2024 Job Drops?

Job drops 9/22. Each squadron does their own event. In the past I’ve seen it live streamed and some have done DH. Relay races events, like pie eating and obstacles. Each squadron will come up with their own event and how they share.

Supe told them 9/22 is the drop date. Our DD though was told this past Friday by her AOC of her job as it wasn't her top 3. That being said, after speaking with leadership and others in her squad (a cpl prior enlisted), it's a great job for her. Amazing leadership opportunity and deployment likely.

She was also told there are 150 or so less pilot slots this year due to backlog (not enough training avail). One of her 2023 friends who received a pilot slot is still at the Academy waiting to get to flight training.

FYI, for those curious...the current USAF UPT backlog exceeds 900 officers "waiting."
(as of last week)
So how screwed are '25 cadets wanting to be a pilot? Last year didn't they assign people pilot who didn't even want to be a pilot?

I'm a 23 grad and projected to not start UPT until Dec 2024... unfortunately her class will be impacted the most by reducing slots. Maybe even 25 too but I personally suspect they won't be impacted as severely as 24. Good luck to your daughter!

Wow! I first read it as December of 2023 but 2024??
As you know, your 10 year committment doesn't start to run until you pin on wings so you'll have close to 13 years in by then.
Did you do a 1 year assignment or are you at a base?
Maybe some Redtails will be up & running for you to train in!

Correct, I'll be clocking in at around 13 years minimum. I hope to have a career in so for me personally, that is fine. I'm at a base and trying to knockout a few masters classes. If I knew it would be until Dec 24 I would've taken grad school more seriously... but I am learning a lot where I currently am!

I just had 48 JROTC cadets at USAFA and the two "Butter Bars" (2Lt's, 2023 grads) that escorted my cadets at the academy airmanship squadrons are both slated for Laughlin AFB for UPT. They both said they've been told 12-16 months from now, but they don't have firm dates.

The backlog started in 1993 with BRAC closing two UPT bases, it is further exacerbated by the procurement process for a replacement trainer, and finally retaining instructors. At the end of the day, it boils down to pi$$ poor leadership at the highest levels. The T-7 is a perfect example. They could have bought the BAE Hawk, off the shelf, that every other modern Air Force flies. I could rant about this history going back 30+ years. I had to wait 11 months between commissioning in May 1988 and UPT Apr 1989.

That was very early. Seems like last year they were dropped after classes were over. Again, hope everyone received what they wanted.

I wonder what it the pressure must be like for the CO of pilot training. Given the mandate to graduate more pilots than last year must be constant and intense but the training aircraft are old (& breaking down more often), the civilian instructors are few, as are the IP's, etc...
The only way I can think of would be to push the students out in a lesser-qualified state & have the squadrons finish what used to be taught at UPT. Kicking the can down the road as the saying goes.
I view the Virtual Reality (see what I did there) training as a stop-gap measure at best.
On the other hand, if the CO could pull off an increased graduation rate-I'm thinking that would have to impress a promotion board.

As of last week the washout rate at Columbus was 18%, that is half of what it used to be. Gleen from that what you will, but I doubt the students are twice as talented.
