January 4, 2011 AROTC Board

Like this strategy too

Not sure what he would. Obviously a transfer would be the first option. He would probably go to the school he has committed to and take a chance on an in-school scholarship. He is a really strong candidate and if the ROTC staff spent time with him he would be OK. The AROTC process doesn't really take account off many intangibles: one short 1-on-1 interview and no letters of recomendation leave the board with a very one dimensional view IMO.

My DS sounds very similar to yours: spend time with the guy and you realize this is the sort of man that will lay down his life for you. So I believe that a campus based scholarship would find him. I agree this is not a bad approach if you have someone that is a strong candidate but because of what's going on in the world isn't chosen this year.

Here is an article about what can be expected if the government shuts down next week: http://money.cnn.com/2011/02/21/news/economy/government_shutdown/index.htm. USPS will continue to operate (hopefully, the AROTC website will continue to be updated as well).

Assuming that the delay is budget-related, I expect that CC is busy right now working up multiple contingency plans and formulating a "shutdown plan." Regardless, I do not expect CC to remain silent past April 15 and to not provide guidance to anyone.

Pima's suggestion of speaking with the colleges is a very good one. If there is no resolution to the AROTC situation, I would ask for a waiver of the deposit requirement because of circumstances beyond the applicant's control. I would think that the colleges would be receptive to this request, because don't they want to have ROTC scholarships redeemed at their school?

Patent,

Some schools do care about ROTC, because it is a recruitment tool...i.e ERAU, VT, etc. Some don't talk to ROTC at all, UVA and UMDCP.

However, it never hurts to ask. A 20 minute phone conversation can save you hundreds of dollars. That is a good ROI.

What is the worst they will say? NO?

I would not do this if your child has yet to be accepted, but if they have been accepted and it is only the scholarship, than try.

Irony is I know UMDCP admissions doesn't talk to ROTC at all, but I know a parent who called and they did make an exception regarding housing.

One thing also to look into is sometimes the money is just to hold a housing spot. Sometimes it is actually a queue, first in first choice of dorms.

This forum is so helpful and yet my head spins with all the information! So now I am understanding if DS accepts AFROTC scholarship he can't accept the AROTC later when board results are in instead. (assuming that he gets an offer and it's a 4 yr) Sigh. Did sound a little too good to be true. Feb 28th is deadline. He chose and was accepted to all out of state schools (SMC's) and I certainly can't afford to help a lot. He was awarded type 7 which can be converted to a Type II 3 yr. The 1st year he is on his own. He is still waitlisted for USMA as well. It's so great to even have options of course but wow. He is perplexed because of the 02/28 deadline for AFROTC. Any advice?

Run some numbers, consider intangibles

Run some numbers to see what sort of potential costs you are looking at if you were able to choose between two options. Look at intangibles like distance from home, career goals, school fit, program structure and strength. Pray like crazy.

Great question!!! Is acceptance of an offer binding? Can you accept on ROTC scholarship, and if another is offered later, rescind the first offer?? Would love some advise from all of the "experts" on this forum! Thanks in advance.

Deadlines Deadlines Ahhhhh! Appreciate the responses. This is a rollercoaster. I am going to make a few calls and see what I can come up with. If anything

You can decline an offer at a later date, and accept a better offer. Accepting a scholarship offer doesn't obligate you to anything. Conversely, a scholarship offer is contingent on you becoming fully qualified. Until you raise your right hand, and sign on the dotted line you don't have an obligation.

According to the AFROTC site for HS students http://afrotc.com/scholarships/high-school/critical-dates/

May 31

Final date for High School Scholarship Program scholarship winners to submit the Air Force ROTC Scholarship Statement of Intent and a copy of the letter of admission in the academic major identified on the scholarship offer from a school offering the Air Force ROTC Program. Forms may be mailed or faxed.

I thought I was losing my mind with the 2/28 AFROTC deadline because I recalled when DS got his in January, back in 08 they stated that he had until MAY. I also recalled ly that it was still true for AFROTC.

However, what is the allowed this yr is not to be assumed that it will be allowed next yr.

In that scenario if AROTC offers in April, you still can take them over AFROTC since you have yet to be required to submit a decision.

The letter my DS received on Saturday stated that the letter needed to be returned by 2/28. It also stated that he needed to decide if he would accept the Type 7 or wanted to change it to a 3 yr Type 2. He is still awaiting other offers, and is hoping for a 4 yr. OOS scholarship.

Less than 1 Week to decide?

Don't have any firsthand experience but a 1 week turn around doesn't really same reasonable for many reasons. Wondering what we can all learn from this?

IF your DS is 18, he needs to call MAXWELL immediately or email them tonight.

I mean no offense to Clarkson, but this is AFROTC and AFROTC is not AROTC...i.e. AFROTC does not ask for 5 school picks like AROTC. AFROTC every grad will serve AD, not Guard or reserves. AF is much smaller, @ 1/3 the size of the Army.

Each branch has their regs. The AF is going through big time re-structuring, to the point that the AFA will be offering @200 less apptmts this yr, OTS was canceled last July, expected SFT % is to be under 50% for 11.

Only Maxwell can tell you if it is considered binding.

Call them! Call them NOW!

Can someone explain the types of scholarships that you've been discussing?
Thanks

Are you serious that he only had ONE WEEK to decide???????

Only Maxwell can tell you if it is considere!

A letter of acceptance is not binding. Its not a contract endof. Until the process and all conditions of the scholarship are complete either party can back out.

AF has Type 1, 2 or 7

Type 1, is the biggest, bestest, and only 5% of applicants get that, and 95% of them are engineers.

They can take it public or private with no cap on tuition. They will receive stipends, plus 900 a yr for book allowance.

Type 2, is capped at 18K, but you can make up the difference in cost be it FA or other scholarships.

Again, you get a stipend and a 900 book allowance.

Type 7, is quasi.

You may be offered the chance to convert to Type 2 for 3 yrs, and elect to pay for the 1st yr out of pocket.

OR

You can go to a college that costs their limit. I believe it is 18K. However, you cannot pay the difference. I.E. School costs 20K, you can't use Type 7, since you are not allowed to pay the difference. Thus, many will convert the 7 to a 2.

It is all about budgeting.

Hope that helps.

Remember that is AFROTC, I don't have a clue about AROTC. Every branch has their own issues. AFROTC... they don't care where you go, but they grab you on the fiscal side. From what I know about AROTC, they grab you on where you go, but the fiscal side is not the issue.

Thanks Pima - It sure does seem like the government has to make everything complicated!

When my son recieved his NROTC scolarship in Dec, he also only had a week to accept, however in the letter it states that" accepting the scholarship does not obgligate you to attend the NROTC program" i'm not sure if its the same for AFROTC, but he should definitley ask!!!

I will tell also tell you that my DS got his letter 1 week ago as well and has until 02/28 and I am still completely confused

Given the very short two-week deadline and little news on the AROTC/NROTC fronts, my guess is that everyone will accept who receives any such offer. However, this will paint a false picture for AFROTC planners as they may think they've scooped up the good candidates ahead of the other services. The end result will be that AFROTC will be forced to award fewer AFROTC scholarships in future boards, but a lot of folks won't show up at the AFROTC detachments in the fall. When we used to have a deadline of May 31 (i.e., before my time on SAF), this didn't appear to be a problem.

Am I reading this wrong?
