Leaders Encouraging Airmen Development

mail from Admissions

I am thinking some of the mail that they wanted to get out on Friday might not have actually been posted until yesterday.

So when do you think it will arrive? & what makes you think that? (a lot of questions but it's only because I see you as a great source of intel)

Frankly, I expected you all to post today. Mail from CO should only take three days to get anywhere in CONUS, so if posted Friday, delivery Tues. I am just guessing that if they had several hundred to process on Friday, and knowing they are short handed , thyy might not have gotten them all out. Keep in mind the USPS sometimes takes five days to deliver, so it may be Thursday.

Yeah, hopefully so. Does anybody know what the acceptance rate Cadet Candidates to the Academy is? What are the chances of not receiving an appointment? Has anybody heard of any cases where this happened?

I have heard the acceptance rate is in the high 90's. This is your golden ticket. The appointment is yours to lose. That said, this year they started with 240, as always. As of March, there were less than 200. I think they will graduate about 185 and most of the graduates will succeed in getting appointed.

Hmmm, fair enough. I was just wondering. I was talking to a Pilot in my squadron who went to the P and went on to graduate in the class of '08 I believe...well anyway he was prior-enlisted and said that it's "pretty much" guaranteed that when you finish at the P, you'll get a slot up the hill...unless you're a complete idiot. I don't really know the definition of a complete idiot, but yeah.........

I think the acceptance rate for priors is very high. Some of the high schoolers DOR during BMT, others just can't handle the military discipline and DOR later. Others just screw up, breaking rules or not studying.
Do your best, do what they tell you to do and you'll be fine. They have extra instruction for those who struggle with the classes. if you need help, use it. They really want you to succeed.

I wonder what the statistics for these candidates dropping out are. I can see some leaving BCT and few committing honor code violations, but I'd guess the majority drop out because they couldn't adjust to the military lifestyle, or had issues with academics.

Based on your edit, 2bornot2b it appears you hold the same basic view I have on why some drop out.

I was told the same thing about the prior-enlisted acceptance rates, but I'm just trying to figure out why people DOR. Like why did the number drop from 240ish to 200ish. That's a pretty big decline in my opinion...

I agree, those numbers are big. My guess is they're mostly civilians who couldn't adjust to the military life.

Anywhere your military career will take you, there will be non-hackers. There will be kids in Basic who you see the first few days then 5 weeks will pass and you'll wonder what happened to them.

What I DID hear is that they expect A LOT from the priors... Obviously, because we've "been there and done that" but I wonder what their expectations will be!

Ah, I see. I guess you'll be finding out soon enough.

Late to the party

Ran into this forum a few times (thanks google) and finally decided to register and say hey. I'm an A1C out of Dover. Applied for LEAD, got a prep school invite, and will be mailing a response soon! Of course it's going to say that I accept. I saw my acceptance via portal (April 19 like a lot of you I read) but am deployed ATM so my snail mail is seriously the snail mail. Not sure what else to say right now, so look forward to shooting the breeze with y'all.

Welcome to the thread! Congrats on your appointment too...

I'm currently at the prep school. A squad holds the record for highest drop out rate of all three. I lost count, but they've definitely had around 20 people, maybe more, who left.

We also have plenty more who aren't planning on taking their appointment even if they get it. I know at least 5 people who aren't going but at least want to graduate here. Anyone on a waiting list can relax. There's going to be some slots appearing at the last minute, I guarantee you.

Most people left because they don't want to deal with the crap for the next 4 years. A few have been booted for conduct and grades, but the majority of them didn't want to continue on.

There's still plenty of people here who shouldn't even be considered for an appointment but who knows how that will play out. I know of one person with two honor violations, one with three and many people with awful GPAs. They're being really generous with keeping people around but I have no idea why when we all know they're debating so hard over who to give an appointment.

Thanks for the info

Thanks for the info colinbluemoon. My DS is on the waiting list. I don't think he will relax until he has a BFE in hand, but it's good to know that some of the prepsters are not going to go to USAFA so there may be more slots for the wait list candidates.

"deal with the crap"

This makes me very sad. Every year dozens, if not hundreds, of candidates wait anxiously for months on end, hoping beyond hope that they will be notified of an appointment, and only a select few are chosen.

Then they get to the P and suddenly decide that they don't want to "deal with the crap"????

I wish they would do more research before wasting these precious opportunities. I realize that this is much easier said than done. I think that anyone who has the proper motivation can get through anything if they want their goals badly enough. Obviously, many of these Cadet Candidates find themselves shocked by the challenges and decide that the cost of "dealing with the crap" is not worth the eventual benefit of becoming an Air Force Officer and serving their country. I understand that the military is not for everyone. I suppose it is better to weed them out now than have them become disgruntled officers, serving poorly due to their attitude.

Congratulations!!! My DS will be a classmate of yours.
