Hello,
If I apply to Virginia Tech with an admission's fee waiver, does this bind me to Virginia Tech or just bind me to the Corps of Cadets if I choose to go to Virginia Tech? The waiver says that, "I have indicated that I will join the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets if offered admission," and I am unsure if using this fee waiver would prohibit me from going to a different school. The language seems to indicate that acceptance into Virginia Tech would bind me to go there. I will enroll in NROTC with or without a scholarship at whatever school I go to, but if I were to gain acceptance into another school, I would like to be able to choose which school to go to and not be bound to one school simply because of a fee waiver.

As I recall from a visit with DS almost a decade ago now, you can attend another school and are not bound to VT. They DO take a pledge to enter the Corps as part of their admissions decisions, and if you go there you are expected to keep that pledge. If you do not, then if you voluntarily drop from the Corps, they have the right to disenroll you from the college. There might be a time limit on that, like you can't drop freshman year or something. Anyway that's my (fairly old) understanding. You can always confirm it with VT.

I have a first-year cadet at VT and from what I understand, the fee waiver is not binding in any way. If you apply to VT and indicate that you will join the Corps, then yes, you must join the Corps IF you decide to attend VT. If you decide to drop the Corps within the first 6 weeks of school, you must drop out of VT for the remainder of the first semester, but you can re-enroll as a regular student in the spring without having to go through the entire application process again.
