Automatic Hijack Thread

I kinda agree with the Commish. Its crazy nuts out there. Older son is one of those deluded Cubs fans like his Father. Poor things think that curse will be lifted in their lifetime. They have tickets for Chicago both in May & August. Dug Out seats both times... Ka-ching Ka-ching. I want to kill them but oh well.... Maybe later.

Our nearest league is the Augusta Green Jackets. Note to JAM - they are an affiliate of the Red Sox. They've got an interesting history.

Well my love of the Red Sox is genetic - can't do anything about it. From April to October of every year is an emotional roller coaster -
Now, Jamzmom, if the Sox broke their curse then the Cubbies are right around the corner.

I do agree with the Commissioner, as well. I honestly have only ever been to one major league game - that was at Fenway - many years ago, I have no idea who they played against and my view was blocked by a pole. Ther is no loyalty to your team anymore - they all go where the money is. Those that are loyal get dumped on and traded.
We have a fabulous AA club nearby. Those games are a blast, the food and tickets are cheap and the baseball is fun to watch.
The players actually autograph baseballs, gloves etc and smile while they are doing it! We have seen many future major leaguers move through here.

My love of baseball is no longer returned at major league ballparks. I much prefer watching the game from the friendly confines of Triple A minor league parks in such places as Des Moines, Indianapolis, Louisville, Toledo, New Orleans, etc. I can get an inexpensive seat close enough to the field to hear the umpire talking to the catcher. I have yet to see or hear obnoxious drunks fighting like I experienced every time I attended a Phillies home game. Yes, I don't get to watch pitchers throwing bullets or hitters launching monster shots like in the major leagues, but the game seems purer at the Triple A level. To me, it's close to the major league baseball I remember from my youth.

I agree with this too. I really enjoy going to the Tacoma Rainiers games where I can get a seat behind home plate for $9. The park is smaller, the people are friendly, and the players are more accessible. I'm still a Seattle Mariners fan but don't go to games very often.

the Cubbies are cursed? they are supposed to win? just wait til pryor gets back....in 08 :{ oh yeah-- billy buck was a cub before leading the bosox to the ws loss. go bears

You guys are too cynical and jaded. All baseball is good.

My favorite is Florida spring training. Golf course at daylight. First on the course. 18 holes in 3 hrs. Ball park when it opens. More golf or night game. Get up the following days and do it all again.

I think this was the last year for Dodgertown. Absolutely unbelievable. All levels. Golf course. Players either have to walk through the stands or walk all the way to the outfield to get to the field. No dugouts. Just an aluminum bench seperated from the stands by a 3' chain link fence. And they all do sign autographs. One day sitting before the game watching Tommy Lasorda hold court with a young catcher who had screwed up and George Brett sits down beside me and we talk for a half hour.

Road trips. Last year Nationals, Phillies, Pittsburg, Cleveland, Phillies again, and Baltimore all in a long weekend with my son. Cleveland has a beautiful ball park. And cheap. Buy GA tickets and get there when it opens. Beer garden in center field. $7 ticket and $5 nursed beer all game and one of the best seats in the house.

All time great road trip which I wish I could have gone on. My son played for Navy. After graduation all the seniors rented a van and saw all 30 teams in about 2 weeks. The stars and moon did one of their rare alignments and it was all East coast doable. They ended the trip in Iowa breaking into the Field of Dreams at daylight and having a full blown game.

There is a difference between 3_A and the majors. More strategy. Better pitching and hitting. A little crisper fielding and throwing. And what irritates me about 3-A is that they are a holding tank for the majors and team chemistry is very difficult.

For USNA, Baltimore has a scalp-free zone right off Eutaw Street. No more than face value for tickets. Sellers are usually corporate box seat holders. About 5 minutes before game time, great deals and super seats.

Tonite if I get out of school early I will be watching the Orioles and Sox. Three games in DC this weekend (and 7 tee times including USNA course). Go Mets.

And I refuse to watch baseball on TV. Only radio or in the stands.

A guy and his dog go into a barroom. The bartender says, "Hey, get that dog out of here... we don't allow dogs in here."
Wait a minute, the guy says, "This is no ordinary dog ! This is 'Plato' the talking dog !"
"Yeah, sure" says the bartender.
I'll prove it to you," says the guy. "Plato... what's on top of a building?"
"ROOF !" says the dog.
"Look," says the bartender, "just how dumb do you think I am?"
"Wait a minute," says the guy. "Plato, how does sandpaper feel?"
"RUFF !" says the dog.
"Do I have 'stupid' tattooed across my forehead or something," says the bartender. "Now get that dog out of here! "
"Wait.. I'm not through", says the guy. "Plato, who was the greatest baseball player of all time?"
"RUTH !" says the dog.
"That does it !! " says the bartender, and he throws them both out on the street.
Outside, the dog looks at his owner and says, "Do you think I should have gone with DiMaggio?"

I have not been able to stop laughing at this picture since I first saw it earlier this week:

Rock on, Boromir!

As the mother of 2 teens and 2 twentysomethings - I have no pride. I no longer have a problem admitting my ignorance (it is usually pointed out to me everyday!)

So what the heck is that picutre? ^^^^^^^ and why is it funny?
Who is Boromir?

Uh - Okay My ignorance is really showing on this one - haha. - Knew I should have asked the kids.

They have read all the books and of course seen the movies - in fact we have them all on dvd. Not me though - obviously! :shake:

Yep and proud of it! The ability to tolerate mood swings is a requirement to be a part of the Red Sox Nation- :shake:
I go from obnoxious when they are winning - to nearly suicidal when they are losing.

Oh yea and .....they are beating the Yankees again tonight...

omfg guys did anyone aside frome me watch that awesome ranger game? double overtime, best game in years

Missed that one Chip but sounds like it was great game. I love 'em when they're close. It was sad news about the Card's Josh Hancock being killed yesterday. He played for the Augusta Green Jackets before going pro. He played for the Sox as well. One more week & I get rid of the hubby to Chicago to see his cursed Cubs play. I'm doing the happy dance cause this means I have three whole days to sit in the middle of the bed, watch what I wanna watch and eat Cheerios for dinner. GLORY DAYS!

Sounds like me during hunting season, except I would be having popcorn for dinner instead of cheerios! :thumb:

DC Area Golf

Mets/Nationals all weekend. DIL had grad school classes so just me and the son.

Annapolis-area golf: Andrews AFB (typical AFB, build the O'Club and golf courses and then, if there is any money left, build the hangars and runways) has three very nice golf courses. The West Course if probably the original followed by East and then South. South is more modern with a lot of sand and narrow fairways. Not much water on any of them. West is flat and wide. A lot of pars. East is newer, a little more narrow, and more rolling. All three well maintained courses. One needs a PIN which a midn can get via email and then is eligible for online tee times. Except for the Academy course, probably the nicest military courses in the area.

Go Mets.

69, have you ever played the Grove Park Resort in Asheville? I've heard lots about the Inn but don't know anyone who's played the course to comment on it.

WAMom! Yep, you know exactly what I'm talkin' bout. Popcorn is for dessert in the bath tub in 10 feet of bubbles, 1/2 bottle of wine then watching every girlie movie you can lay your hands on at Blockbuster! HEAVEN!

After the tub you gotta break out the ice cream. Gotta have my very own pint of Ben & Jerry's - yep Chunky Monkey!
The movie? I usually start wtih "When Harry Met Sally" - I have never met a male who could sit through the whole thing! If I am feeling really nostalgic then and Hepburn/Tracy flick will do.
