My daughter just received a call from NROTC “application coordinator” / recruiter. , basically offering an ISR scholarship based on her test scores and transcript . The recruiter told her if she agrees to accept the ISR , then USNA is off the table … Is there any truth to this ? She perceived that she was being pressured quite a bit to agree to go thru the ISR process NOW. USNA is her #1 choice .

I actually thought this was a post from a year ago. Almost exactly the same details. While waiting for informed responses, make sure to use the search function to find other posts on this same subject.

Best of luck to your DD.

Will use the SAF search also …I wasn’t sure if something had changed recently . Thank you for the good wishes !

I thought the same.

Then I thought “wow, that’s early!!”

IDK either. But there are people who may have insight. Paging @GWU PNS as one potential source. I’m sure there are others…

This is not true. I accepted ISR. Will be at plebe summer tomorrow morning. Take the scholarship, it’s a solid back up.

...Will be at plebe summer tomorrow morning...
At some point during the day tomorrow, you're going to say to yourself "What in the World have I gotten myself into?"

When that happens, you will invariably be in a line of Plebes waiting to get some new item stuffed into your pillowcase and guess what?
That person in front of you is thinking the exact same thing. This is when you should chuckle to yourself and find the humor in it.

They want to give the ISR to someone who is committed to using it. This is why they press for quick decisions and at least mentally remove options you might exercise later. They'll make the offer to someone else if your DD declines it

I’m a very laid back guy. Finding the humor won’t be an issue. Learning to get serious, on the other hand…

Pro tip, from my 2024: Don't crack a smile when you are being 'addressed' by a detailer with a loud voice. He said he never did it, but the struggle was real.

Good luck to you and thank you for being willing to do hard things, and say, "I DO".

My smiles are involuntary. Unfortunately we don’t have masks to hide anymore. I’ll do my best though :shake:

There is a time and place for humor ...Plebe summer isn't all yelling and pushups... In fact, some of my favorite memories of USNA were humorous moments during Plebe summer, including doing the Rocky Horror Picture Show "Time Warp" in the back shaft, and the time that one of my company mates sent a post card to a detailer. (And then there was the time at NAPS INDOC, when the detailer showed up for PEP feeling the pain of a hard night in Newport !). Keep your sense of humor ., but understand if used at the wrong time, you will pay !

Good luck to all of '26.. enjoy the ride !

I think you should reach out to more official sources for advice because the commander of the recruiting district who awarded me the ISR happened to be a USNA grad and knew I also had an appointment to USNA. He spent a long time talking me through the pros and cons before awarding me the scholarship and wishing me good luck with my decision. I accepted the ISR and signed the paperwork, but ultimately chose the academy.

Update : DD met with recruiter in person last wk … She was very clear that USNA was her #1…recruiter seemed ok & agreed to email paperwork to start process … then she got email today saying that they changed their mind & would not offer ISR because it might mess with their quota .

Over the years it has seemed to be a mixed bag on the ISRs. The last few years it seems they won’t offer them unless a candidate 100% commits to the ISR and a SA is off the table. For a candidate that isn’t interested in a SA, it’s a great deal. I understand it, going after highly desired (in most cases) candidates. Every school, including SAs and SMCs do this. ROTC battalions/units also do this. Just observations over the years on this forum.

Thank you so much for your input . It’s very helpful .

Actually, I have one DD in AROTC currently , and her younger sis is the one that got the ISR . And yes , we have been going back and forth since June / July . She was sending all of her stuff for the Naval national scholarship pool when they decided ISR for her . She is a very cool cucumber and much more patient than her parents. 🤣
