Army ROTC 2023-2024 3rd Board

Just noticed the banner message atop the portal has updated to the following:

"Board is currently ongoing, results have NOT been released. Results are expected to be released prior to 5 April 2024."

I'd still bet on Thursday, March 28, barring any more technical difficulties.

WestPoint did not pursue a waiver for peanut allergies for our son. At this point I feel that AROTC is also out of the question. I feel like his chances of getting into the Army are over....sigh.

Not necessarily. Someone else can correct me, but I believe the waiver authorities for West Point and AROTC are different. Also, part of the reasoning for not seeking a waiver at West Point could have been that they simply did not see his application as competitive relative to the competition. In other words, a peanut allergy may be waiverable; they just decided not to pursue said waiver in your son's case.

With AROTC the waiver process is totally different. If you are awarded a scholarship, you are AUTOMATICALLY considered for any needed waivers. So, do not give up hope until all hope is lost. Good luck!

Has your son been tested lately? I understand some children outgrow these allergies

My DS now shows Boarded/UC. As I mentioned previously he is a first time applicant just prior to this last board so I'm thinking they've made it through most if not all of the files at this point.

For this March board my son's status went from boarded under consideration and then to boarded and then back to boarded under consideration - does anyone know what this mean?

Just shuffling the deck most likely. If he entered the board as "boarded/under consideration" that means he was carried over from a previous board. So, they were probably just re-sorting him (and all the other carryover applicants) back in with all the new applicants being considered for the first time at this board.

For the other boards, and in the past, moving from B/UC to Boarded and then back to B/UC typically means you were selected for a scholarship (for many, not everyone). But since this is the last board, I'm not sure if that holds true. Maybe checking the 3rd board thread from last year will shed more light. Good luck to your son!

If a 3 year was awarded at the 2nd board any chance that can be moved to a 4year with the third board? Did they need to reapply?

This has been discussed at length. For everyone's reference, I'll attempt a brief explanation of how this is going to work:

1. At the conclusion of the March board, the 2023-24 scholarship application Order of Merit List (OML) is FINAL. Every single applicant is ranked from top to bottom based on their composite Whole Person Score.

2. There will be two "cutoff" lines on the final OML. Starting from the top, everyone from No. 1 to the first cutoff line will receive a 4-year scholarship. That will include some previous 3-year winners who will be upgraded, some new applicants who were just boarded this week for the first time, and possibly some carryover applicants who had not received any scholarship yet. It just depends on how many 4-year scholarships are available, and none of us know that number.

3. From the first cutoff line to the second cutoff line, everyone in that segment will receive a 3-year scholarship. Again, this list of names includes some applicants who have already been notified of a 3-year award in previous boards, carryover applicants who did not receive an award from previous boards, and new applicants who were just boarded this week. Again, how many people receive 3-year scholarships just depends on how many scholarships are available. No one knows that number.

4. Everyone below the second cutoff line gets nothing. Those applicants should reach out to the ROOs at their program of choice to inquire about campus-based scholarship opportunities. They can also seek a GRFD or Minuteman scholarship through the National Guard or Army Reserve.

Hope that helps makes sense of the process for everyone. Again, no one knows the total number of scholarships available this year. Historically, they've said it's about 1,000 4-Year Scholarships and about 2,000 3-Year Advanced Designee Scholarships. But who really knows for sure?

I'll also add that the Army does try to "steer" scholarships to programs around the country to achieve desired enrollment levels at each school. So, there is a chance that is also a factor in awards and may somewhat complicate the simple cutoff line formula. I've seen posts in the past where it's been said it's a computer algorithm that distributes scholarships where needed, but I honestly don't know what role school choice plays in the selection process, if it really plays a role at all.

Thank you - very helpful

Thank you. My fingers are sooo crossed right now. The waiting game is the worst, to only then have to wait for a waiver.

Amen! Then the flipping of status to those that have no clue how this works, ugh. Very much appreciate the experienced folks on this thread. Can't thank them enough for the insight. Fingers cross to everyone....for an entire week at least!

My DS status just changed tonight to Winner of a 4 year scholarship to his top choice school! In the 2nd board he declined the ECP scholarship hoping for a 3-year this time. So excited and saying prayers for everyone else to hear good news as well!

Whoa! Congratulations! That is terrific.

Of course when I saw this I raced to the computer to log into the portal and see if there was any change. Message still says March board results have NOT been released, and DS still shows his 3-year AD scholarship that he received in the January board. Like several others in this thread, still holding out hope for an upgrade before all the dust settles...
