January 4, 2011 AROTC Board

The govt does make it confusing.

This is an AROTC site, and out of respect for them, I will start an AFROTC forum to divert this conversation.

Let's keep it AROTC as much as possible. Threads take on a life of diversion, and it appears we have entered that realm.

Back to AROTC.

SO how many of the candidates have all of their answers to their top picks?

Have any of you contacted these BNs to see how many slots are filled?

Hahahahaha. Thanks, Pima. Back to AROTC. See you on the other thread!!

Since CC has only offered 400 scholarships, I'd think most would have openings....well, they might think they have openings since BNs don't know for sure how many spots they will actually get this year. Horse - cart, cart- horse.... hopefully, CC will let them know something soon.

Good topic change. Now when ROOs get 1K emails/calls about number of slots, Pima will know just how many read and love her posts. Me included.

DS's AFROTC status page changed to "you have been awarded a scholarship" 12-23-10. Received several letters from 12-28 through 1-7-11 stating that he had been awarded a Type 7 in a technical major then the next letter said in a language major then the third letter said back to a technical major. An Air Force Captain from Maxwell called and apologized for the confusion and told my son that it was a Type 7 with a technical major and he had until 1-26-11 to respond.

OMG! Colonel Gadhafi has decided to get into the scholarship game as well!! http://www.cnn.com/2011/WORLD/africa/02/22/libya.protests/index.html?hpt=T1

Gadhafi's remarks, which lasted more than an hour, came after a brief appearance early Tuesday on Libyan state TV in which he denied rumors that he had fled to Venezuela.
Libyan state TV described the crowds on the streets who were watching Gadhafi's speech as his supporters; an opposition leader said they had been dragged onto the streets.
Some students at Tripoli's Academy of Graduate Studies were offered free master's degrees if they joined Gadhafi supporters in Green Square, a source said. Some people in Tripoli were offered money to put pictures of Gadhafi on their cars and go to Green Square, the source said.
Even as he called on Libyans who "love and support him" to take to the streets and demonstrate for him, Gadhafi's grip on power appeared to be weakening.

Hey all...check it out.

First off Ohio is right...we don't know how many offers.

So anyways...just got an email from Brigade...offers coming soon...We are instructed not to contact winners until letters go out...I will definitely let you all know when I get the word that we got the word, but I bet some of you can get your ROOs to give you a hint. In my case "keep an eye on your mailbox" usually indicates good news on the way. Without going into the details, I will tell you that if I'm reading the guidance correctly, how they are going to allocate this round of offers will be a topic of conversation that may make this discussion thread look like a twitter tweet. It's not pretty, and some of you will have some difficult decisions to make.

Hang in there..hope for the best...be prepared to evaluate all the options...and I hope when the smoke clears some of the DDs and DSs will still feel that becoming an Army Officer is worth the cost.

Let the games begin.

Thanks, I think. Cedar Point's Dragster is looking lame compared to this ride.

Thank you for the heads up and your honesty. Bring it on, DS is ready for just about anything but more waiting. Mom is too.

This does sound ominous! I am almost afraid to hear the news. I'm so emotionally invested in all this - it will be really tough to get bad news.
I think DS will be glad that all the waiting is over, but I just hope that he'll be able to see the big picture. I think that the SMOKE CLEARING is going to be truly telling in terms of his desires, and as a mom I hope I know how to encourage him if it comes to that. (Parenting sure is a hard job!)

Well it looks like the unsigned budget didn't cause the hold up.

clarksonarmy's post doesn't sound like a "sorry for the delay, but we had a ton of boxes to move" notice. This board will light up soon.

No, but this sample of articles from today maybe why they decided it is not in CC best interest to wait for the budget to be signed. Clarksonarmy indicates these will not be business as usual offers, so obviously, just moving didn't hold this up either....can we all just agree there has been a hold up for a lot of different reasons and we've all been impacted by this(as well as our kids, don't forget this is about them!!) and be glad the end maybe in sight for some of us. Some will still have to wait out the final board too.

Oh, and more importantly I LEARNED HOW TO COPY/PASTE LINKS!!! :thumb:

If I were a betting man, I would bet that they are going to offer many more 3 yr scholarships, and far fewer 4 year. That would reduce monetary outlay over the next year significantly, and require recipients to demonstrate their commitment by participating for a year on their own dime. This would also be consistent with Clarkson's comment that the kids will have "some hard decisions to make." Hope I'm wrong, but just sayin...

Just told my DS about clarksons' post. Yes, parenting is tough stuff. He's now ping around in his head a 1001 possible scenarios: of course, none good. Sometimes I wish that boy wasn't quite so bright a bulb.

Hope all the DS/DD and their loving mommas and daddies are ready for what comes next.

I've been helping a few people in my town wade through some of the ROTC things this school year as I had gone through it last year and received a phone call half an hour ago from one of the moms
They spoke to one of the schools that her son applied to and were told that this is going to be a tough year. Maybe it was the news that Clarkson is talking about but they said things are going to be different. Just like last year, the caliber of applicants is incredible and that kids that are extremely strong candidates may unfortunately get passed over. She was also told that her son needed to be open to all the schools that he applied to and be willing to accept that if he was offered scholarship it may only be to one school and not his first few choices and not what they expected. Transferring may be more difficult than ever.

I wish you all good luck. It is amazing the amount of applicants out there who are so brilliant, hard working and willing to serve. Hopefully their hard work will finally pay off for them. And you all!

Good luck everyone!!!!! cjs, I have to say that this whole SAF experience has been an amazing experience. Not only do we have an amazing bunch of candidates, but the parents and active duty folks all working together has been truly amazing. You and others (list too long to mention) do not have a dog in this fight; just know that your willingness to help others who are navigating through this for the first time is truly, truly appreciated!! I and others plan to pay this forward and hopefully will be in your shoes next year, helping folks.

I expect next year will be even tougher than this year; $60 billion in proprosed cuts for 2011 is almost a drop in the bucket for a $14 TRILLION deficit!

Thanks again! And good luck to all!!!

Ohio, the dems taking aim at the military budget is likely just sending a signal for the repubs to back off social security, medicare, etc. At the end of the day, I expect all sides to walk away bruised.

Leapyear I'm inclined to agree with the 3 year offers being more prevalent which will help ease the budget issues. Agreed I think this year the pool of students seems very competitive. DS called the PMS at his 1st choice school a few months ago over some paperwork issues and he said "The greater possibility was in a 3 year scholarship for him." Granted he isn't a fast runner and that may have played a role in the thought process of the PMS, but maybe they've been gearing in that direction anyway.
