Branch Assignments

DS is hoping to do ranger school after bolc, is that possible?

Yes, but FA receives only a few slots per class. He'll be able to complete for a chance while he's in BOLC as long as he's doing well academically.

Amen to that Jcleppe .... Between DS#1 going to Captain Career Course at Ft Benning and DS # 3 going to IBOLC , looks like more vacation trips to as my wife calls it, our summer home, Columbus, GA. are in our future.

DS will be doing IBOLC at Ft Bennington. Suggestions for places to visit- vacation spots in the area for future planning?
DS got his 1st choice Infanty. He was top 10%.

My husband and I are holding on tight for this ride.

If you head to Ft. Benning while he's there and have some time, take a side trip to Savannah GA, it's a great city on the coast and full of history. There are a lot of nice places to visit in the area, Eufaula AL. is a great old southern town with some great old homes. Just try and avoid being there in the heat of the summer.

We usually stay at the Hyatt Place North Columbus or our new favorite ... the Hampton Inn & Suites by the National Infantry Museum (they do a great job for Military Families, although due to their proximity to base, they fill up quick)
Places to go ... Downtown Columbus is a nice place to visit, lots of new restaurants and bars. Kayaking/rafting down the river that goes through town looks fun.

Edit Ft Benning! Just realized this had a mind of its own

Enjoy the brief time with him before he reports. With his high OML, he will probably get an early IBOLC slot, maybe a June 2017 start. You won't know for a few months.

Your choice of Columbus hotels may be influenced by where he lives while at IBOLC. Our son liked his furnished apartment at Independence Place, which he shared with a roommate. (I liked it too while he and his roomie were away at Ranger School). There's a Microtel nearby but it's no more than adequate.

The missus and I enjoyed a side trip to the Jimmy Carter National Historic Site in Plains, Georgia, about an hour away, a mite longer if you get snared in the speed trap halfway there (we didn't). We never got around to visiting the historic sites at the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama, but we'll get another chance when he gets sent to a Ft. Benning(ton) school this spring. Oh, one more diversion - there's a golf course on post, complete with driving range. Just don't park in the row marked for General Officers, unless of course you are one.

Thank you so much! DS said he has things he has to d/w us in a couple days when he's home for break. Any thoughts on having a car at IBOLC? We're about a 13hr drive from Ft Benning and we're pretty sure DS wants the wheels...

Can anyone tell me what it will be like for my son at AG-BOLC at Ft. Jackson? ie, rooms, what a basic day is like, free time/days off, anything that comes to mind. Thanks.

A car will be essential for his sanity if he lives on base and for his survival if he lives off base.

Look into picking up a car on lease. Are websites which facilitate. Everything is on the up and up through the Leasing Co.

DS picked one up MN after commissioning. Drove the heck out of it before and during BOLC. Dropped it off at the Ford dealership in Augusta, GA one week before heading to duty station overseas. There were 6 mos. left on the lease. No sales tax, no licensing, no penalty.

Even if your DS keeps the car to lease termination it is a cheap way to go. Often time the lessor will pay an incentive to take the lease over. Besides they other things to think about than rocking a fly sled.
