Any appointments yet?

It *seems* a lot of the early announcements last week were tied to a coach or sports team. I'm wondering of those were prioritized further amongst the EA applications.

My son got his application in on 10/10 but didn't have the connections with a coach like others do. Every dad believes their kids have competitive applications but I'd love to know the true holistic factors that go into the schools decision process.

Also possible that student were contacted that aren't on this forum.
That all seems very possible. Something else…my daughter had her app in 9/1. She took the ACT again in late Oct and scored near perfect in reading which brought her composite superscore up 2 points. She sent to her AO and he was good about getting it added to her application packet. Also, mid semester progress reports came out at at school and she had straight A’s so sent that in as well and they added it. Not sure how much those things may have moved the needle, but it’s cool that they’ll take supplemental documents mid process.

I’d highly recommend anyone with new test scores, grades, new awards or sports accolades to send to their AO. Can’t hurt!

Out of curiosity. If one is applying early admission to CGA I would think CGA is ones top picks to attend for college /SA. Majority of the selection happens during early admissions. Reg admissions has a a huge slice of the pie coming out during reg admission from CGAS ascension. So the appointments given during reg action is much smaller.

Why be undecided when given the appointment during early action? I know the deadline and decisions time frame for other SA and ROTC like branches scholarships. Just thinking you should know what want ( CGA ) at this point, why be undecided? There is a big difference from CGA and other SAs and it extends to the missions once one graduates. ( again i feel this should already be the deciding factor to accept or decline) I even think at this point one should know whether they want a SA experience over a reg college experience with a service component.

I have no skin in the game anymore but often help others still apply. I get holding onto CGAS during early admissions because it turns into 5 years of college instead of 4.

For one, many applicants are also applying to other SAs. Other SAs require nominations which in most cases lengthen the process. At the end of this you will see many people declined and accepted other SA. One example, but a big one.

Interesting facts about acceptance from CGAS in the regular pool. On the tour in early Oct, we asked the tour guide about EA and she had differing views on applying EA based on advice she was given. DS was well along his application packages at that point (after a lot of pressure from dad) and we thought it wise to get it in, get it done, and have "two looks" and hopefully not need the second.

This is the only SA my DS is applying to.

I see someone linked my question from a few days ago above.

Keep in mind that applying EA does not guarantee “two looks.” Many who are not selected EA do get deferred to RA, but another possibility is to be declined outright with no deferral.

I get the nomination aspect for the other SA’s Thats why I said, “Why be undecided when given the appointment during early action? If an applicant is still waiting for a nomination to another SA hitting Dec1st knowing the applications to the other SA are due end of January, I question the applicants true feelings to which service they want to be in.

Yes, good point and we knew that as well.
With your applicant who is fully committed to CGA, getting in the application into EA makes sense. Its not just about a second look. Its the CGAS, waitlist possibilities during EA. You have your non SA back up plans put into place as well.
The CGAS numbers coming into the spring. They are required to reapply but it can only be during Reg action. Over the years CGAS was anywhere between 30-60ish? Most of those CGAS numbers are guaranteed appointments. Thats 30-60 less appintments during reg action.

I tell people besides listening to any advice I can give them to follow SA forums. Pay attention to the numbers Objee posts. Not everyone posts on here on the acceptance thread I know, but if you are sitting on the appointment and we are entering end of April thats bothersome to me.

I remember one of the kids classmate was waitlisted til 2 weeks before Day 1. It was a scramble for their family. I met a young lady at meet and greet 1st week of June who was sitting on Navy, Airforce and CGA appointments. She never visited CGA or Naval Academy. Heck she wasnt sure if she wanted a military career but AF was her favorite as it was only one she visited. 🙄

I think there are so many variables. My son last year got a CGA appt in Nov, but CGA was his 2nd choice. He didn't hear from his first choice until end of Jan. IF he didn't get his first choice he takes CGA. These are basically 18 year olds (give or take). Some kids just want to fly for instance, and are open to any branch. At CGA it's not common to get aviation right out of the Academy for instance. So you get CGA EA, but if USNA or USAFA come through later you might consider it. A ton of variables, every situation is different.

I respect that answer. CGA gradaution class probably sends a max of 15 to flight. It is also more than likely a helo career. If an applicant wants flight and the ideal is fixed wing CGA wouldnt be the best choice. Surprisingly USMMA offers flight to all branches. Something I just found out about from a alumni.

My older son who I referenced in my post had USMMA as his first choice and is there now. Younger son is going through the process now.

Great information thanks. I've also seen a lot of good input by the upcoming cadets. I have helped him manage the tours and application process and I think were ahead of some of his peers.

We stopped by VMI and he determined that was not for him. (For some good and some trivial reasons). I think he might have been sitting on the fence about the CGA, but the visit opened his eyes a bit more. (I learned a bunch myself!) Like any 17 year old, you have one conversation with him as a parent and he's having another with his peers, etc. So, when it comes to how he's thinking/leaning, or getting insight into what his peers are doing...well, the answers are clowny or frustrating. (I know where he gets it).

I know this guy will be academically and athletically successful anywhere he goes, but we think this path will put him on solid footing all around.

For the EA appointment notification, the checklist on the bottom right of the Bear's Den homepage disappeared and this is all that remains...
View attachment 13223
click the link and it goes to the application page with this link right below the list of recommendation providers
Congratulations to your daughter! my DS can’t see any sort of checklist. Do you create a portal after application is submitted?

Thank you!

The Bear's Den account sort of is the main portal, and once you start on your application, the "application portal" is automatically created and lies within Bear's Den. I don't know for sure if there's any reference to the application checklist prior to beginning the application. However, it should for sure be there once you start the application. It will be located on the bottom right of his Bear's Den home page.

I believe the CGAS numbers each year are closer to 60-70.

Regarding flight, perhaps this has changed over the years, but in recent years there have been 20-25 pilot slots for each graduating class. However, many cadets go to flight school after 1-2 tours. Coast Guard actually has the highest percentage of pilots out of all the services.

This seems to be a reliable source of somebody who watched the live stream...

The acceptance deadline is May 1. Waiting to accept until close to the deadline does not mean that you are holding a spot that could go to someone else. Each service academy has a pretty good idea of what their yield will be, so gives out the number of appointments that should result in the total class size they are aiming for. Some years, there are no appointments made from the wait list, and other years there might be many. The best thing that anyone can do is put forward their best package, either EA or RA, then do the things you can do to be ready for Day 1 in the event you get an appointment or that last minute pull off the wait list. The cadet handbook with all the requirements is not a secret - last year's should be on the CGA website. Get your passport now rather than later. If you will need a medical waiver, pull together all of the information that might be required. Keep working out.
