Drop in numbers

Look at the link date. Again, this was 2011
Good point, Pima. Interesting to note that there has been nothing published (that I can find, at least) since about this time last year.......

btw, Pima, love your signature quote. Sounds like you have your priorities straight, IMHO.

huh?? If you look at the link I posted it is dated February 11, 2012 which was just this past week.

aggie83, I stand corrected. I apologize for not reading the thread more thoroughly. I note that "second chance" appears to still be on the table, as Gen. Gould only mentioned third and fourth chances going away.......That's something, at least.......

Aggie,

BobBigBoy also attached a link and CC responded to that link, I responded to CC's response.

From your link
The Air Force Academy has eight months to finish cutting the ranks of its cadet wing by nearly 275 cadets, the academy’s superintendent said Saturday.

It is not a 10% drop. Even at 4400, mathematically it is @ 7%. Still big, granted. However, as it is stated 3rd, 4th chances will not exist. Sorry, I have no pity there.

This appears to me to mean that they need to cut approx. 200 cadets from the classes of '13, '14 and '15, assuming approx. 70 drop out of the class of 2016 after/during BCT (which, apparently, is expected). Sorry for overanalyzing.......

Here is the article I read: http://www.usafa.af.mil/news/story.asp?id=123240940

In reading the article, the AF is very serious about reducing head count. In reading the USNA forum, they too are cutting by raising the qualifying rate at flight school to 92% achievement despite adding more ships to the fleet. Is it possible that by the time the current classes and the incoming 2016 graduate, they will be offered separation prior to assignment? I know there are plenty of casual graduates at the USAFA now...what will it be like in the future with the glut of officers. Also, is officer training school and ROTC also cut?

Rage, my son is in squadron 1. I remember the seniors that spoke during the shoulder-board pinning ceremony on A Day making a big deal about being the only squadron to still have all the cadets they started with on I Day. Hopefully they were telling us accurate info!

Eh not entirely true. My basic flight lost its first person last week. We had someone moved to another squadron during basic, but he is still technically here at USAFA. Our cadre too were floored that we all made it because they were saying that they lost upwards of 6 during basic, so the fact that we made it into February before we lost someone was pretty impressive.

Yeah, I read this but it doesn't address what happens after graduation. If you look at the overage of officers and staffing targets of the next couple of years, there is a lot of paring to do. Just wondering if they will offer separation to graduates rather than bloat the officer corps further. As I said, aren't there quite a few of the '11 graduates on casual duty still at the USAFA waiting for assignment? If is the case, the officer candidate school must be empty with any needs being filled by the Academy and ROTC. Maybe I am missing something here....please enlighten me.

The 2011 grads who were on casual status at USAFA were not without assignments. They were waiting for the start of their Undergraduate Pilot Training and were selected to stay at the Academy to assist instructors while waiting.

All of the graduates are assigned an AFSC (Air Force Specialty Code, or career) before they graduate, along with an asssignment to a base after gradaution. All of the grads receive 60 days of paid leave right after graduation (with a few exceptions) , and then they report to their respective bases to begin training. Because the pipeline for pilot training cannot take on 500 new trainees at once, they are spread out throughout the year. The 2Lts still report to the base that they will train at, they are just assigned 'casual' jobs while they are waiting for their time. My son had a job in the base command post as the duty officer on nights and weekends as his "casual". There are not nearly enough jobs at each base to absorb all of the grads, so the Academy keeps some of them at USAFA for the fall semester of the following year to assist the instructors. They are all now gone from the Academy and are at their respective bases.

I hope that cleared up the confusion about 'casual' status.
