Have any LOA's gone out for the class of 2019?

Thank you for the information. My next question is does one find out they are "qualified" or "not qualified" in a timely manner? It just seems so unfair to string along an "unqualified" applicant until April when it was determined in October they were unqualified.

Unfortunately, no. One of the reasons is that an unqualified candidate might, between October and April become qualified by, for example, scoring much higher on SATs, great first semester grades, etc.

You are a terrific resource and I appreciate your direction. Is the candidate informed that they need to work on their tests etc? My kid is passing up great opportunities at other schools because the heart is absolutely set on USNA. We were hoping for an LOA but every day that goes by it seems increasingly unlikely. Meanwhile other schools need apps in by November 1 for best scholarship consideration.

Your kid needs to apply to other schools and for the scholarships. These can be turned down if/when he or she rcvs an appointment. Always have plan B and C secured. My kids had scholarships to Ohio State and we even sent in deposit money even though they had USNA appointments in October. Reason: You never know what could come up to cause a medical disqual between October and I-Day. There just isn't enough bubble wrap. Once we returned from Iday, and plebes were in hands of USNA, we sent in letter to Ohio State declining admission and scholarship.

+1! DS had appointments to both WP and USNA in December of last year and we made 100% sure that he had the backup plans in place including the non-refundable deposits for just the reason falconchic notes. Why? Because less than six weeks before I-Day at USNA he sustained a late season lacrosse injury, that while not serious and nothing that time itself would heal, the academy did not feel he would be physically ready in time and he got medically DQ'd. While he's been cleared now and on a special program that USNA put him on while at a civilian college, these things happen when you least expect them. In short, follow the advice; apply to schools, get those scholarships, etc. and let the process play itself out. Nothing is guaranteed except the unexpected. Plan accordingly.

Haha I had a friend last year who, once he got his LOA to navy, didn't apply anywhere else. Needless to say he was freaking out until he got his nomination on the LAST possible day, Janurary 31st. Funny stuff.

Sometimes...however, there is always room for improvement unless the test has been max'd. Each individual needs to make this determination. 600 on both sections of the SAT/ACT is entering the stadium.

Am I correct in assuming that because my senior has applied to the USNA that precludes early decision option at another university?

Yes

Early decision it's not an option if the academy is your DD or DS first choice. If they get in early decision to their plan b, they have to take it. Kind of stinks. Too much pressure these days for the applicants.

Do you really think they can force you to attend? Read the fine print carefully, and understand any legal penalties.

My son and I just attended an admissions brief at the Naval Academy. I asked one of the admission counselors about the LOA's. He said they are being extremely cautious with the LOA's this year because they gave out too many last year. It created problems when they had to give out the final appointments.

When someone posts that they've already received their BFE does that mean they have 1.) Been accepted into the USNA AND 2.) They've received their moc nomination?

Yes and yes. "BFE" (Big Fat Envelope) is indicative of an appointment and an appointment cannot be received without a nomination. Those receiving BFEs now likely have a Presidential nomination as MOC nominations have not gone out yet. Hope this helps.

The admissions counselor at the Naval Academy admissions brief (10/18) said they are being careful not to send out too many LOAs this year. I guess they had some hurdles to deal with because there were more candidates with LOAs than there were appointments/vacancies. It is my understanding that many 2018 candidates with LOAs did not receive appointments.
