Let's say a candidate gets accepted into one academy (say, USXA), but reeeally wants another. For example, a candidate gets accepted to US"X"A, but really wants USMMA. But USXA has a deadline to accept an appointment. If the candidate is still technically in the running for USMMA, is it best to hold out and decline the appointment to USXA or just go ahead and accept the appointment to X academy? Other options? Any way to see how likely an appointment is from USMMA? Any advice would be very helpful. In a tough situation with having to decide very soon.

As someone who accepted a USMMA appointment, and then received a USXA appointment.... you just let them know. Assuming you are legitimately interested in attending the USXA school if you did not receive the USMMA appointment - lock it up and accept. Should circumstances change if new information presents itself, there is no harm in changing your mind. You are not truly committed to anything until you report to the school.

This week had significant appointment offers and we expect the same next week - based on historic reporting of appointments on this site. Once the schools know who is IN and who is OUT on May 1, more seats will open at all 5 schools and last minute changes happen.

Others here have reported that they have called the admissions office and were told a general range of where they were on the NWL. There is a XX% likelihood you will receive an offer of appointment based on the current situation of # accepted, where they think they will reach on the list, etc. Your success with the inquiry may vary. Years ago, they would actually mail you a letter that said your chances to help guide applicants.

I know your DD is applying to multiple schools based on your prior posts. I need to caveat this with my guidance is specific to USMMA. Additionally, understand that every SA admissions team is likely slammed with similar questions this time of year, so be understanding of that.

Of course, I understand. Thank you.

Is there any data as to how far down the NWL waiting list currently is at? Or is that also a delicate question for admissions?

To my understanding, the USMMA Admission team is the only one with visibility on this type of information.

Any suggestion on email vs. phone. DS has emailed his recruiter multiple times over the process not intrudingly just to update on progress. He only received one reply. So he's hesitant to reach out again. Welcome any suggestions as he's losing hope. Thx.

I would always suggest a phone call.

A bird in hand is better than one in the bush. Get used to that phrase, it's 100% correct and gets thrown around the maritime industry a lot.
