My dd was emailed this morning : Based upon the results of the academic screening and evaluation of your application, you have been found to be academically qualified and have been placed on the national waiting list as a Hold Candidate.

This is such an emotional roller coaster ... so she is planning to go to her 3rd choice school (still have not heard from her 2nd choice) but she is holding on to hope.

I am not real familiar with USMMA, but from what I have seen here, your DD is in a good position as all qualified applicants are placed in a hold status until later in the cycle. ONLY those candidates in the hold status are offered appointments as I understand it. So sit back and hopefully that appointment will be forthcoming.:groupwave:

I was put on hold for about 2 months. I received one of the five spots from Alabama on February 27th. The academy is probably moving from state to state and pretty soon to the national rankings. Do not be discouraged. The best things come with a little patients

How do we find out how many spots are from each state? We live in California.

patients is right! excruciating

Is Maryland 4 spots?
Yes, but don't read too much into this. The numbers by state appears exclusive to USMMA given their small size and need to allocate seats according to national population distribution. See my post on this:

Understand that each state is not guaranteed to fill this many seats (this was the Wisconsin lawsuit) and some will get more than this number of seats based on how well applicants do off the national wait list. The goal for the academy is to work towards this distribution as they make appointment offers BEFORE 1 APRIL. After this date, we transition to the National Wait List where you sit as a member of the HOLD status club. In my opinion, this is the most exciting phase because it really becomes a meritocracy and your rank is your rank. The cut line is the cut line. BOOM! (Sorry, I dig seeing students put in the effort and then we watch to see if it was good enough to achieve the goal).

Let's say candidate A is a principal/other primary and decides to not accept an appointment to KP. If there is a candidate B from the same state but got put onto NWL due to overflow of candidates from the same state, then does candidate B have a chance of replacing candidate A's allotted state slot (and therefore getting off of the NWL, and presumably getting an appointment or greater chance of acceptance)?

Depends on the timing of the declined appointment. The earlier it is declined before April 1, the better the chance that someone else from that MOC will get an offer. After April 1, NWL offers are made according to merit. Good luck.

My DS received an email last night that he is academically qualified and has been placed on the national waitlist and his application is on HOLD status. I know this is not a yes, but I am trying to stay positive at this point because of the current situation. He desperately needs some good news considering life is completely on hold right now due to this pandemic situation. It is heartbreaking that his senior class is possibly going to miss out on so many of the usual senior activities. This news has come as a ray of hope!!!

While we called it something different way back when, many of us alumni were NOT principal appointments, but alternates. . . . I guess it all depends on how far down the list your son is. We were told (via snail mail) and also whether or not an eventual appointment was likely or not. . .

Our Liaison Officer informed us that this practice has stopped, however it sounds like you can call and get similar information --

I was put on hold on March 5th. I called my admissions officer yesterday and he told me I was in the top 20% of the hold list. I was told I had about a 60% chance of getting in. Today I was informed I had been given an appointment through my senator.

Yes, I would say this is a GREAT bit of news. We are quite an analytical bunch here in the SA community as we interpret signs and tea leaves... but look at this data: https://www.usmma.edu/class-profile

I interpret the "Met Selection Criteria" line item as representing the HOLD status. THEN (hear me say that in my best Garth impersonation from Waynes World), you consider the"Appointments Offered" line. AND THEN we do the math to see that they offered appointments to 72% of the HOLD list. These offers resulted in the 280 acceptances by candidates.

@ohiomom2, I know your DS is disappointed at what he is missing right now, but you can assure him that USMMA will provide him with lots of formal dances and award ceremonies that will make up for it. Stay strong!
@kpmom2013 yes he absolutely knows this and looks forward to all it has to offer. He is mostly sad because he is very close with so many friends and wanted to enjoy these last few months. NO ONE from his high school has ever gone to or even applied for SA so none of them even have a clue with this process looks like! My parent friends and sports parents know because I have explained so much to them. He just wants to enjoy being a teenager with his friends for a few more months and isn't able to.
