Automatic Hijack Thread

Zaph, Id continue our little debate here, but sadly it ran its course. we know how eachother feels and arent going to change it.

Speaking of liberals... I am liberal in the sense that I believe in a living constitution. One whose guidelines change with the times. Not to mention the addition of clauses by our founding fathers that gave it its flexibility. If that werent the case we wouldnt have the U.S. Air Force now would we? Shades of gray people shades of gray.

I am liberal in the sense that I believe in a living constitution.

Next time you're playing football and winning, see how you feel when the other team suddenly changes the rules so they can win. That's what you get with "living" rules.

Yes, the Constitution can be amended, but never, EVER, should an amendment be permitted to restrict that which was already there, nor to impose that which should be addressed by regular law (remember prohibition?).

The Founders were far smarter than any of us. What they created has survived 220+ years and led to the greatest nation in the history of mankind. Let's not delude ourselves into thinking we're smarter than they were.

Also, the U.S. Air Force's creation had zero to do with the Constitution. It was created by an act of Congress, done under the guidelines and power structure defined in the Constitution. Don't confuse the two.

Shades of gray people shades of gray.

When it comes to our rights as citizens, and to the survival of the United States as defined by the Constitution, I do not see gray. I see digital black and white. I don't apologize for it, either.

Actually, the creation of the air force is a direct result of the elastic clause.

To make all Laws which shall be necessary and proper for carrying into Execution the foregoing Powers, and all other Powers vested by this Constitution in the Government of the United States, or in any Department or Officer thereof.

In its original text it stated congress shall have the power to raise an Army and Navy. There is no way when writing the document they could have forseen the advent of aerial warfare. When it comes to the "survival of the United States" Id say the U.S. Air Force plays quite a big role. In your black and white view of what is written the constitution wouldnt allow for the creation of the Air Force in 1946. According to you the survival of the nation would fall soley on the shoulders of the Army and Navy/Marine Corps.

Dude, read what you quoted and then tell me how a black-and-white reading of it prevents the formation of the U.S. Air Force.

Good grief.

It's precisely that kind of line that made the States and Founders demand a Bill of Rights, so that the .gov couldn't come along and trample on the rights of the people in the name of "necessary and proper for carrying into Execution the foregoing Powers, and all other Powers vested by this Constitution in the Government of the United States, or in any Department or Officer thereof."

Not that it stopped them, of course. Remember the Supreme Court recently overturning a stupid federal "no guns in schools" law that had somehow been passed under the guise of "interstate commerce"?

no no, no, no no no!!! The elastic clause is what allows for the creation of additional federal agencies to suit the nations need. If our founding fathers had adopted your black and white interpretation there would be no AF. This all or nothing stance doesnt work in law.

anyway

....what kind of deodorant do you guys prefer? Doesnt "Army Strong" sound like it could a brand lol

But the elastic clause is IN the Constitution. I'm not following your point.

The woops are gonna burn you in effigy for that one! :thumb:

Taking a Road Trip -

Any suggestions for traveling through Knoxville or Nashville TN?
How about Huntsville AL - isn't there some kind of Space Museum there? Anyone been there? Is it worth going to?

How about passing through Atlanta?

Whaaaaaaatttttttt?!?!?!

I thought, and for the sake of argument still think on occasion (depending on the argument), that I'm at least a bit liberal. But I most definately don't believe in a living constitution, with the exception of a few but very important ammendments. Perhaps that's the difference between "liberal" and "libertarian".

As they say, "don't @#$% with the Constitution!"

Agreed.

It's very well-written as-is.

Now, if people (especially the clowns in power) would just bother to actually READ the damned thing....

Just_a_Mom,

Atlanta has an aquarium that rivals the ones in Chicago and Chattanooga. Also the High Museum is worth seeing, but you may need tickets if there is a popular show. If you like more outdoorsy things, the Atlanta Braves may be in town or you could visit Kennesaw Mountain, the site of a major Civil War battle. It is a National Park and is north of Atlanta. Then there is Zoo Atlanta and the Cyclorama right next door. The Cyclorama is one of the few surviving paintings in the round that toured after the Civil War. It depicts the Battle of Atlanta complete with sound and story. There is a Civil War museum in the same building. Lots to do in Atlanta!

More in Atlanta...

Add several other attractions:

Stone Mountain is a big park with lots to do. It is the largest piece of granite in the US, and you can hike to the top if you like, then see the laser show after dark.

The World of Coca Cola just opened their new facility adjacent to the Aquarium (the largest in the US and the only one to have whale sharks on exhibit). Look at fun memorabilia, and spend as much time as you like in the tasting room trying coke products from around the world. Centenial Olympic Park is located across the street, and is a fun place for kids to cool off in the fountains.

Atlantic Station is close to the above and is a great mix of restaurants, shops and entertainment!

Thank you ladies (thought my request was lost in the hi-jacking!!)

The Aquarium - as good as the one in Baltimore?
I would like to see Centennial Park - I think we will only be in town for one night if we go that way.
will definitely check out Stone Mtn and Kennesaw Mtn - sounds pretty cool!

"The woops are gonna burn you in effigy for that one!" Not if it prevents that nasty "squiddy" odor.
:lolatyou:

Justamom, do the world of coke for sure & try some of the "flavors" from different countries. Come back & tell us how your eyes watered up. Wow there are some unusual "flavors". Really neat place. Do Underground Atlanta while there. Lots of fun. Stone Mountain is way cool. I've hiked it. I thought I was going to DIE! Take the sky lift. LOL Everyone hit on my picks. The musuem of High art, Cyclorama, ect. It really is the best of the best list. When I lived in Kennesaw, there was a law on the books that all residents shall own atleast one gun. It was from the 1800's & never changed. Could have changed by now but I found it to be comical as all get out when I was there. I was breakin' the law. LOL

Breakin' Kennesaw's gun law? Not a laughing matter.

I would have been breaking the law too - not only have I never owned a gun but I have never even held a gun much less shot one.

I don't know how I missed this thread for so long. I'm up to page 5 and can't wait for a way to hijack the thread.:shake:

I watched Annapolis last evening with my younger son. What struck me most was how nice the cadre were to those new plebes. Is it really that relaxed at the naval academy (he asks, tongue in cheek)? Those cadre were almost sweet!

And those midshipmen really should wear headgear when boxing; it will help prevent them from loosing all that information they tried so hard to acquire throughout the academic year.

And that boxer fellow; I think he would have been kicked out of any other academy about six different times for any number of things he said or did. They sure are understanding there at Annapolis.

heh heh heh.....
