January 4, 2011 AROTC Board

Just to through this into the mix, see also Post #209 from Fastpitch on the corresponding Navy ROTC thread concerning results from the last NROTC board (http://www.serviceacademyforums.com/showthread.php?t=15596&page=21), where the Navy parents are being told that the Navy has unexpectedly decided to slam the brakes on things, when they were told something COMPLETELY different just two weeks ago. Coupled with the recent US Air Force Academy's announcement that it is suddenly reducing the size of its incoming class, a common theme is starting to emerge. These changes do not appear to be attributable to computer problems, changes locations for CC personnel, or DoDMERB clearances. And, with all due respect, even an AROTC PMS who participated in the last AROTC board is NOT invited to sit at the table during these congressional budget meetings. These are decisions being handled by Army General Officers, JAG Corps officers, and Finance Corps folks -- not ROTC cadre. In that regard, the ROTC cadre do not have more information than any of us do.

Moreover, I wouldn't be surprised if we start seeing announcements from the other SAs about class-size reductions, similar to the ones that USAFA has made already. As Pima has previously mentioned on one of these threads in connection with the USAFA announcement, this will have a downward cascading effect throughout the ROTC ranks, because more folks who received ROTC slots from the first board who are waiting to hear on SA appointments will opt for the ROTC slots they have been awarded. A perfect storm.

I apologize for being negative. I hope I'm wrong, but I'm with Ohio2015Parent on this one. I'm trying to think about other things now. But I still would like to see this thread earn its coveted place in the SAF Hall of Fame!

Must. Think. Happy. Thoughts. Given what I've learned on this board from everyone here, the chances of my DS receiving an AROTC scholarship appear to be very, very low at this point because of his school-choice selection. Ohio2015Parent, the point you made about "Let's just get the 'ding' notice done already!" is a really good point! My DS has the same attitude as your's -- he's focused on earning a commission one day. This whole scholarship thing is simply a distraction from that objective, because he's not doing it for the money.

I saw a thread from last January's AROTC board and thought it would be a good distraction to start one for this year too.

Anyone else (lurkers speak up too) waiting for the results? My DS is and while he's rather zen and chill about this I'M NOT! So whether you're a parent or prospective cadet please join me in the long month of waiting - post your location, and stats you'd like to(schools, majors etc...) we can root and cheer for each other and probably a few of us will continue to wait for the March board too. Good luck to all, look forward to talking with you!!

DS and I are from Cincinnati, OH - he hopes to attend either Ohio University or Eastern Kentucky University. Majors he's considering: International Affairs w/ 1 or 2 languages, Criminal Justice/Police Studies or Fire Studies. He is one of the odd prospects that were sent to do DodMERB before being offered a scholarship out of the October boards - he is medically qualified as of 23-12-10.

Once again, hope to connect with others waiting.........

Not sure when the 4 January Army ROTC Scholarship Board results will be released. Anybody know anything?

4 January Army ROTC Scholarship Board

Anybody out there have any info on when the results of the 4 Jan 11 Army ROTC Schoarship Board will be released?

Excuse some of our old faithful posters....but honestly, if you read thru much of this thread, the answer is no, we don't know when exactly the results of the 1/4/11 AROTC board will be released. This thread has discussed the delay of results over this entire thread, so if you'd like more details, please read and decide for yourself. We have heard possible next week, but that has been said before with no results coming out. Take care & good luck!

2 different things.

That may seem antagnostic, but I am not trying to imply that at all, I am trying to say there is limited money to go around and none of us sat on the DoD council, so we need to accept what is being stated as truth...if you start the they are hiding things, life will be bad when you enter this world.

You also need to remember how big the ARMY is...how many people not only military members, but contractors and civilians work for them. It takes a lot of time to filter down.

Trust in them. They want the best for you (candidate) and your child. They will take them in as one of their own. It stinks to be where you are now, but once you enter their world, you will get what I just stated about taking them in.

Pima, I don't think anyone feels you are antagnostic to state your opinions. Please don't feel I am being stubborn or unappreicative of your input. In cases where I have more than one stream of information and they are not in total agreement typically I evaluate and pick a battle wisely. In this case, it truly isn't important why they have followed this path with the results - the applicants are in the same position regardless. I will never know with absolute certainty why the Army will make many, many decisions regarding my DS's future - I don't accuse anyone of being untruthful, manipulative or unfeeling, it just isn't always for the little people to know or understand all the moving pieces in such complex decisions involving large entities.

I do hope you will continue to hang out with us as we all await the big day(s) when the results come in and everyone moves on from why and when are the results coming out to the Oh, my DD/DS is going here, doing this and we are so proud posts that are going to happen no matter what:biggrin:

new to the forum

We are completely new to the ROTC process. How did you find out if your son or daughter was passed over for a board?

Anybody out there have any info on when the results of the 4 Jan 11 Army ROTC Schoarship Board will be released?

Ralph, I'm sorry for being a bit punchy earlier. Welcome to www.serviceacademyforums.com!! You have stumbled on the hottest thread of all time on SAF, which happens to be discussing your precise question. It just seemed kind of funny that you posted your question mid-stream in our heated debate of what is going on with the Jan. 4 board. The real take-away from the discussion is that we're getting mixed messages from various folks, and this has all of us confused.

Again, welcome to SAF!! We look forward to your questions. To the extent we can answer them, we will try. If we cannot, eventually someone with more smarts than any of us will respond.

Excuse some of our old faithful posters....but honestly, if you read thru much of this thread, the answer is no . . .

Ohio, I've been trained to read questions VERY carefully.

There is an old lawyer trick used to prepare witnesses for testimony and to help them listen to the question presented VERY carefully and answer ONLY the question presented and answer it truthfully. What I used to do to refine their listening skills was to ask them the following question: "Do you know what time it is?" The witnesses would invariably look at their watch and inform me that "It's 3:30!" That's when I responded with, "No. The correct answer really is 'no', but if you want to provide additional information to move things along, you can also say, 'If you would like me to tell you what time it is, Sir, I must take a look at my watch. Do you want me to look at my watch and inform you what time is reflected on my watch?'"

Patentesq, I do adore you!! Yes, I can see the lawyer training now that you've explained the technique...but poor Ralph has no idea that you're an attorney and normally one of the nicest most helpful posters currently on our thread...he only reads you being a bit "punchy"...so I had be merciful and let him in on the information. My training as the mother of 3 teeens is read between EVERY line and over inform them of the consquences of ANY choice they make....also that any "innocent" remark can be the Rosetta stone of deciphering their inner most secrets so I over analysis EVERYTHING THEY SAY.:yllol::wink: Mother with attorney training would be a dangerously efficient combination.

I got a letter from DodMERB saying I am qualified. Now I only have to wait for one thing!

I know this is off-topic. But with this post, this thread is now officially in the lead as the most posts EVER for a single thread!! Check out the ranking on the main page!

Glad you got word that you qualified with no remedial issues. May the good new keep coming your way!

February 13th

Good morning.

I was reading the NROTC threads this morning, it sounds brutal this year for their scholarships too. But at least they are hearing something....

It is warming up here in Ohio so I think today I will be spring cleaning and enjoying some sunshine. Will check in later to see who's around.

The lack of information is the most annoying thing. The AROTC status page doesn't even let you know if the application was board ready, or was reviewed by the board. We could be sat here waiting for results and our kids haven't even been reviewed yet.

On the plus side the delay has allowed time to explore other options.

FloridaDad, some might suggest that it's the inconsistent information that is most annoying! :shake:

I try to stay positive and keep reminding myself that delays are actually a very, very, very good thing. I suspect that many DS/DDs have listed multiple schools on their AROTC applications and haven't yet received admissions decisions from many, if not most, of those schools. If any of these DS/DDs receive the nod from CC in March, they won't have to go through the SWAG drill of selecting a school to which the scholarship is to be applied without knowing whether they've been admitted to that school. Am I the only one who views this as the silver lining?

Unfortunately, the downside for CC in any further delay is that they run the risk of not knowing how many scholarships to award for the March AROTC board, because there will likely be many offers still outstanding because the 30-day decision window hasn't expired. Seeing that we are now halfway through February, I hope that this doesn't mean that the March 8 board decision will result in another period of delay that goes past May 1. This issue bodes well for the possibility of an announcement this week! However, if announcements from the Jan. board are delayed another two weeks, until March, then we'll likely see a corresponding delay in the March Board announcements because they'll want to see who has accepted and who declined before announcing new scholarship offers (especially if DoD is being asked to tighten its belt for FY11).

The delay must also must annoy the USMA admissions office, because I suspect that some folks may be postponing acceptance of their appointment until they hear definitively from AROTC. If these folks are denied an AROTC scholarship, then the choice between "walking on" to ROTC at a college somewhere (with NO guarantee of being admitted to the AROTC program and subsequently earning a commission) and attending USMA is very clear. However, if they are blessed to have both USMA and AROTC opportunities, then they have other decisions to make.

The same holds true for students who have received merit scholarships from School A but not from School B. If they receive an AROTC scholarship, then both schools are economically on the same level. However, without an AROTC scholarship to "nullify" the merit scholarship, then School A might be the clear choice for them.

I suspect the reason this thread has gained so many views is that folks want to make decisions. And they want to make them now!

It is a brutal yr for every branch. Everyone needs to remember that the military does 5 yr strategic planning regarding personnel, and this is the yr that is hitting all of them.

This yr is the perfect storm...winding down overseas ops, people not separating, economy stinking, more applicants and a shrinking DOD budget.

I am sure you won't to just take that wine glass or beer pilsner and hit the wall.

Look at it this way, in a few days you will have the answer. It's like child birth, you scream at your DH (Army) all the way through it of YOU DID THIS TO ME, but the minute the child is born (scholarship), you forget all of the pain, and realize it was well worth it.

It gives you no solace in that analogy, I know that, but the one thing I know is that next yr., you all will be around trying to assist those who are rightfully venting their frustrations.

I am way impressed at this thread...pages and pages ago it could have become a beaachhh fest about the Army, but it hasn't. It truly shows the dedication of how badly all of you want to serve or their children want to serve.

To me that is the best sign in the world that they will have the best cadets ever.

Goodluck, and here's hoping that the Army sends a Valentine's Day card to every candidate.
