Coach Ken is not coming back for 2023.

Band aids have to be ripped off sometimes. Pain will happen. What matters is your bedside manner and the AD had none.
Not sure we know that the AD had no “bedside manner.” We don’t know what was said and how it was said.

We know the bandaid was taken off sooner rather than later.

Agree I wasn't a fly on the wall. But based on the interviews with Coach Ken, it wasn't great.

Some people's wounds are too big .... Band aids are useless ... I want that person to be NAVY's next head football coach

"First Down NAAAVVVVYYYYY !!!!!"

I’m no lawyer but looking at the language of the NAAA constitution, the separation between USNA and NAAA is porous nonexistent. Buck stops with Buck. Tax paying public would have a hard time seeing a difference.
The only separation is in finances, which is good and proper.

However, there is no way an SA could give up institutional control of and ultimate veto power over of it's Athletic Department. That being said, with Gladchuck in place for 20+ years (compare that to the tenure of USNA superintendents and Military Administrators), he probably exercises almost total departmental control, with an attitude to boot. And he doesn't have a core of high dollar donors to push him around. Please enlighten me if I'm wrong.

The University of Nebraska head coach was fired abruptly after the third game of this season and before the 6 o'clock news that evening. The story goes that UN-L's largest donor to the the Athletic Dept. met the AD following the game in the corridor servicing the skyboxes and said "Fire him. I'll cover the cost of his contract." The terms of the contract were:

Nebraska fired Frost on September 11, 2022, the day after Georgia Southern upset the Cornhuskers at home 45-42. Frost was owed a $16.4 million buyout. Due to a clause that came from restructuring his contract, Nebraska would have only owed Frost about $8.7 million if he was fired after October 1st, 2022.

I'm sure the only call UN President Ted Carter (yes. That Ted Carter) or UN-L Chancellor Ronnie Green received was to inform them that it wouldn't cost the University.

Those Corp sponsors on those jumbo trons want wins ….
Clearly, you're talking about the sponsors at Navy and Marine Corps Stadium and you could not be further from the truth.

The major sponsors like Navy Federal, Northrop Grumman, Lockheed, Boeing, and USAA are NOT there to ally themselves with the team, they are there to show support to USNA itself and the broader Navy and Marine Corps. They were there in the bad old days when Navy rarely won and were also there when we had 11 win seasons. I actually worked for a couple of the major sponsors and was "in" on some of the sponsorship discussions at one of them so I KNOW that the won/loss record or specific football prospects was not even part of the considerations that were discussed.

I second this, as I also worked for one of the major sponsors. They are there to become familiar to the next generations of officers headed to the Fleet and Corps. Team records were of little interest. The
exposure of the brand to midshipmen was the primary business objective of the sponsorship contract.

While I agree that change happens and sometimes needs to be forced to happen, I believe it would have been good will to let him finish out the one remaining year he had left on his contract. In an industry that has no loyalty (sports in general), Coach Ken has been there for 25 years and to me, that's worth letting him finish on "good" terms.

I would add "worth letting him finish on 'his' terms." If you are a USNA coach (of any sport), and you are being recruited away or tempted by greener pastures, the way someone of his resume was dismissed would likely be enough to convince anyone to go ahead and punch their ticket out of USNA.

... Awesome

Having seen Army do something like this 20 years ago with Bob Sutton, I have a suspicion Navy will come to regret this decision. After Army fired Sutton, Army football went into the wilderness for 15 years (mirrored by the long losing streak). Of course there were other factors that led to Army's problems then. But Academy football does not have to worship at the altar of bowl games and conference championships.

Niumatalolo was a good man who cared deeply about his players and the Naval Academy. He deserved some degree more respect than was shown here at the end.

I agree. Next season will really tell. With 22 returning seniors and essentially a new AAC they should do well. If they don’t, it bodes poorly for the future.

There are 2601 signatures on a change.org petition to “fire Chet Gladchuk.” People are still talking about how it was done.
Real question: do those petitions (I’ve also seen other ones to #FireChet circulating) do anything? One I saw recently, requested more transparency into NAAA. And accounting of monies (also ‘fire Chet).

Or, will it all die down, with the season break.

My guess is the later. Also my guess is no one cares whether we, from the stands, sign a petition or not. I guess if there are CERTAIN signatures, it might make a difference. But I always wonder what the effectiveness of signing a petition like this is.

Press visibility and negative news. The Navy and USNA are just as aware of their brand identity as any for-profit company. The petition itself has no weight - any news generated by it does.

A peek into universal Navy culture - we like to think of ourselves as a service who does things with class, in a proper manner. Cue Russell Crowe in “Master and Commander” as CAPT Jack Aubrey, RN, sipping tea from the ship’s fine china on deck, on the very brink of going into harm’s way.

Anything with an “ick factor” or lacking class does not sit well. There are ways to accomplish things with grace.

Petition probably has zero influence. The Supe is a short-timer - he could be one of two minds: (1) sound like not my problem or (2) “I’m done with it all in August and this is my last act as a Flag Officer”. That’s if he has the authority to make such a change. I could see him do a Howard Hamlin on Charles McGill and expeditiously thank him for his service and show him the door (Better Call Saul reference for the uninitiated). But he would need a replacement ready and vetted first. And he would want to wait a bit so he doesn’t look like he is capitulating to things like petitions.

I know it is not ok to go around punching people in the mouth anymore which is why I have a list of people that just may get hit when I retire. But figuratively speaking looks like Coach Ken got sucker punched and maybe his big brother needs to go have a chat with Chet.
