January 4, 2011 AROTC Board

Cowsort....was the school UP by chance? If so, they use that merit money towarsd teh scholarship so the Army has to pay less. Does that make sense?

Not sure that is right...the Army pays all tuition and fees, or Room and Board. I would be very surprised if there was a school out there that would be generous enough to help the Army save some money. The school may allow you to use the merit scholarship to cover room and board, or if the Army is paying Room and Board the merit scholarship can cover T & F.

The question about DODMERB status helping or hurting, shouldn't factor into the equation. Some applicants won't even be allowed to start their medical until they get an offer. Same with declining USMA. Shouldn't be seen by the board, or factored into the equation.

Clarksons Army, What would you have to say about the applicants getting their DoDMERB packets in the middle of January, or even before then (and haven't applied for the Academies)? I would assume that this is a good sign, and I was just wondering if you had an further information that could explain it?

Clarkson, on this thread (http://www.serviceacademyforums.com/showthread.php?p=167749#post167749), you made the following statement that relates to this thread about the January AROTC board:

Not every cadet in ROTC has a scholarship, in fact soon, not many cadets will have scholarships...Take ROTC while you are in college, and complete all the requirements and you'll be an Officer. You've done a lot of research on the web and you haven't come across all the different options? Perhaps I should shamelessly refer you to my blog.

http://goldenknightbattalion.wordpress.com/2010/03/10/whats-the-commitment/

I'm selling Army, so maybe you've just been looking at USMC websites.

Hope that helps.

dunninla raised a good question in response to that statement:

clarkson -- "soon, not many will have scholarships".

I'm trying to understand that in context. As I understand it, most ROTC cadets at this time do not have scholarships. So, is there a change?

My understanding of the CC memo from a couple of days ago is that the scholarships that will diminish going forward are those to Private Colleges and Universities that are not "tier 1". Now, I'm not sure who is defining Tier 1. Some would define that as UNSWR Unis Top 50 + LAC Top 25, others as Unis Top 100 + LACs Top 50, others still by the strict USNWR classification (this year) of Tier 1 being the top 196 National Unis and 186 LACs (Liberal Arts Colleges). I doubt very much that CC intends for the Top 196 to mean Tier 1, but we'll have to wait for them to clarify that. Then, what do you do with USNWR "Regional University" rankings, e.g. Villanova #1 in the North? Or Marist which is #10 in the North?

I would very much, as would I'm sure a whole tankload of PMSs, like to know exactly what CC means by "Tier 1" private schools. Clarkson is currently ranked #124 by USNWR... is that Tier 1? One thing Clarkson has going for it is that its rack rate tuition is about 15% below some other Private Unis... is that a good deal for CC? I think probably so.

I understand and agree that it may not be the best use of CC budget to give $43,000 per year tuition scholarships to Private schools that are not highly regarded academically.

Do you expect that we will know the answer on Friday (or whenever the awards start flowing)? And if there are only a few awards from the January board, will the others be bumped to the March board?

February 24th

Good morning.

Will look forward to Clarkson's remarks on your questions. He has become our favorite lately. I know when I see he's on the forum my heart gets a little jump wondering, is he posting results are in.....But PLEASE don't take that as a don't come around unless you've got results to tell about type comment. Far from it.

Take care.

k2rider - No, it is not UP but in a nearby state .

I just checked the status page and DD status has changed to check the DoDMERB Website. Of course it is not up and not sure if that means anything anyway!!

Still hoping for some good news soon. DD still plans to attend her 1st choice either way, but this would sure make it easier!!

From other posts that I have read, this status change is supposed to be VERY good news!

My DS's status has not changed.

However he's already been through the DodMERB process because he applied to USMA. I'm very thankful that he is through that process as it took over a YEAR because he was DQed on several issues. The last we heard he was cleared (waived) on all counts.

Between myself and friends, we have a lot of the State schools covered and one private school where I live with kids on the ROTC scholarship.

After talking to the moms (& one dad!) and discussing what I keep reading on here, we all asked questions of our kid's Battalions to see the thoughts of what the Budget may do to the current Cadets and the payment of this semester. Last semesters Room & Board payments came after the semester was over, so we just wondered if things would get held up this semester. Happy to report, my son got his yesterday, early! He's the first of my group of friend's kids this time around to get his money and they did say it was a bit early. I wonder if they worked to get it out prior to the possible Gov. shutdown.

As a side note, I will say that Cadet Command gets all the paperwork from the current contracted Cadets and has to work on taking care of their scholarships being paid. They are just not working on the current grouping of applicants.

I thought I would share a bit of what we were all told for what it's worth to you all.

They don't believe that the budget situation would change anything for the current contracted Cadets. That's what we all got in one way or another, they don't believe or don't think.
They also said that scholarships are getting tighter and quite a bit tighter. Just like Clarkson said, things were going to be different. The applicant pool and large numbers that put the state schools on their top list was very large again. The caliber of applicants for the most part is astounding. Seeing kids with very high GPA's, test scores, sports, JROTC, Scouting, Community Service, etc has become the norm, not the exception.
I will say again, I'm very pleased to see that we have such a large amount of the next generation that is bright, hardworking, dedicated and willing to serve to protect my freedom and way of life.

They also said that the current contracted Cadets need to make sure that remain full time as a student, they maintain their GPA, maintain their ROTC GPA above a 3.0, and stay on track passing their AFPT. Without that, they would lose their scholarships for a semester or two until they correct it, things may be difficult if this happens and that you don't get the money back.

My son is doing very well with all of these things, but I like my friends, all had a discussion with our kids to remind them of the importance of all of this. I just emailed my son and told him of the stories that I'm reading here and the stress you are all under and once again reminded him how fortunate he his that his hard work paid off for him last year so he got his dream of having the scholarship and is using it at his the college he wanted to go to.

I will keep my fingers crossed for you all as you keep checking this site and the ROTC scholarship website constantly. (I can remember walking around Disney World last year glued to my iphone and constantly checking, it was crazy.) Good luck to you all and I truly hope that all of your children who have worked so hard and are so deserving get rewarded for their accomplishments and get to fulfill their dreams of not only attending the colleges they wish to attend but their dreams of becoming an officer in whatever branch of ROTC they wish.
Keep the Faith!

That's been great news in year's past! Yes!!!! Congrats!!

You won't see any change on the DoDMERB status yet anyway, so don't sweat that it's down. There is a lag between being awarded the scholarship and anything showing up there.

After seeing this status change on the ROTC scholarship status, the next change will be to say "You've been either awarded or offered the scholarship to" and list 1 or more schools.

It can take days for them to input the changes into the system, just keep checking. My son's changed on a Saturday morning of all days.

Thank you, cjs. That was a very uplifting post. Your contribution and inquiries on our behalf is very much appreciated!!

Yes, it's only the beginning and hopefully others will have good news as well.

Just checked again and his status changed to "You may check your medical qualification status by visiting the Department of Defense Medical Examination Review Board DoDMERB WebSite"

Can I get excited now? I really don't want to get my hopes up.

To paraphrase Clarkson, "it's a good sign, but until you are holding that piece of paper, it's not for sure."

CJS - Do you remember the timeline on that change? And what kind of wait should we expect before we would see a physical letter - if that is what is what this means is going to happen.

I would like to say that the changes occurred starting on a Friday and then some on Saturday. It was maybe that Wednesday that we all noticed the school list. It was maybe a week later that we received the letter.
Unless you can get some information out of on of your child's schools, you won't know if it's for a year year or 3 year and to what school or schools.

I'll pull out the records and see if I can give you the exact time line.
