Current Plebe - Ask Away!

There is the USNA sailing center marina on the Yard. I think mids have to earn certain sailing quals before being allowed to take a boat out. It’s the home of the Navy sailing team, so those assets are sports team assets.
There are different boats for the Sailing Teams than for recreational checkouts. In particular the "Navy 26" boats which are what the plebes do their basic sail training on are available for checkout and are very rarely held back for events during the year. Minimum of two people, one of which has to have a "B" qual and refreshments are allowed.

DH used to volunteer for the summer sail training blocks when I was a BattO, but I haven’t been over there in a while. I know some can be checked out, some not. Thanks for refreshing me.

Thanks in advance.

In your Marina, are you allowed to rent/borrow a sailboat on weekends?

Can your family tag along?
Yes you can use them over the weekend and bring your family. You have to have your B qualification though and there are opportunities to get your qualification over the academic year.

During severe weather, is your schedule altered (walking to classes/lunch/dinner/fitness training)?
It depends. We had pretty bad flooding last semester and it was pouring outside and I still walked to class. Classes would really only get cancelled if their was a bad snowstorm. PT gets moved around sometimes if the weather makes it unsafe to train.

As appointments start to roll out and preparations start to be made, let me know if you have any questions! I did NROTC before coming to the academy and can answer questions about that if needed. It also took me three times to get into the academy so I implore those who do not get in to continue applying because it has been well worth the effort.

Ready?

During your Plebe sumner, did anyone had a birthday? My DD birthday is about 2 weeks before the end of plebe summer. I’m not in any way expecting to see her but we are just curious of what happens then

On the same celebrations topic. 4th of July did you hv some festive things scheduled?

Rain gear, do you get rain shoes/boots, rain jacket/poncho/parka, umbrella or should you pack your own.

Toiletteries, comb, brush, toothpaste, toothbrush, shampoo, conditioner, sunblock, body lotion, saline solution (contact lenses) body glide, anything else you should bring?

I understand plebe sumner is 100% uniform but, did you packed some regular clothes or Did your parents bring you civilian clothes when they came back for parents weekend (jeans, tshirts, sneakers)

I read somewhere to make sure you have your wallet with you and no to turn it in at the beginning of plebe summer, did you have it in your pocket a smaller backpack? Otherwise you’ll hv no cash

Can you hv snacks (granola bars) in your dorm, what about multivitamins?

Is it true that some plebes rent storage for overflow because the storage in the room is just enough for the necessary

Finally what do you wish you had brought from home

I’m sure I have more questions lol but that is plenty for now
@93RN Did a good job of answering this! Definitely bring plenty of pairs of spandex, some icy hot for sores at night, and baby powder. Those were really nice to have over plebe summer.

make sure she packs extra sports bras that she likes! and compression shorts! I have a plebe DD - feel free to reach out with more questions - mine brought her own toiletries and hair stuff to make buns - hair ties, spray and gel - for sure take 2 pairs of great fitting running shoes (1 she wears on drop off day and 1 extra) - bring wallet with some cash in it - they get to keep that - snacks yes but send to her with address that will be provided - no storage needed for plebe year - no civilian clothes plebe year - she will have 2 phone calls home and will be able to let you know if she needs things - just put the extra stuff in a back pack and bring all paperwork for drop off! make sure you have a copy of all the paperwork she brings just in case - also best piece of advice is dont put paperwork in back pack - that gets taken right at check in - put paperwork in folder and have her hold when she checks in! congratulations to your girl!

1.) not cool 😡 but my son is Army and he was laughing

2.) that’s a great way to explain it. We are BIG on Body Glide lol

3.) this is the best piece of advise. She’s been fitted for running shoes and wears a certain type, so noted!

4.) great

5.) do you remember what he has in backpack? I knew about cellphone, she’ll probably bring her wallet, Bible and journal.

6.) 7.) 8.) 9.) ok got it

Thank you very much!
1 extra pair running shoes
8 more pairs compression shorts
8 more pairs plain white athletic socks - calf height
retainer
wallet (cash, debit card, ss card, driver license) I recommend making copies of each to keep at home
Cellphone with charging cord and cube (each individual piece labeled) in 1/2 gallon labeled ziplock bag

When you get the PTR packet it will suggest extra well fitted sports bras.

Also I am so happy to see plebe parents jumping in and taking the lead on counsel and advice. This is the heart of every state parent group. Supporting the plebes and their parents. Way to go paying it forward in such a classy and accurate way.

Is this the stuff that goes into their backpack? When do they get it back? Thanks.

Not sure if answered already but personal bibles are allowed during PS and in fact are issued one. I gave DS a small bible for graduation to have and highlighted several verses for him.

DS showed up with a small cinch style bag. He then gave us the bag at PPW with his civvies that he wore on I-Day. Broken in shoes are a big deal however they will be issued two pairs of really good running shoes. Extra underwear, socks are a must.

Contacts are not allowed during PS and Plebes are issued prescription glasses as needed. DS has continued to wear his glasses during AC year because it is one less thing to do in the morning.

and yes mine brought underwear that she liked! the issued girls underwear is not so great! if anyone has girl questions let me know.......mine brought some extra socks - but she was fine with the issued socks. compression shorts that are issued are under armour and fine but mine likes a particular brand so she brought about 10 of those

Thank you with all my heart

once they get to their rooms they will get it back and be able to use and unpack......
I’m confused. I thought the bag is stored until the end of PS and you get to keep your personal necessities. What bag uou get back once in the room?’
