Army ROTC 2023-2024 2nd Board

Earlier I was able to log in and see my DD's status changed to "Winner". She had received a 4-year national winner letter in the portal in December but had a status of "UNKNOWN" right up until the site went down for maintenance a few days ago. She had emailed to find out why her status was "UNKNOWN" for weeks and they told her that it indicated her scholarship offer came from another source not recognized by the portal (at that time I guess). All this to say that something changed for her during the site maintenance.

I believe something probably changed, but it also seems as though your DD's scholarship was awarded via a route other than the national scholarship review board. So, that still doesn't really tell anything to those of us waiting on January board results.

That said, KUDOS to your DD. I look forward to seeing more details once all is revealed!

Can anyone tag the actual Portal website here? The reason I ask is because before it said down for maintenance and now I can not even use that link anymore. Thanks in advance.

You know what's crazy? My kid is not nervous at all. I'M nervous about it, but him? Cool as a cucumber. If I didn't know better, I'd question if he was even tracking that this week is Board results week.

Maybe because he knows he's all set one way or another? I don't know, but he's totally not anticipatory at all.

My DS is the same! As parents I think we are, at least in some regard, more aware what a big deal this is. Certainly the financial aspect may be a bigger deal to us than it is to them, only because we are more keenly aware of the burden paying for college can present. The ramifications of an ROTC scholarship are huge and life-altering in many respects.

But my DS isn't even convinced results will come out this week. And if he doesn't get a scholarship his plan is to enroll as a college programmer. His favorite saying is "I'll figure it out."

Oh, to be young agsin! 😁

Question for applicants...have you had conversations with the ROOs and/or cadres at the schools you're interested in? My daughter's journey began at the university because she was already a committed athlete. Wondering if that is not the norm.
1) Yes, we had a convo w/ the ROO and PMS at the school where my daughter is a committed DI athlete. She is pursuing ROTC to bring the COA in line with our budget, as her sport "recruits on potential and pays on performance", i.e. no full rides here. She spoke to both the coach and the PMS about if she could successfully participate in both programs. It'll require some sacrifices, like missing her Friday Military Science class when she has an event, and missing practice when she has any FTX or other similar longer trainings, but both programs were enthusiastic.

2) It's definitely not the norm! A tiny % of HS athletes play for NCAA programs, and only a smaller % of those are recruited athletes, vs. walk-ons.

Sorry, I wasn't clear. I know our kiddos are in a small minority being committed athletes (now SIGNED - woo hoo!), I meant I kept seeing confusion on what an ROO was, so made me wonder if those kids have had any conversations with the programs at the schools they are looking at. Obviously our list was small...list of one!! I just wondered if the majority of applicants apply first and then start having the discussions with actual schools as opposed to vice versa like we did.

My DS met with Army ROTC ROO (and cadets in some cases) at four universities he was visiting and considering - during the touring/exploration phase, to learn more about each school’s Army ROTC program, about Army ROTC in general and about careers/life as an Army officer. I don’t know how typical or atypical it is other than LTC Rob Kirkland in his book and website imply that it’s not super common to explore and meet with multiple ROTC programs, or didn’t used to be before he started urging students to do more of this. It was a really helpful step in the process for my son.
