Current Plebe - Ask Away!

Very good question. I am not sure what the liberty rules are on that. I've always wondered!

We're 40 minutes away, and my parents (son's grandparents) live in Annapolis.

Not that he would want to see us ;), but his 3-year old little bro would like to see him if he gets in!

Adding on the @fullspeedahead post:

Leave = overnight(s) stay off the Yard
Liberty= a fixed amount of time away from the yard but not overnight

Each class year earns more liberty and leave. Plebes earn "town liberty" on Saturdays only from noon til midnight(?) unless there are home FB games or other military obligations i.e. watch duty. They can request 1 overnight leave per semester that may or may not be granted. Sundays they are granted "Yard Liberty" which pretty much means they have free time but cannot leave the Yard unless of course they have other military obligations i.e. watch duty. So it is possible for family/friends to visit the Plebe on the Yard on Sunday.

Of course at any time leave or liberty can be rescinded or reduced based on disciplinary actions or COVID restrictions.

My DGD is also doing CVW this week. She just received her appointment and this visit will be a big decision factor as she also has a 4 yr NROTC scholarship that she is considering.
We are here right now. He is doing the cvw. I am doing sight seeing again and seeing old friends ;). Everyone happy

@LT360 May I assist?

There is a real military distinction between leave and liberty and is defined in all service policies. Sometimes it takes awhile for accurate language and understanding the distinctions to soak into new military members.

Liberty can be overnight. A weekend with overnights away from the Hall is liberty.

At USNA, leave is usually >96 hours away from the place of duty, including overnights. That means: Thanksgiving, winter, spring, summer leave, intersessional leave. Emergency leave can be any period of time. The member is not required to be in uniform and enjoys other select releases from military obligations and MidRegs. A 21 year old plebe can enjoy a beer on leave, but not on liberty, even overnight. The member is still subject to 24/7 UCMJ. Men can grow a beard and not cut their hair kind of stuff. Plebes cannot drive on liberty; they can on leave. DH always grew a beard when we were on leave between duty stations; then he stopped when the color seemed to have gone somewhere.

See USNA Midshipmen Regulations, page Page 1-12, for the discussion on liberty, which addresses Yard, town, overnight and weekend liberty.

I think this is the most recent edition. The differentiation won’t change.

Not sure if this is accurate. The following, in addition to special leave circumstances (e.g., bereavement/funeral), are leave periods. Otherwise, I believe town liberty, with or without granted overnights (either by class, supe/dant list, bets, etc) ,is considered liberty.

  • Thanksgiving leave
  • End-of-semester leave
  • Mid-term leave during spring semester
  • A short liberty period at the end of spring semester and before Commissioning Week
  • Three weeks of summer vacation

Hello!

Quick question, at USNA do you have to stand watch? I know at KP you do so I was just wondering about that

My 3/C is standing watch tonight. Lots of balancing acts required at this leadership school.

Sometimes you know ahead of time about watch sometimes you do not. DS stood his watch, which he was filling in for his roommate, but then his relief did not show and then his relief's relief was late. He was not happy but adjusted. His squad leader also took note and I do not think this has happened again.

Having grown up with the military, and serving both in an enlisted capacity in the Army and as a NAPSter (and Plebe for a short stint), I'm very familiar with the nuances of leave vs. liberty. I was more asking what the parameters for liberty were for those with family close by. ;)

Town liberty - can leave Yard and visit nearby family home, sponsor, whatever.

Yard liberty - mid can have visitors on Yard.

Of course, there are all kinds of ways to abuse this.

You mean like having yard libs, taking a sailboat out (allowed during yard libs) and meeting friends out on the water for whatever
or even sailing to a friend or sponsor's house for lunch. . . :zip:
Wow never thought about that aspect....will have to ask DS....or maybe better not to ask. Dont ask Dont tell right?

Better to not ask. Mid stuff is mid stuff. Most grads have done/seen far more than we'll ever let on. I do
know a couple that my son got away with that left me scratching my head a bit and this too is part of the pleasant
memories that we have.
I've mentioned before on the SAF that when a good friend became a 1 star admiral, he found himself in a meeting
with a 4 star admiral who remembered him well from when a younger version of the 4 star had awarded a Black N
to the 1 star when he'd been a mid and then a few months later, awarded a SECOND Black N to that same mid. I'm
pretty sure that that mid's parents never knew of either Black N nor the accompanying 2 months restriction.

Note: Law Enforcement folks would have termed me a "Known Associate" of that mid but I was never questioned
nor hassled in any way when he got in trouble. This was good as I was present for both offenses. . ..
ANNNND the 1 star/Mid in question now also has TWO kids who are alums, one of which overlapped with my son
and they were friends. I don't know of any skullduggery or mischief that THEY might have perpetrated but it
would not surprise me if there were some.
