DS applied for National Scholarship and sadly did not receive it. He went ahead and spent his freshman year as a walk on... hoping to compete for a campus based scholarship. Nothing came through for him or the others, (we all know how tough it has been). He decided to keep with it and see what his upcoming MS II year would bring. I'm happy to announce his LTC offered him a 3 yr AD scholarship!!!! We head back to his school in a few days and are looking so forward to seeing him contract.
Congratulations to your son.
This along with a few other posts recently seems to follow what has been written in previous articles that Scholarship awards may be starting a new balance between National Awards and Campus Scholarships. It will be interesting to watch and see if there is a new trend in scholarship awards.
I have to echo TGP's post, it is surely a scary/happy moment. My son starts his second year in a week and we talked about how it all becomes much more real now that he will be obligated, he is very excited as I'm sure your son will be.
You get the urge to place them in bubble wrap. I’m sure you’ve had the discussions as most parents do but now they carry much bigger consequences. Alcohol infractions, MIP’s, MIC’s, and above all DUI’s can derail a cadet on the spot. Such an incident not only removes them from the program but also incurs a payback of all scholarship money, even a traffic violation with a fine over $250.00 can have consequences.
Now is the time to celebrate, just make sure he understands the new obligations he is about to sign.
Best of luck to your son, he has cleared that first hurdle of getting a contract, the scholarship is a great bonus. Now that he is contracted he can complete for summer training slots for this summer. Another thing, now that your son will be contracted, he will be eligible for CULP, if your son is not familiar with the program he can look it up or talk with his cadre. The application process for CULP starts early in the first semester, it’s a great program open to only contracted cadets. My son participated this summer and had a blast, it is a great opportunity.
