Army ROTC 2023-2024 2nd Board

Random question, but I read something put out by U of Tennessee and they were touting the fact that they are one of the few to fill their ROTC program. Has anyone else read that schools in general are having trouble getting kids to participate in ROTC?

It is interesting they "filled" their program. It's my impression that most schools simply have greater capacity than their expected yield. As far as trouble with recruiting, I would assume it is highly situational. For example, VT and Texas AM have thousands of cadets, but some small liberal arts school in Montana might have more trouble.

Edit: It is my impression that anti-rotc sentiment during and following Vietnam has mostly subsided though. I know there were a few schools which had to shut down their rotc programs or almost died out during that time period.

I haven't seen any specific info regarding ROTC participation. Obviously, the military in general is failing to meet its annual recruitment goals by a significant margin. It would be interesting to know whether ROTC scholarship applications and overall partcipation (scholarship and non-scholarship cadets) is down.

DS said he got an email from the ROO at his #1 school UIUC. He has been accepted to the engineering program there. The email was to encourage him to attend UIUC and join their ROTC program. He said that he looked at DS's file and it shows that his file has been looked at by the January board, but it doesn't say yet if he is a winner or not. That's not much help, but that's all I've got. Lol. The wait continues.

I'm sure you're right and it would vary depending on the school. Just curious if it was a trend, like low overall enlistment numbers.

Months ago, I received emails from several schools that I had on my list of schools, as well as from a few schools that were not on my list and that I had never heard of or contemplated attending. My guess is that when you put a school on your list, the ROTC program at that school is notified, and also that when you have an open application, possibly any school with a ROTC program can see that you are interested in ROTC.

My partner has said that ROTC programs have

Yes, my understanding is that this is the case. And, once you've been selected for a scholarship, school ROTC programs will actively reach out and try to bring you to their specific program.

Welp... Looks like it's not going to be today folks. Hopefully tomorrow!
I predicted Next Wednesday when board started. I am sticking to that. If you look at timeline of the last few "second boards" that should be the day. One of my son's schools told him today he heard next week. (2 weeks and 2 days)

They are awarding a lot more scholarships in the second board, so it makes sense that it will take longer than the first board did.

Can't speak on what the schools told but the trend in the past is the Thursday after the board first meets. They met on the 23rd of January last year and results were released on the 2nd of February.

Does anyone have any idea when the application site will go back up? I am applying for third board and need to get started on my application. Is there anything I could do in the meantime? I started my essays and I really don't want to be behind when the site gets fixed.

Lots of things you can do outside of the application site… here are a few suggestions:
-write and edit your essays in a Google doc
-do your resume (can do in Word, Google Doc, Canva, whatever): once this is done it makes it easy to fill in the activities section in the application
-practice your 1-1-1 fitness test
-make sure you have your transcript and Sat/sat score pdfs ready to upload if you haven’t already

To add on from the person above:
- Know the email for your counselor & know that they can submit a little something about your grades & class ranking
- Find a fitness test proctor (you also need their email)
- Information about ur self (height, weight, social, gpa, etc)
- Make a list of your 7 schools that you want & in order. (You can have less, there are some specific rules about private institutions that I don't remember fully though.) -> also, research their rotc programs & if they are a host or satellite school (if that matters to you)
- Know what you are getting into, what life after looks like, etc.
