Son texted me that he struggled with the BB Throw at SLE this morning. He did okay practicing at home, then got to the SLE this morning an only threw around 38-40 ft. He said he was above average in everything else.

Will he have the opportunity to redo the CFA? :(

I am not sure of the answer but there is a post called "CFA scoring" that was posted in this forum in June 2017 that discusses this subject. Hope that helps.

Tell your DS not to sweat it. He will have at least another opp to improve on the CFA overall score. Contact his assigned FFR for instructions. BB throw is very much an art, not brute force. Our DS practiced before SLE last year and did above average. Good luck to your DS. It will be a long process so buckle down and enjoy.

Thank you! He practiced a couple nights before SLE and was inconsistent - but figured he'd get at least one good throw during his CFA. Unfortunately, that did not happen. He texted that he'll need to be consistent in practice before he takes it again!

My DD had the same issue too. We practiced for the past few weeks and she progressed really well.

She had a tough time gripping the ball on her forearm and hand just like it was shown in the YouTube videos. Maybe the basketballs they use at SLE are more smoother.

We went to an Academy day in our area in April. A local FFR brought in a girl who was accepted to USMA. She said she took the CFA a couple more times at home because her SLE scores weren’t so good.

Practicing the CFA segments separately to hone form and muscle memory (see YouTube videos) and then really working consistently and hard on doing it in the prescribed test sequence with the same timing is the key to polishing the performance.

Our DS is also currently at SLE and said the BB throw was tough. He mentioned the balls were smoother then what he had used at home for practice. I am sure nerves played a roll too. DS did not say what his best distance was but said he can do better. I am so excited to get to hear all his stories when he gets home. Its hard not getting to talk to them as they are so busy! But I know it's a good thing. Time for mom to let go a bit.

That basketball throw is the bane of the cadet candidate's existence. My daughter and I were driving back from a Kentucky New Cadet meet up this evening and the subject came up. She is glad she will never have to do it again.

My DS texted that it kept slipping out of his hand. When he practiced, he had used a new B.B. and was gripping the seams - and it just didn’t work today. I’m thankful that he’ll have another shot at it. He’s going to NASS in a few weeks, but is not sure if they’ll let him do the CFA at NASS, since he did it at SLE. Does anyone know?

If you don’t like your SLE/NASS performance, you have several months to do better. Remember that the CFA isn’t due until January. That’s plenty of time to improve in all events. My DD’s basketball throw improved significantly when she figured out how to activate her entire body above the knees: twist your hips and core and chest and shoulders. Oh, and we used a new, sticky ball. Good luck.

Yes, he'll do it again at NASS. My older son did both back to back two years ago and improved in pretty much every category the second time. He went SLE then NASS and was able to send the better scores from NASS to WP and USAFA. His younger brother is at NASS right now and had good scores today but is hoping for better next week at SLE.

My son had the same experience two summers ago. Went to SLE and two weeks later went to NASS and took the CFA at both. My son received his score from SLE prior to going to NASS and found out that he had passed. Nonetheless he took the CFA at NASS and sent the scores to WP to show improvement in a couple of the events. From what I understand, a candidate can also take it when returning home.

My DS is also at SLE this week. His CFA scores were above the avgs. He will go to NASS session #3 in a couple weeks. If he takes the CFA and doesn't do as well are you stuck with your NASS score? Or are you able to submit you best sitting?

I feel I read on the forum that if you retake the CFA, your scores improved or not are now your scores.

I think WP will default to the scores taken at SLE and Navy will default to NASS but you can have the better scores forwarded. Two years ago when DS's scores were better at NASS it was no problem to send those scores to WP and USAFA. It is nice to have one thing done and out of the way. FYI, the scores from USAFA SS are not considered official and will not count. But that's usually good because most do not do great on that test due to the altitude.

CFA will be administered at each service academy summer seminar including NASS.

My DS is at SLE this week and will be at NASS next week but I haven't heard much at all from him. He sent a snapshot of the sun coming up at 5:20am and I asked how the CFA went and all I got back was "it went well". I saw a NASS post that a parent received the CFA scores from the RC or Admissions Officer. I know when I see him, he will not remember his exact scores.

When he logs into his admissions portal, will the actual CFA scores be in the portal or is it just a checked box as in complete or not-complete?

    Don't worry about it.

At SLE, I had literally never done the basketball throw before in my life, and I failed that event.

I got home, practiced it a bit, and passed my CFA.

@Sam2018 For future reference how did DS send scores from one academy to the other? Was it as simple as an email to admissions? Our DS is at SLE and going to NASS in a couple weeks. So I assume he will need to send the best score to the other academy and to USAFA as well.
