Humor for my Navy and Marine friends

Nicholas-copy.jpg

On Nov. 10, 1775, the Continental Congress in Philadelphia, Penn. authorized the raising of two battalions of Marines to serve “for and during the present war between Great Britain and the colonies." Samuel Nicholas set about enlisting marines in the newly established military organization. His base of operations for this recruitment drive was Tun Tavern, a popular local watering hole built by Joshua Carpenter in the late 17th Century.

Tun Tavern burned down in 1781, near the end of the Revolutionary War. It's unlikely to be reconstructed, at least not on its original site, which is now occupied by Interstate 95. But a memorial plaque close to the original site commemorates this important piece of American history.

On a concrete and brick sidewalk that actually shows wear on it, because so many people stop and snap this photo.

It's a lot like Chesty's grave. Grass all around, but just dirt in front of the marker. A friend of mine was just there recently and it sounds like they just gave up trying to grow grass around it and put down gravel instead.
