Where might one procure a copy of Bearings so one can be better prepared for I-Day? I've looked all over the www but can't seem to find a copy. Thanks!

Don't be that guy. If you memorize materials ahead of INDOC, your classmates will resent you and your cadre will make you pay. Your time is better spent working out and enjoying your last taste of freedom.

Copy that. Definitely don't want to be that guy. Will heed your advice. Thank you

Not necessarily true. It's tough to memorize stuff standing up, with your hand up at a 90 degree angle. (they don't do that anymore, I think, but they did in my day). memorizing some stuff would make it easier. You're A LOT more likely to get in trouble for not knowing stuff than knowing too much. I have firsthand experience. I got in trouble usually for not knowing anything.

easy place to start would be the phonetic alphabet, the supe's name, the 10 general orders, the 11 (or however many) leadership principles, core values (respect, honor, service), Basic responses (yes sir, no sir, no excuse sir, i do not know sir). Learn how to square corners and practice holding front leaning rest for as long as you can.

This is a lot of stuff done during indoc. I know that because I WAS a squad leader (cadre) recently. Whatever happens, just know that 90% of the stuff we say has non value is meant to mess with your head and make you mentally tough.

That said, dont be eager to volunteer your knowledge. I would say in the beginning answer half the questions wrong and then get more accurate.

It is tough looking at the list and not seeing anyone from my state reporting and knowing I'm still on hold:blowup:

To Mr2020, your suggested dishonesty reflects poorly on Kings Point. To those plebe candidates and their parents who are reading his posts, please know that what Mr2020 is recommending violates the honor code at USMMA.

Actually, I worked indoc last year, did train the trainer and worked with the Drill Sergeants a lot, so I know how indoc works, thanks. And withholding information IS NOT against the USMMA honor code. GIVING false or misleading information, however, is against the honor code. That's why at mast or any review board, the mid is not required to answer questions or otherwise incriminate himself. Even under the UCMJ an accused person has no obligation to testify against himself, it's constitutionally protected.

The USMMA Honor Code states that a midshipman "Shall not lie, cheat, or steal". Do you not think that knowing the SOC ahead of time is cheating?

Back to the original question from TallShipSailor about getting a copy of Bearings so one can be better prepared for I-Day. I thought about that myself around Christmas thinking it would help my DS and be a great gift. We are conditioned to believe that thinking and planning ahead is a positive trait and show time management. When I researched this same question on this Forum I was surprised by the response of not wanting to be "that guy" and how your classmates will resent you and your cadre will make you pay. Therefore, I never acquired my DS a copy, but certainly didn't think it would have been cheating. I thought of it preparing as you go getting tutoring and taking advance classes for Physics and Calculus or training for the CFA. Also I thought about the training high school ROTC candidates had that might give them an advantage over their classmates. But taking the advice of those of you with much more experience with USMMA I didn't pursue in acquiring a copy for my DS. And I understand it is a bonding experience with your classmates and you don't want to make others look bad. Recall that movie, "Tribes"
. Where the Iron-willed drill instructor Drakeis faced with a difficult task: breaking hardened hippie Adrian ("that guy") who also is a also a skilled marine recruit who excels at every stage of basic training. Just saying the intention is good in wanting to be prepared. Interesting enough when I asked my DS about it he said he didn't want it. He wanted to go through Indoc without having the "Bearing" knowledge before hand and have the same experience as his classmates.

You are exactly right. I think if you learn some stuff before hand you should just use it to stay under the radar. It's VERY HARD to memorize info in the indoc environment. And the DI's give you such a hard time if you don't memorize this stuff. Almost made me quit during my indoc. It's a lot easier now than it was in my day. But if I could have learned something to keep me away from wanting to quit everyday I would have.
