Current Plebe - Ask Away!

Makes sense, during the summer maybe she can bring everything back home with her and then take it back. Which rises another question. My son is in the Army and he can fly with as many bags as he wants free of charges. Is this true for the Academy kids?
They will be young men and women in active duty status. Each airline has its military personnel baggage policy on its website.

I noted the Bible comment and good for her. There are lots of good bible apps. With reading plans etc. just a thought to save that weight and space. At least for the summer maybe.

Realizing they won’t have phone/electronics during the summer. Might still want it, but it’s just a thought.
We use YouVersion at home, but if she’s not going to have her phone during plebe summer then she’ll have no access to it. I get you about the weight.

While you are wait

These questions pop up every year as I-Day gets closer. There are pages of advice every year.

If the internal SAF function doesn’t bring up enough “I-Day” posts, try an external Google search and insert “site:www.serviceacademyforums.com” into your search string.

There is a post with a photo of everything issued - someone probably has it bookmarked. It’s a pile.

Every year there are PTBs (plebes to be) showing up wearing their athletic shoes and compression shorts under a pair of pants or shorts, a shirt, and a gallon baggie with a charged phone, charger, wallet, and required paperwork, maybe one or two other things. That’s all. They do just fine. Lean and mean.
Thank you. I’ll look for the picture of issue stuff. This is mostly for my peace of mind, like the shoes advise, never thought of it!

Some current plebe offered to answer questions, so I jumped on it. Did research on many of the stuff plus I read “rollercoaster” thread in it’s entirety. I’m glad to belong in such a helpful community of people. My DD does her own googling (is this a verb?!) so mainly this is for my peace of mind, if such a thing exist for an Academy parent Thank you for always being on point with your advise

Yeah. For my DS, our thought was he would be limited to Sunday service access during summer. Although I have no knowledge of that. Do they get to attend services during plebe summer? And are there bibles available there for them?

Here is a link to last year’s Permit To Report (PTR). Use it as a general heads-up but not as your definitive guidance. They don’t change much year to year.

BOOKMARK this page noted below and stay tuned for the spring update for the incoming class. Be sure to scroll through hamburger menu, upper left.

Yes to services. USNA chaplains are a wonderful group. Donuts are a big draw…

Depends on the airline, some of them will allow up to 2 free bags on personal leave, some of them only have that benefit when on orders. I always found Southwest to be worth the extra cash.

If on orders, excess baggage fees from the airline may also be reimbursed by the government (if written in the orders).

In my DD case her Bible is very personalized, she highlighted verses and made notes on the sides, probably there will be a Bible available for them there but if your DS has his “own” he may want to bring that one.

Agree. We like Southwest as well My DS usually travels AA on leave but I’ll double check policy anyway. Thank you

As appointments start to roll out and preparations start to be made, let me know if you have any questions! I did NROTC before coming to the academy and can answer questions about that if needed. It also took me three times to get into the academy so I implore those who do not get in to continue applying because it has been well worth the effort.
Thanks in advance.

In your Marina, are you allowed to rent/borrow a sailboat on weekends?

Can your family tag along?

There is the USNA sailing center marina on the Yard. I think mids have to earn certain sailing quals before being allowed to take a boat out. It’s the home of the Navy sailing team, so those assets are sports team assets.

There is the Naval Support Activity (NSA) Annapolis MWR (morale, welfare and rec) Marina across the Severn. People with appropriate active duty, Reserve or spouse ID and appropriate sailing quals are allowed to check various watercraft out.
