Lieutenant Colonel Scheller in the Brig

I’m not a fan of people entering the military for political and résumé purposes. I’d like to talk about his art.

I'm going assume the art comment is a joke. The Majority of men and women enter the military for resume purposes, I'm a big fan of those people....but I'm sure there are a few that just like the idea of being able to kill people. I'm personally not a fan of those people

I joined to see the world. Back then it was not just a job but an adventure. That was a navy recruiting slogan. I entered the healing arts. They say kill, I say heal.

They do?

So you think the majority that serve in the military do so to pad their resume but you don’t like killers , who are apart of organizations , their main purpose being killing.

Part of a stand up routine? Or actually meant to be insulting to those who have served?

"The Majority of men and women enter the military for resume purposes"

I suppose if you're looking for a trigger to start an argument, or other activities that eventually will lead to a thread being closed, this type of statement might do it.

Then again, those of us that did join and serve will probably just look, and then either shake our heads with an included eye-roll or just walk by.

I did eyeroll, nipped in to agree, walking back out now.

Regardless of motivations of Scheller and other people in the military (my son built his resume to get into the military, where I suspect he will stay for a career, as opposed to going into the military to build a resume) -

I still want to get a meaningful review of the Afghanistan war and the exit. Marines did needlessly die, weapons were needlessly left there, and Americans and allies are still stranded.

I started this thread thinking the topic was important on several fronts.

Scheller is now a civilian but he opened himself up to comments and scrutiny and provided an opportunity to learn about responsibility and accountability above and below him in his chain of command. I agreed with lots of what he said but didn't like the platform from which he said it. He was CO of the advanced infantry course on the east coast. A high profile and important billet.

I heard back then from a reliable source that Scheller was about to get fired from that job due to the "lack of confidence in his ability to command" type of issues. I was told some specifics but the important thing is, he timed his manifesto just before his boss was about to fire him. His supporters erupted but the Marine Corps couldn't say anything about the situation.

He isn't the martyr he would like to be portrayed as.

Nothing builds a resume like:

-A total of 6 years away from family, on FOB deployments

-A shredded lower spine, busted right hip and knee, and permanent scarring in one eye

-15 dead friends

-repetitive nightmares

-a large chunk of the population who sharp-shoots your occupation, and calls it wrong/evil/unjustified...while never being in the position to even begin to understand what it takes to do what you're ordered to do.

Yep......I did it all, just so I could get a job, later.

What an asinine thing to say.....

Yes....the Majority that server go their to start a career, whether enlisted or commissioned. Personally I felt DevDoc insulted majority of those that have served. Roll your eyes Karen.

Outrageous to call @Capt MJ Karen. Perhaps the best person on this site.

I hope my son becomes as good of a person and officer as she is.

You can agree with an officer’s view and sentiments but disagree with his/her approach.

You can disagree with both.
You can also deflect from the views and sentiments because the approach was wrong.

I joined to go to Sea and see the world (Yes, "To see the sea") and I did get to see the sea and lots of other places as well
while supporting and defending the Constitution against all enemies foreign and domestic.
