New Student Indoctrination (Summer 2019)

My son is attending the first session also. He will be a freshman at UMaine. I have a question about the sports physical. He turned in his along with his immunization record. His physical was done on 8/18 so not within 90 days. I would think they would tell him he needed a new one if that one was outdated. I figured it was good as long as it wasn't over a year old. Anyone else have any info on this?

I think he better go get one. The 90 day rule sounds very strict.

We used the below form and got it done quickly. Our daughter was within the year but not 90 days. We had to pay out of pocket bc our insurance only covers one sports physical a year. I wouldn’t risk it and expect the office to have flagged per the designation on the info the kids got. They are allowed to bring it with them when they arrive along with a physical copy of everything they submitted to their unit coordinator.
Thanks for all the answers he just called and they said wow we don't know how that snuck through without being caught. Yes you better go get one. He is running to a minute clinic now to go get one. Phew!

Anyone see anything about their Candidate dressing up to report in their email/instructions?

I was wondering the same thing. Welcome letter in the original package mentions the official packing list, but nothing since then.

I was told bring only the clothes on your body, paperwork, wallet, and phone

There was a fairly detailed breakdown posted/ shared in the travel orders thread yesterday in the form of screenshots of a unit’s correspondence. It appears to have been taken down and that may be due to those screenshots showing personal emails of some of those who had rec’d.

The packing highlights are attached. Additionally a sports physical done within the last 90 days and immunization record were noted to be hand carried along.

Our DD rec’d an email from her unit coordinator tonight to expect a FedEx tomorrow with her travel orders and additional information. This package needs signed for so we are all wiggling our days around to be sure someone is home to receive and sign for the package. She leaves Monday to check in Tuesday at NSi.

Yes. Business casual is required. Example; Polo type shirt, chinos and not sneakers .... basically. Well groomed.

Someone in another thread shared this (attached) yesterday from their unit coordinator.

OMG - my daughter just got a call from OSU and now she IS going to session 1. What an emotional rollercoaster for her.[/QUOT
Could it be just a female thing at OSU - are there boys that were told the funding fell through?
There is absolutely no way they would cancel something for the women and not the men. Talk about legal issues....
Also since it's a Navy thing it can't be issues with funding at the unit level (who get their money from the Navy for this stuff if they are responsible for it).
Unfortunately, in 2019 this still happens. My daughter was told, by her unit yesterday, there is no room left to send any more females to NSI Session 1. My DD on four year scholarship will be one of two in the unit being left behind. Both of the midshipman being left behind are female. She earned the scholarship, but yet her gender is keeping her from attending.

Flabbergasted! Say what?

Is she NROTC Navy, Marine or Nursing Option? Our DD is NROTC Nursing Option 4 year scholarship. We thought if anyone would be cut from NSI it would be Nurse Corps kids. Her school isn’t doing a separate orientation prior to the start of fall semester. That could be a contributing factor. I think you said or i read somewhere here Ohio State is still doing that. My brother (USMC) says kids not attending will not be behind or at a disadvantage but it is disappointing to not be a part of the commradery that will develop among the mix of schools represented. The school units will do the bulk of preparation for their futures post commissioning. Silver lining ..... she has 3 weeks to make the most of and enjoy more summer fun.

NROTC 4 year scholarship recipient. Her school is doing a 4 day NSO prior to the beginning of school. She had summer plans, but cancelled them due to NSI. She can not go now either way she has been placed on the wait list for session 2. So she can't make any plans. They will be behind she is not receiving the same training as her peers. I am an USAF spouse and understand how the military works, but this is ridiculous. Why doesn't NSI have enough accommodations for everyone?

Did anyone receive information regarding what they need to know for NSI? I go second session and I just realized they did not send me any information that I must memorize...

This is just unfortunately how ROTC works. For CORTRAMID I didn’t receive orders or a time to go to the airport until hours before I had to board the plane. For Sea Trials we were repeatedly told it was “basically mandatory.” They proceeded to cancel it for 200 MIDN at JAX. Then decided to not send some units anywhere at all, with another 100 MIDN simply not given a chance to go anywhere. Just last week they cancelled it for another 200 in phase 3 and 4. Simply how it is

Thank you for sharing. We did not get an email like this. I noticed the part about proper grooming standards? Would anyone who attended last year recommend getting a haircut first or will all the (at least male) midshipmen candidates get a haircut on the first day like they do at USNA?

Nothing sent and my DD leaves Monday. She looked up online an officer training study guide ... to understand and identify ranks and courtesies. It’s said most important to arrive with good fitness.

I’d say ... get a clean and tidy haircut prior. Look up Navy grooming standards online.

My DD did not get an email or any idea of what was what from her unit either. This was something someone shared earlier this week that came from their unit. Penn State, I believe.

I recieved something a while back saying that a proper haircut will be given at the start of NSI

Our DD is set to leave tomorrow for NSI. She has her flight confirmed. She is attending NCSU and we visited the NROTC office there about a week ago and sounds like all of their midshipman candidates are going.

Our DD is leaving tomorrow. She didn’t get an exact list that is shown below. Just bits and parts of it. We aren’t sure if she’s allowed to bring her cell phone. Our only worry with that is if her flight changes or she needs to contact her point of contact front be college-if she’s going to have to ask around the airport if she can use their phone or computer. She received a list of what to bring but it didn’t say that said she needs 5 copies of her orders, running shoes, glasses, medications, or cell phone. Not sure why all candidates going didn’t get this same list??

They are instructed to bring their cell phones per the NSI website. What unclear is whether they will remain in their possession after check in.

And yes ..... some receiving info to prepare others are not is perplexing.

There are some lists listed here and school to school they have varied in format and detail. That’s why this a great resource.

Ready and doing research last year was a NSI beta test with a two week session for a smaller group of rising 4th year students, this year is the first national 3 week NSI with two sessions so there is bound to be some kinks in the system rolling it out nationally.

I am very excited that the Navy has created this program so the Midn have an opportunity to attend as the NROTC Class of 2023 and have a jump start as leaders in the Fleet.
