Class of 2016-Mailbox Stalkers Club

Wow it kinda scares me that all of you dedicated people got TWEs! I'm still waiting believe it or not. Hope you all get Prep or Falcon Scholarships (myself included in anticipation of rejection)! Meanwhile, I'm moving on with plan c.

u guys are lucky to have AFROTC to fall back on. I wasn't fortunate enough to get an AFROTC scholarship. I have to make the big decision of going to college on my AROTC scholarship or staying home to go to my local college which udoesn't offer ROTC. I have always wanted to go into the air force, but i dont think i could pass up the opportunity to serve in the worlds best army. Could anyone direct me to a list of paths I could take to be an AF officer other than ROTC. I know i could do OTS/OCS, but is there anything else i could do during college.I know they navy offers opportunities like this.

There are three sources of commissioning (USAFA, ROTC, OTS). Check your local school to see if they have a crosstown agreement with another AFROTC detachment. OTS typically is the hardest to get into unless you have a technical degree that the AF is looking for. You can also join ROTC without a scholarship if that is an option for you. I have known people who were in AFROTC and cross commissioned to the Army. If money is an issue you may want to talk to a AF Reserve recruiter. Many reservist start off in a unit and grow into a commission after they finish college. You have tons of options if you ask the right questions.

Is there a different process / set of requirements for kids in college vs high school for applying?

The process is the same regarding opening another file, securing a nomination, etc. The difference is how candidates are looked at. USAFA wants to see college students taking a challenging schedule of classes that mirror those of the Academy. Do well in those classes and continue to find service and leadership opportunities. Insider could probably chime in and explain the difference in greater detail.

The process this year wasn't very different from my experience the year before when I applied. The main differences were 1) I used my college chemistry professor for an academic recommendation, 2) I was eligible for and received an ROTC nomination 3) I wasn't focused on turning in my application early because I knew my file wouldn't go before the board until my first semester transcript was in. So basically, the difference you have a lot of time to make sure your application is prime. More time to make sure your grades are great and your CFA is maxed (or at least above the averages), as well as EC's or collegiate sports.

It is all about timing! As an AF pilot wife, I have 22+ years of the highs and lows of the AF! Watching my husband work hard in ROTC to earn one of the few (5) pilot slots given because of cut backs, to the grueling year of UPT where he was very disappointed that there was only 1 fighter in the drop ( he graduated #2), and only 8 were given planes while the rest were "banked and waiting" - base closures, planes being transferred, programs being phased out... I can say that it has been quite a roller coaster ride for him. There have been pilot cutbacks, shortages, options to get out early, and NONE of it has been in his control. He has rode the wave and had a very successful career (reserve pilot retiring Aug and moved on to his airline job 8 yrs ago @ SWA) but I can say there have been many speed bumps along the way.

When my DS received the TWE yesterday, my husband said... "welcome to the AF" My DS looked at him strangely not understanding what he meant but dad explained that things in his career have not really gone as planned along the way. This admissions cycle is just another example of our experience with the AF, it is all about the timing. I believe that a few years ago many of these candidates who received the dreaded TWE would have recieved an appointment. My son summer seminar cadet said he did 1 pull-up on his CFA and his grades were nowhere nearly as high as my son. TIMING!

DS is still deciding between Navy or AF ROTC but either way he will succeed and reach his goal. Who knows, these cutbacks we are seeing right now may in the long run be beneficial in your military career, less officers, more opportunities down the road?....

You describe the 89-92 year group well. I had a pilot slot in ROTC and then a missile slot and then an intel slot. Five years after commissioning I was being asked to go to pilot training (a dream I had long abandoned). Then once I started to really advance as an airlifter (C-130) I was pushed to a UAV. Then back to the C-130 then staff. I never lived where I wanted, never got my first choice, was gone from home too much, lived in too many tents, missed too many holidays, birthdays, anniversaries, and ate way too many MREs. However, this summer I'll hang up my uniform, send my DS off to college somewhere and thank God for blessing me and my family beyond my imagination.

I got my TWE today. I put it in a frame over my bed to motivate me to have a stronger application the 2nd time around.

Great minds think alike, Knittle. I have mine hanging over my computer desk. Sorry to hear about the news. I look forward to reapplying with you next year. You're a great guy.

So are many others! Keep the faith! :guns6:

(I just really like that emoticon...)

You sound like a marksman (woman in your case?). Are you on a shooting team at NMMI at all, or do they even have shooting teams there? I love me a good trip to the range with a rifle and distance targets.

Grueling Process

DS initially received appointment (22 Mar) and it is now a conditional appointment (medical) based on the questions he answered when accepting the appointment. As the churning of this process continues we all do not know what has transpired since 22 Mar as far as folks in DSs position and those appointments that have not been accepted.

I know that it is hard for all those still waiting, but hopefully you will receive good news after 15 Apr.

ArapWarrior: I couldn't help but notice the mascot! My daughter graduated from Arapahoe High School last year and is currently a C4C at USAFA! Good luck to you!

Oh! And I recognize your username, hopefully I'll see her next year. We'll see...

Another great story about an outstanding Army ROTC cadet who is making a difference. She attends a state university (University of Kansas) - a great school!

With the God-given talents and abilities you've been given, and the doors that are open to you, I know each one of you will all find a way to make a difference too, regardless of how you get your commission or where you go to college.

Please don't ever give up!

Haha guess I'm not alone! Good to know. Good luck to everyone else still waiting!

Do you think that the wave of TWE's that came last/this week have all been sent out?

Hard to say. The still have Prep, Falcon, and LEAD Appointments to go yet. Insider might be able to address this without breaking protocol.

Any BFEs going out with those???

Not yet. There will be some more appointments (or at least we hope so). As most have guessed, USAFA is waiting to see how many of the offers already made decline those offers.

Hang in there folks... this is a tough year but we'll all get through it. We expect next year to be better.

For those that don't make it this year and believe they may reapply, send me a PM. I'll do what I can to point you in the right direction for next year.
