Letters Of Assurance

Definitely I love it

What're you taking?
I'm doing HL: Maths, English A1 and European History
SL: German A2 (just switched from HL), Chem and Spanish B (one year course --> 7 :yay:!!!)

If I may ask, what do your current grades add up to? Mine aren't sooo rosy

Last year I took English HL 1, Spanish IV, World History SL, AP Stats, Physics HL 1, and IB/AP Calculus SL.

This year I am taking Psyc SL, Spanish HL, TOK, Physics HL, English HL, and Calculus 2 & 3 at a community college.

The only two exams I have taken were Math SL and World History SL, and I received a 5 and 6 on them respectively.

anybody have both?

I know of a lot of people who have a nomination, and a lot of people with a letter of assurance, but does anybody have both? I do and its a GREAT feeling to be finally done with that long application process, but so far there is only one other person on here with both the Loa and Nom...

Ah, AFswmr2013, another IB prospect. Join the club. :thumb:

How's your nominating process coming along? Final turn before the long stretch to the finish line, eh?

He-he-he.

13ryan13: the only way to get an appointment this early is to obtain a LOA and a presidential nomination. Since most MOC nominations aren't announced untill December, and they are the vast majority, we have to wait.

Hope this clears things up a bit.

Yeah, I hope so. I could really use a nomination if it happens to come my way. haha. but you're IB too?

I did not know that. thanks for telling me... but i should know by Christmas or something sooner than March right?

Yeah, I'm in IB . Hoping for a nice diploma and a countless number of sleepless nights to remember.

Virtually all nominations are given out before Christmas, hence that's where a big chunk of appointments will be sent out. Remember--no nomination, no appointment. USNA waits for applicants to receive their nominations b/c it makes their job much easier; only about 1/3 of all applicants get nominated. Nevertheless, if your application is outstanding (LOA would be a good indicator), and you didn't get a nomination for some wild reason, you would be considered for a VP or even a USNA superintendent's nomination.

How do I know all this? Probably because I was paranoid and sent e-mails to my BGO every other day with the same questions you are asking. lol. Knowledge is indeed confidence. Glad to help anytime.

Ryan; what are you trying to "Know by Christmas"? IF, you received an LOA; then that meant that you had EVERYTHING required of the application; with the exception of a nomination and possibly your DODMERB; and that you were totally ACCEPTABLE to the academy. So much so that they "ASSURED" you; hence the meaning of LOA (Letter of ASSURANCE); that if you receive a NOMINATION and/or DODMERB if still needed; that you WILL RECEIVE an appointment.

So, IF you have an LOA. AND, you received a nomination. AND you passed your DODMERB; than you are ASSURED that you WILL receive an appointment. You never would have received an LOA if there was any possible doubt. Only NOT getting the nomination or having a medical issue unwaiverable, could stop you from getting the appointment. (Of course, there have been those that slacked off the 2nd semester senior year and failed a class and LOST THEIR APPOINTMENT). As to WHEN you'll hear, it is possible to hear very soon. Can I assume that you received a presidential nomination? Most congressional nominations aren't submitted until after December. FWIW; my son received his presidential nomination about 1 July 2007. His application was completed 100% including medical, CFA, transcripts, letters, app, etc... a few weeks later. +/- July 15th. Then it was hurry up and wait. He never received an LOA. He received his actual appointment the 1st week of November. There are a number of others; now C3C (Sophomores) and C4C (Freshmen) with the same situation. So, if you received the LOA, and received a presidential nomination. And passed the DODMERB. Then you could find out at any time. If you got your nomination through your congress/senator, then they may not actually SUBMIT their list until it is complete. Which means until their interview and evaluation period for all applicants. That could mean finding out about the actual appointment as late as January. Best of luck to you. later... mike....

Christcorp, I think Ryan was talking about nominations, not appointments.

I have my ENTIRE application done (DODMERB, CFA, everything), and I got the LOA, but my nomination came from a State Representative, not the President. That clears it up that I might not hear about an Appointment until Souder sends in his list; from my ALO's description, only 4 people applied to him for USAFA, and we were all shoe-ins because he had enough slots anyway (I already got my letter from Souder, idk about any of the other applicants). I am too excited to be patient and wait for the Appointment to come. My LOA ruined my mind-set that I would have to wait until March/April to find anything out. But thanks for clearing that up for me.

Oh, ha-ha. Congrats! I don't know why you are worrying then, everything will fall into place in time, so just kick back and enjoy the rest of the year.

Thanks man, good luck to you too (I assume you are going for AFA?) I just hate waiting for big major life changing events like this... not that I've had many

Nah, I am only applying to USNA, but I think that we are still all in the same boat. Or shall I say an airplane?

And don't tell me you can't sleep well beacuse the mailman might've accidentally misplaced your FedEx envelope. Going to spoil it for others, ha-ha. Stay safe and good luck to you at USAFA!

I know of people who had nominations and LOA's and DODMERB done before Jan. and they never recieved their appointments until March. You never know when it'll come. I actually recieved my appointment in the mail before I had recieved my nomination by mail. talk about a big surprise!

Do all of the appointments arrive in March for those who don't receive early LOAs? Or do they come periodically throughout the winter?

They pretty much come whenever they come. The SA has tons to do with them even after the noms come in. Depending on the type of slate, if there is no principal nom, they SA has to wait until all other candidates complete there application to make a determination of who gets the nom. That is why so many come later - the SA is waiting until either a) all candidates files are complete from your district or b) the application deadline has passed so incomplete files are out of the running.

I have my interview with Senator Stabenow tomorrow morning. It's only scheduled for 15 minutes. So, what kind of questions do you think they will ask? Can they really evaluate a candidate in 15 min? Also, I just received an LOA to the USAFA this week. Should I bring a copy to the interview, or will they already know I have one? And does having one have any kind of weight on congressional noms?

Thanks!

Here's a post from an ALO a while back that i think sums up what you're asking for.

Hello all!

I sit on these boards almost every year. So...some intel...

I want to know who the candidate is. I try to put them at ease (they're usually very nervous, scared, etc.) Then I/we get to the "meat" of the interview.

Example questions I've used:

a. Why did you apply?
b. Have you been to the academy/met a cadet/mid'n?
c. WHY do I want you as a junior officer? (I'm a senior officer)
d. What do you bring to the table? We, the armed forces, need the best: why is that you?
e. There are "X" number of amazing young men and women out in the lobby waiting to meet with us. Why are you better than them?
f. What is the honor code? Since students in HS do NOT "rat" on their friends, why should I believe you would turn in a classmate/roommate if they violated the code? Or yourself?

The "politics" questions were very well explained by previous posters. I have never had a board member ask one in my 13 years as an ALO; we don't care about politics for candidates: we want the BEST candidate and ultimately the best young man/woman that will serve our nation.

On the boards I've been a member of...it's that "simple."

Steve
