Hey folks! I'm moving from Long Beach, CA to San Diego, CA for college and I'm planning on joining the AFROTC Detachment down there. Since I'm moving right out of high school and due to my situation I'm on my own -- I decided it would be wisest to wait a year between moving and starting AFROTC just to get situated financially and get accostumed to a new city. I was planning on taking a few units during that gap year (but still ensuring I have 12 units for next year so I qualify as a full time student) but I wanted to clarify if this would cause any issues at all. I don't think it will but just to be sure I wanted to gather some opinions.

Thanks :)

As I understand this issue, your AFROTC scholarship cannot be put on hold. You would have to reapply. If you don't have a scholarship and were joining once you got to college, then it shouldn't be a problem. You can always visit the unit and talk to them.

I encourage you to visit the AFROTC official page - https://www.afrotc.com/scholarships/college/types/ to learn about the high school (HSSP) and in-college (ICSP) scholarships that the Air Force offers both so that you can explore options to compete for a scholarship before you start college and as a college programmer whence you arrive and start school in a year.

I also encourage you if you're "on your own" to explore social services that may be available to you to help you with medical coverage, housing assistance, food stamps, job searches, relocation if needed to help you get on your feet. the last thing you need is a large medical bill while you're trying to get your feet under you. Adulting can be daunting for a new HS graduate and there are services available to help you if needed. Your parent/ guardian's income may not necessarily factor into decisions if you are an independent adult or you can discuss emancipated minor options with a free legal aid counselor. Hope that helps.
