So at this point I am a 3q candidate with two nominations for USAFA and still have not heard anything back. I accepted my AROTC scholarship knowing I can withdraw it. I also accepted my AFROTC scholarship and that is what I am leaning towards right now. When should I give up hope for the Academy and put down my deposit for my school? I have to enter by may 1st and that brings some complications if I wait till the last minute because I am just waiting to hear back from USAFA. Also, how do I withdraw my AROTC scholarship? Do I contact cadet command or the school detachment? Any and all advise is appreciated. Thank you

There are older threads that speak to people in your situation. From what I can recall from them is that withdrawing your AROTC scholarship in order to attend the Academy is no big deal. For the collage deposit, several have suggested contacting the college, explaining your situation and exploring the possibility of a refund if accepted to the Academy. Some colleges have refunded, others not, again from what I recall. Also, previous posters have stated of knowing cadets offered appointments in June 1-2 weeks before In-processing-rare, but it seems to have happened.

Try using the Search function if you haven't already. Continue to hang in for Plan A, see if your school will allow you to tweak Plan B, & remember, if your goal is to commission as an officer in the AF, ROTC's become 2nd Lts the same as Academy grads-Good Luck.

FWIW

An applicant from DS high school about 8 years ago received a call from USAFA 48 hours before I-Day telling him a spot had opened - & he went. So it really does happen.
Yes, someone in my sons class (he’s a C3C) had accepted an appointment to another school and thought his Academy chances were done. They offered an appointment last minute too. Wishful gave great advice, search previous posts for threads of similar situations. Remember, you’re still in it: but secure your plan b or c schools.

I'll answer the second part first. You send the check, or whatever, to the college at the last possible moment while still meeting the May 1 deadline. This is probably some time around April 23 or perhaps a day or two later. The answer to the first part is you don't give up hope until you get the TWE. If you do get an appointment you can still accept it. So you're out a college deposit in exchange for a full ride. Who cares? Mom and Dad would be elated right along side you.

As a reminder: Twin B had his full deposit refunded AND his spot held for a full year at his Plan B school.

Twin A's money was kept by the (snotty liberal east coast) college, where the admissions office was not exactly cordial. So, he lost $500. What's that? The cost of English 101 text books?

I feel for all that have not heard as of yet. My DD’s Plan B is at a University where she will be playing softball. Her High School does a College Signing Breakfast for all those fortunate enough to play college sports. I called and explained this to the recruiting office and they still said she may not know their final decision until mid April. Not sure what to do about the breakfast... in light of a possible rejection from USAFA on appointment, the breakfast recognition for playing at plan b would help to build her back up emotionally. As all of you know, this sure has been a long process indeed! Praying that we find something out before Thursday . I keep saying God has a plan—now it’s up to him.
Good luck to everyone :)

Yes keep her going on plan B ! I think keeping the kids that are waiting for word from the academy focused on there plan B is a good thing , they need to realize that putting all their eggs in one basket is not how life really goes . All good military strategic leaders need to have more than one plan in place , it’s good practice for them further in life ! I understand the emotions involved , still waiting on DS word for 2022 appointment . We’re just holding out for hope but making sure he has something to look forward to in case of TWE ! Also tell her not to give up , academies look favorably on reapplicants !

@Wishful is very correct about last minute appointments— my dad received his three days before. That being said, this is very unique, but does happen.

Last year, we were in this same situation of waiting. The last week of April, I told my DS he needed to proceed with Plan B as he had an AF-ROTC scholarship. He submitted his deposit to the university and at the end of that week he received his USAFA appointment. I believe Plan B refunded the money to him. This left eight weeks to finish all the requirements prior to I-day and finish high school graduation. The one thing USAFA did not allow us to finish was getting his wisdom teeth removed as he was within the 8 weeks. There was not a dull moment, however our DS made it to I-day and is finding success at USAFA. Keep your options open as there is hope in these next few weeks. As difficult as it was waiting for the appointment and knowing the time at USAFA stretches and challenges our DS, we could not be more grateful for this amazing opportunity that he has.

Pretty much the same situation for us. I forced DS to visit his plan B school at admitted students day since it was now mid April and he hadn’t heard anything from USAFA. He toured the AFROTC dept and spent much of our time talking with students involved. He ended up accepting his AFROTC scholarship and the college scholarship. Fortunately they waived the housing deposit because of his scholarships. Just a few days after we had settled with everything, on April 28 2017, his portal was updated with his appointment to USAFA.
