West Point Cadets involved with Drugs on Spring Break

They need to investigate the whole football team. 6 of them doing cocaine? Unfortunately I doubt it was limited to just them if that many are involved.

4 did cocaine and 2 got sick giving them CPR I believe.
That's true, but honestly I don't think it really matters. They were there with them and knew what was going on. Guarantee the other 2 wouldn't have reported anything if medical didn't get involved.

True about jumping to conclusions based on news stories. And I'm not going to assume the 2 that are reported to have gotten sick giving CPR would not have reported what could be criminal felonies by fellow cadets. Others could've been there too. Hopefully we will find out the facts fairly soon.

Hopefully the facts aren't as presented in these initial news stories.

This article as I read it does not say 6 football players from WP ODd Although they may have.

It says six people ODd. And it says at least two from WP were admitted. It does not claim that those two were admitted because they were using drugs.

I’d be waiting unti an actual news report, maybe tomorrow, with some facts is done before I’d be going all Judge Roy Bean as so many seem to do in these situations.

This is so disappointing. I told my three teenage kids about this tonight at dinner as a cautionary tale. I explained everything that happened. They had lots of questions. I left out the fact that they were West Point football players until the very end. When I told them who these kids were, their jaws almost hit the table. Their reactions went from disappointment to complete shock. Like it or not...Service Academy kids are held to a higher standard. These are the future leaders of our military. This is so disappointing.

I think there is also more disappointment over misdeeds by SA students because taxpayers are funding their education.

There are now many outlets, such as CBS saying the 6 were cadets. Just Google it.

I am not suggesting WP students did not take drugs and OD. Because like the rest here I have no idea what actually happened there.

I just have not seen a statement from the police or from WP saying that 6 WP students involved And ODd. Only that 6 people were involved. Some being WP students. And not that some WP students took drugs.

Words matter

Edited:

the only confirmation I have seen from WP is that two of their students were among the 6. Again no statement from WP saying that their students were the ones taking drugs. Only that they were hospitalized.

And what two in that house would I put my money on being the ones giving cpr ?

NYT reporting that five were cadets.

Thousands of potential appointees would willingly give their lives for service to this country and the honor of attending a SA. As a hopeful candidate, this profoundly disappoints me, and even makes me question how a process that puts so many people through such an involved application process, can result in failures of this magnitude. The 2020 math cheating scandal I was willing to brush off as just some relatively harmless stupidity. This kind of news cuts to my core.

I hope everyone recovers but this makes me question this process and whether USMA is for me.

You should probably get off your high horse before you show up or you’ll be sorely disappointed.

If all are cadets what is the punishment? Separation??
They should be fully investigated, drug tested, and then let the UCMJ run its course. If they are innocent, they must be returned to the academy in full standing. If they are not, then they must be prosecuted to the full extent of military justice.

Will that happen? I don't know...how would that look for USMA? And don't, for a second, think that's not being looked at.

I would urge all to wait on judgment and pray for these kids and their families. There is absolutely no way to know what happened based on media reports. The Daily Mail is In the business of selling clicks. I never read the National Inquirer either. This is sad on so many levels. Why castigate of young adults that are fighting for their lives?

The vast majority of cadets and midshipmen move through their SA time and service time without managing to do things of this magnitude. The media does not report on that. The relative few who engage in cheating scandals, drugs, sexual assault, theft, murder (look up David Graham and Diane Zamora) and other misconduct that rises to the level of crime, will always put a SA in the spotlight. Plan to be one of the many who manage not to do things this bad.

Midshipmen and cadets reflect the society they are drawn from. No screening process can test for rash decision-making if there is no history of it. No one mentions this in an essay or interview. Every human being is flawed; every human being is capable of making decisions that lead down a bad path. If there is truth in the stories floating around, I expect these cadets were the same as you, young people who worked hard for their appointment, never dreaming all the factors would come together one day such that a decision would be made that led to this outcome.

Pragmatically, service academies and the military plan for attrition for various reasons. Misconduct is one of them.

You can control who you are. USMA is an institution that demands holding yourself to a higher standard. Wouldn’t you rather be at an institution that at least tries to do this in terms of culture, and generally succeeds? No doubt drug-related incidents occur at Regular U, but the story isn’t picked up by every news outlet. If you manage to obtain an appointment, you will navigate the same challenges and pressures, and you will have to be vigilant and self-aware, especially with regard to peer pressure, impulse-driven behavior, and magical thinking that can combine to drive decisions with bad outcomes.
