Class of 2016 Appointments

Once you class of 2016ers accept your appointments, do your moms a favor and direct them to West Point Moms on facebook. This support group has been around for 3.5 years, and it's a great place to find moms who have "been there, done that."

Appointment Offered Today!!!

I just received news that I've been offered an appointment to West Point. How long does a candidate have before he must accept/decline the offer?

I still have an interview with one remaining MOC (already did the two Senator's interviews).

Thanks.

Two years ago my son got his appointment in late December, but did not officially notify USMA until around April 16. In early April, he received a nicely worded letter from USMA that basically said, come on already make up your mind.

I would read the correspondence they sent to you, to see if they want a decision before May. Probably not, but double check to be sure.

Also, if you received an appointment you probably do not need to go to that last MOC interview. Congrats!

Another data point:

If you do get an appointment, get your various tasks completed. (Grey card, security, police reports, etc)

I know of one letter from admissions this spring to an appointee indicating that they would start withdrawing appointment offers for those with certain items incomplete.

In that letter was a scolding that the offer was made in November, that waiting so long to complete the to-do's implied they were not serious about USMA and the appointment maybe should go to a more serious candidate?

Don't you know that built a fire under that appointee!

Realistically, if you have an LOA or appointment you should schedule an overnight visit if you are uncertain. Waiting longer without that additional information will not make the decision quality better.

And I'm going to say it, harsh as it sounds: If you are waiting for a better offer from a civvy school, then that tells me you probably are not committed enough to thrive at a service academy.

Not that you can't get through it, but that you are not sure about your career, etc. And need to address that.

You need a plan B. And probably even C. It's good to have option. But if the delay is due to considering better offers you need to invest some time/$ and make a decision about USMA.

Cadet89, I realize that we probably over answered (hammered!) your simple question.

You do have until May officially, but probably want to plan for earlier than that.

Ultimately people make decisions on R-day, and during Beast. Not many, but they do. There are also injuries just before and during Beast. Most appear to head on to civvy schools.

So plan B thinking also becomes a factor. For DS, the local big name state school became his plan B, as he could make it work without paying dorm deposit. IE: he could commute in a jam if he could not get a dorm in time.

You can also drop without commitment until your junior year. Not many do so, but some do. They can also proceed to civvy schools and do well it appears.

But all that said, you really want to make the decision about careers, then about schools.

As one general told some appointees just before heading to USMA.... "You have chosen one of the hardest ways to get a college degree that exists". Point being- while you get a degree at USMA, that's not the sole focus.

There are probably easier ways even to become an officer. Some would argue as good or even better. (Old ROTC vs svc academy debate).

Darn, I've over answered again!!

7th Semester transcript

And pay close attention to the acceptance packet and ensure you send in your 7th Semester transcript. That always seems to catch folks by surprise when they get a nasty-gram email in March or April to the effect of "we need that transcript by this Friday or we pull your appointment."

As a parent of a DS with an appointment in hand from USMA and an LOA from USNA, I could not disagree more. Admissions determinations from colleges and universities with regular decision programs (not rolling) are not known until April 1, 2012. That can be a critical data point especially if you are considering ROTC at a civilian college. To be honest I didn't pay close attention to the letter that accompanied the appointment folder, but if there was a response deadline it was May 1. That is consistent with the deadline for colleges that do not have rolling admissions. I hope that my DS takes all the time he needs and waits until he has all of the data points. I don't want him to be years down the road and wonder, "what if?" There are, after all, no bad choices.

I'm not sure you understood my point, but I see your DS has had an overnight at USMA, so he at least should have info to make his decision.

The two paths are very different, even with ROTC award at 1st choice.

Good luck, and let us know where he ends up! :thumb:

After discussions with my family and thinking about where I want to be in 5-10 years as an officer, I've decided to accept my appointment to the USMA. I was also an applicant to the AFA and had listed the AFA as my number one choice back in July (mainly because I'm an AF brat). But after attending the summer seminars at both, I think WP and the Army is the better fit.:thumb:
Now I'll wait on the acceptance letter since it's only been 2 days since I noticed the "Offered Appointment" notice on my candidate portal.
The only question I have now is "What to do about my scheduled MOC interview next Friday?"

I'm am somewhat new at this, so please forgive my ignorance, but can a Senator offer an appointment to USMA? I understand that they can and do offer a nomination, even a primary, but doesn't an offer of appointment have to come from the Academy?

The Academy will give the congressman who nominated a candidate a week or so to call them and give them the news of their appointment before they send out the appointment. Some congressmen take advantage of this and sometimes candidates don't know of their appointment until they recieve it in the mail.

LiveGold is correct and I thank you for the clarification. I was called on Nov. 8th and told I was the Priniciple Nominee. I received a letter indicating I was fully qualified by USMA on Oct. 28th. USMA Admissions met a week after I received the call from the Senator on Tues., Nov. 15th and then they notified the Senator's office that I was offered an appointment to Class of 2016. That was how it happened!

Just some info. I spoke to people at the admission office, as of now 60 candidates have accepted their appointments.

USMA 2016:

Congratulations! and thanks for the clarification. As I said, I am new to all of this and learning the ropes of the process is quite an undertaking. I think it is fantastic that the Senator's office took the time to contact you personally and it speaks volumes of the importance of such an appointment.

Again, congratulations and best wishes as you embark on a fantastic and awesome journey in life.
