Good afternoon,

I just received an email from USMMA explaining that I have been classified as a "Hold Candidate". I understand the meaning and significance of this status. I do have one question, roughly what percentage of Hold Candidates end up receiving appointments? Thank you!

Your chances are good. You can find stats from the past several years on the USMMA website. Search "class profile." Congratulations and good luck!

I was a "hold" candidate back in the dark ages, but we weren't called that back then in the days before internet and personal computers. We were told that did not receive a principal appointment, but at least I was told that it was likely that I would receive an appointment and then given my ranking. I got a letter within days after that. Just remember, getting an appointment is just the beginning.

I’ve searched the forums and I think I have a slight understanding but what exactly is a “hold” candidate?
My son has 1 senate nom and 1 moc nom for USMMA and we’re new this process. Just trying to make sense of all of this.

It means your son is fully qualified for admission. Most candidates go on a hold status prior to an appointment. Hold can last from a few days to a few months while Admissions sorts out the offers. Most (not all) hold candidates ultimately receive an offer, so hold is a good thing. The wait is tough, but try to appreciate every day you have with your son. Good luck!

Question.....DS received a letter from admissions saying he was placed on the national HOLD list on Jan 12. He received his nomination from our Senator a few days later. Is there any significance to being added to the national Hold list this early in the game (versus state wait list?). Wondering if that means no action until post April 1? We are in NJ. Thanks!

Are you sure it didn't say "state or national hold list?" I don't think we can read much into anything at this point but best of luck to your DS :)

Thanks for your reply. First it says national hold list then it goes on to say “state or national” lists.
“you have been found to be academically qualified and have been placed on the national waiting list as a Hold Candidate.

As vacancies occur, Hold Candidates are offered appointments in order of merit, based upon their competitive standing on the state and national listings”

With USMMA first appointing highly qualified candidates by state allocation (each state getting specific number of slots based on congressional representation), presuming a candidate does not receive one of those initial state allocated slots, a fully qualified candidate is placed on the National Wait List. By the letter your DS received I believe he is still in the mix for a state slot if one of the original state appointees declines their appointment prior to April 1 - Admissions board then offers appointment to next highest ranked fully qualified candidate in the state. Or does Hold mean they do in fact have to wait till April 1 and transition to NWL?

Hold can be at the State or National level (after 4/1 - I would say it would be more at the National level)- Someone please correct me if I am wrong. Hold just basically means they have reviewed your file and you are " academically qualified for an appointment" and as they determine the state/national standings you may come off hold and receive an appointment. I just looked back and my DS received his hold letter on 11/21/19. It also says "you have been found to be academically qualified and have been placed on the national waiting list as a Hold Candidate". He received his appointment on 2/12/20.

I believe you are correct, candidates either appointed or put on hold / NWL (see Domine vs. Kumar from 2012), with Hold candidates competing for appointment within state ranking prior to 1 April and within NWL ranking after 1 April
