just play violin and study (like the average Korean parents that try sheltering me from other things) so I have been unable to participate in Sports to my full potential. But I have now convinced my parents to allow me to partake in sports which I have always wanted to. However, I am in good physical condition so I will pass the CFA without a problem. Can do 100 crunches under 2 minutes, and around 60 push ups under 2 minutes, so I am not in bad shape considering my little participation in rigorous sports. (I work out any possible time I can at 24 Hr Fitness or just at home, etc..)
Course:
Freshman year took all possible courses, (6 classes) GPA was 3.95
I've taken the hardest possible classes which in sophomore year my school offers 2 honors classes: Honors English and Honors World History. GPA: 4.0
Junior Year I'm taking all IB Classes, so I currently have 6 IB classes. But I'm also taking Symphony Orchestra and Chamber Orchestra which is considered as two separate classes so I am taking 8 full classes throughout the Junior year. First semester I got an A- in Math and Chemistry which brought my GPA down a bit but 2nd semester I'll be sure to receive a 4.0.
Extracurricular Activities:
Orchestra/ Violin
-Went and performed with ALL-NW Orchestra which is a very competitive. orchestra
-I also went to All-State Orchestra which is also competitive
-At regional Solo and Ensemble for violin I won 1st place
-Past 4 Years I have received the top, superior rating award for violin solo.
-I am club president for Chess Club, Ping Pong Club, and FBLA Club.
-I am Secretary Treasurer for the Junior class of 2015 Student Government (I couldn't run for President because I am taking orchestra which disallows me to take leadership, which is essential to run for President of Vice- President)
- DECA. 1st Place at DECA Regionals for Business Finance this Junior Year. And I am running to be an officer in DECA.
-Qualified for State in FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America). Am looking to place for Nationals at FBLA because it is quite tangible judging by my and my partner's performance.
-I am and have been for 2 years in Teen Council, which is a planned parenthood organization which prioritizes leadership and support. We are a group of 18 Teens around the county who go around high schools and middle schools giving presentations about anti-bullying, Sex-Ed, etc. We meet every Wednesday for 2.5 hours.
- I have volunteered at Capital Medical Center for 2 years as a volunteer or greeter in the ER. I resupply materials, clean beds, help patients. I sometimes work at the front desk where I guide and greet patients and people looking for family in hospital rooms.
-I placed 1st at my schools Talent Show, where I sang for my talent while my friend played piano accompaniment.
-Received Award for helping and supporting at a local food bank my sophomore year.
- Have received 5 Academic All American Awards for the past 5 semesters of my high school career.
- Chamber Orchestra, which is recently considered a class because we often go to competitions, festivals, and concerts.
- I am a member of the National Honor Society.
In perspective I hope to do Boys State, since I am not affiliated with something like boy's scout which allows people to earn an eagle scout. My counselor and career cruising teacher is very eager to send me to Boy's State.
So an additional question I have is, does my minimal participation in sports really hurt my chances of getting into USAFA? Does not being a team captain of some sort in a sport kill my chances, or how much does it hurt my chances if at all?
What other things can I do to really make myself an outstanding candidate?
Thank You for reading all of this. Please be brutally honest as I am willing to change whatever I have to to be able to be an optimal candidate for the USAFA, USMA, or USNA! I am applying for all 3 academies.
