Hello everyone.

I am currently a senior in high school and I will be graduating in about 2 months. I have just completed my PMS interview and entire application for an AROTC Scholarship for college. With that being said I have a few questions I was hoping someone could answer.

Firstly, I would like anyone's opinions on my chances of receiving the scholarship. I have listed my scores below.

1250 SAT

27 ACT

3.93 W 3.73 UW

46 push ups / 42 sit ups / 7:08 mile

Solid amount of volunteer experience and work experience with leadership positions at my work and while playing soccer.

I felt my interview went very well. My essays were all surrounding my future commitment and how dedicated I am to serve my country and hopefully pursue an entire career within the Army.

Also, I would probably be attempting to transfer my scholarship to a different college if I were to receive one. With all this being said would anyone please comment on the probability of me obtaining a scholarship based on my scores and how easily it would be to transfer to a different college.

the chances for scholarship are very random. I heard people with 4.0 GPA and 1560 SAT with leadership and athletic that don't get a scholarship and people with 1100 SAT and no EC that get a 4 year. I think you're on the right track but only time will tell.

DS had a 1260 on the SAT with a 4.0 GPA, similar PFT scores and a lot of leadership experience. He got a 3 year AROTC scholarship on the 2nd board. When you say you just had your interview I assume you mean you had it all done by last week for the board this week.

I’m guessing that the SAT score might not help your cause any, but if you are solid in all the other areas you have a decent chance. But I’m only a parent who reads a lot and is going through this for the first time too. The PMS interview is a huge unknown also. Good luck to you! Hope you get good news in the coming weeks.

Very true! I'm one of those people on the short end of the stick. 1510 SAT, 34 ACT, 4.0, high PT score 50-60 push and sits, multi-sport captain, musician, head life guarding job, single engine pilot, etc., etc., etc., and I didn't even get so much as a book allowance. I've said many, many times, no rhyme or reason, you have to be there at the right place at the right time and have a ton of luck, anything can happen, so if anyone has lower stats than I do, please apply! You DO have a chance to get it, every person is different and never give up. Good luck to all!!

Yep! I have a 1480 SAT, 3.9 unweighted and 4.7 weighted GPA, 13 APs with 10 fives. 13 years martial arts, varsity football, and more. I also have leadership with Key Club Executive Assistant, Marching Band Treasurer, and others. Boys State and other summer programs. However I haven't gotten a scholarship which is scares me but I'm hopeful for this board! ROTC is mysterious to me and hopefully I'm on their good side!

Standardized test scores, CFA, GPA, and ECs are only a few of the comparable measures.
These are a few other major considerations:
One doesn’t know the competition
How were the LORs written for you?
Were your essays stellar?
You may think your interview was a home run, but did your interviewer feel the same?
I believe these to be extremely important and too often overlooked when candidates are “chancing “ themselves. These give a much better true look and feel for a candidate than just a long list of scores and accolades.

There are many unknowns in the process, but I wouldn’t boil it all down to “luck” or lack of as to how the scholarships are awarded.

I think what you said about the interview is an excellent point. It is easy for people to mistake what their interviewers are thinking. In my experience, some of the best interviewers are the ones who hide their feelings. That is not to say you can't make a guess, just that it is certainly easy to make mistakes regarding how you did.

The AF says exactly what the weighting is and the interview is huge. So, I agree that the chancing based on resume is not that useful, but I'm interested that many of the 'resume' posts don't include the selected major. The AF, and everybody else are a little dodgy on how much that matters. DD has applied in a non-tech major. The only fact we find on these is that only about 20% of the awards are non-tech. ...but this means that 20% of the awards are non-tech. What we couldn't find was how do you get in that 20%? Even at her interview, she was told that she should consider changing her major, although I don't think you can change that after you have submitted everything.
How much does major weigh in selection?

Just like you said. 80% of awardees will be tech majors and 20% will not. You get in that group by being an otherwise outstanding candidate.
