Ask Us (current cadets) Anything

What is a LEAD applicant? I got a 2.81 highschool gpa and my college gpa is 3.0.

The LEAD program is for enlisted airmen who want to attend the academy. In essence, a slightly different application process, being that the applicant is already in the Air Force.

Is selection for summer jump or soaring random, or based on grades? Our 2019er wasn't selected for either.

Unless things have changed it is based on overall performance the first year (GPA, MPA and PEA)

USAFA10 is right as of last year, at least. They get to pick their top 3 choices. If they rank high enough on the BOM (Board order of Merit), then they get their top 1 or 2 choice.

But don't worry. They all have the opportunity to jump. If they don't get it in their rising 3deg year, they'll do it as Seniors.

My DD's surgeon said he never had the opportunity, so they interrupted his pilot training and brought him back to allow him to jump. If you want to jump, you can jump.

USAFA10 and USAFA83GradWife thank you for the answers. Sometimes our cadet doesn't want to answer my questions, I know there disappointment in not getting either of his top choices, but this year has been a learning experience for our whole family.

I know your son is disappointed if he didn't get soaring or jump. The thing that I discovered, from speaking to other parents, is that their cadet ended up enjoying the program they were assigned that summer. They all get to do soaring in their doolie year and they all (eventually) get to jump. But the ones that did Cyber, RPAs, etc. ended up experiencing something different. It's all a matter of perspective.

Would you recommend bringing razors or an electric razor for BCT?

Depends on whether the electric razor can give you a good enough shave. If so, then electric is substantially faster and easier. If not, you'll need to shave quickly or at night before you go to bed with a traditional razor.

Close... The BOM doesn't happen until the summer of your firstie year and is only used for AFSC and base assignments. It's your OPA that plays into the summer program algorithm executed by Mr. Fairman. They take your OPA standing, your program preference, and your leave period preference and do some magical computer work to match everyone up to the needs of USAFA. But yes - tell them to go talk to their ac advisor and put in a request for academic year AM-490. Those slots will fill up fast too, but I believe they are still first come-first serve.

I brought both. Ended up using the electric razor most of the time. I've found they are good enough at keeping a close shave if you stay on top of it. Still, its probably a good idea to have a regular razor on hand.

On tours I noticed many if not all cadets have monitors to hook their computers up to on their desks. Is this something that the cadet must buy or is this something issued? Need to bring own cords too hook it up too?

Wondering if I should pick one out for my parents to bring for parents weekend. Wondering the same thing about speakers

If you would like to have a monitor, you will have to purchase one yourself-they are not issued. You should get a docking station, but will have to provide a monitor/cords if you want.

What does this docking station do? Like charges it? Connects it to speakers?

It pretty much just charges it. And you guys probably aren't getting the same model we did so it might not even have the disconnecting tablet/screen.

2019's issued docking station has:
-3 x USB port
-Ports for charging, mic, headphones
-HDMI and projector plugs
...as well as a place to attach the computer lock, something that really comes in handy especially as a C4C. :D
