Did the letter your DS received state "waiting list" or just simply state if a vacancy occurs, they will notify him?

I don't know what the letter says but, in practice, USNA determines whether there is any need to go to the wait list -- IOW, was the yield lower than expected. If they will take people off the WL, they look at who is on it and decide (based on merit, presumably), to whom to offer appointments.

I believe that, at that point, it's a one-for-one approach. Thus, if hypothetically they can take 15 additional people, they will notify 15 off the WL. If any of those decline, they contact additional WL people until they get the 15. Again, I'm not sure this is the case -- if someone knows otherwise, please correct me.

Last year, most -- if not all -- WL candidates didn't hear until around June 15. Very few got good news. In prior years, as many as 50 have come off the WL with appointments.

For whoever asked, the roster I was referring to in my previous comment was from last Friday, and presumably was inclusive of the week's activity. Basically, it leaves Northeast Ohio with candidates with offers on the table, a few WLs, and those who have accepted offers - not many undecideds left.

@Memphis...my Plebe son is one of those who has had 3/Cs (one last semester and one this semester) in his room...He does not like it!

I had no idea Plebes were being mixed with upperclassmen. That's crazy! I thought they were only mixing 2/C with 3/C -and- 1/C with 2/C. But Plebes ... ???

Makes it easier to keep an eye on the plebes and insures they chop all the way to the head

heard that last year West Point sent out more appointments than there were slots just like you are talking about for USNA and almost no one turned down their appointment. Was told they had to put 3 plebes to a room and that this had never happened to Westpoint before!

Absolutely untrue. West Point has had three plebes to a room (upperclass as well) for quite a few years now.
