2027 State Nominations Thread

congrats! My son received one as well from Cassidy today (Air Force Academy). Have you heard from Kennedy? we saw he had two nominations in his portal… Sen 81 and 82… it senator 81 is listed twice? Not sure what those all mean? Good luck to you!
I have not heard from Kennedy yet, no. Congrats to your son too. 👍

I'm waiting to apply for nominations until the school year is over and my resume is stronger (please correct me if waiting till ~June for nom applications is bad). I've been looking at all the websites for my nom sources and the only one lacking any information is Sen. Fetterman. Is this a cause for concern, or should I just contact him directly if his website is still blank when I decide to apply?

Assuming you are a junior - I would read the nominating sources’ deadlines and instructions and follow them. They will tell you when to apply.

I would also contact Sen. Fetterman’s office for info about when he will have info available.

My son called and a senator put him on a mailing list and sent it to him when available.

Just keep checking on a regular basis, perhaps a few times a week. Don’t pester staffers unless you have a substantive question - or just do 1 call to politely inquire.

The Senators and Representatives may conduct their nom process any way they wish - when their websites open for the next cycle, submission deadlines, materials requested, interview/no interview, criteria applied, notifications, etc. Some websites may not update for the next cycle until this cycle closes out. Their only deadline is when their slates (lists) of nominations are due to the SA.

It is very early in the Class of 2028 cycle. The usual advice here is “Submit your best quality applications for noms, SAs and ROTC scholarships is “submit your best-quality package as early as possible.” Find the balance.

I would also follow Capt MJ and not listen to me when we have differing answers. ;)

I would only call Sen. Fetterman because he is sick and his staff is new. You might be doing them a favor.

My advice is to wait until a reasonable amount of time before nomination deadlines are due to apply for them. You don’t get bonus points for being super early. You can start gathering the items you will need and start writing essays and things that are required, but chances are your achievements will increase and even your writing will mature as you do. Start your essay, start your resume and identify the individuals you are going to ask to write recommendations. That is plenty to get you started until late summer/early fall. If you submit early summer it’s just going to sit in someone’s inbox until they are all received and reviewed anyway.

Nominations applications will not be due until the fall, so you are in good shape at the moment. I'm sure the Senator's lead staff member will have things posted by mid-summer or earlier.

You can anticipate much of what will likely be required: recommendations letters (typically around three), school transcripts, SAT/ACT scores, a résumé, and an essay response (TBD). Most Senators use an online tool called "OAM" which will allow you to upload documents and complete an online application. I recommend preparing now so that you are ready for the nomination application when it is open. Many of my students are waiting on the new details now as updates usually occur in the April/May timeframe, and sometimes later. Good luck!

There is merit to that thought. An elected official and staff are there to serve their constituents. A good query like this might kickstart the “oh, yeah, where is that pasdown folder about service academies” conversation.

I was thinking along this same line, in this case. He has some medical issues, and an all new staff. They might appreciate an informal ‘heads up’, so to speak.

It is still early, but I would keep an eye on this.

It is still very very early to be doing nom applications in PA. Absolutely work on essays and get teacher recommendations going, but you have a lot of time before the nomination applications are even open much less due in PA. I would sit tight a little longer and I certainly wouldn't be bugging their offices about it yet.

@Jabor3 is spot on for PA noms. Most MOCs will require your official transcript through the end of junior year, so June or July would be a good time to have your package ready to submit for nomination.

My DS is trying to plan ahead and look at requirements. Both Illinois Senators have a small online application to be filled out. They say nothing about any essays or letters of recommendation. Our MOC requires both. Is he missing something? I assume if they are required it would be listed as needed in their online information.

Elected officials have the freedom to conduct their nom process anyway they wish - what they require, how submitted, deadlines, interviews/no interviews, etc.

Is it the actual application?

Iirc - my son had to fill out a small “application” for a senator - and the actual application came to him after.

Also - preplanning isn’t a big deal imo. They all gave plenty of time and clear instructions. It is good to stay on top of everything and be organized - but I haven’t seen too many candidates who couldn’t meet requirements.

I believe it is the full application, it includes transcripts, SAT scores etc. He only wanted to plan ahead to get his letters of recommendation lined up and work on the essays. We had heard that Senator Duckworth required multiple essays in past years. No big deal if they don't require them, it will make things easier.
